Marianismo And The Catholic Autobiographer: A Comparative Analysis, Nina Lee Jun 2022

Marianismo And The Catholic Autobiographer: A Comparative Analysis, Nina Lee

Theses and Dissertations

As a version of femininity that derives from the figure of the Mother Mary, marianismo emphasizes the traditional roles of self-sacrifice, motherhood, spirituality, and nurturance. While marianismo is most often associated with Latin America, it can be traced back to Catholicism’s origins in Europe. Early and medieval Catholic theologians, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Peter Abelard, demonstrate marianista beliefs within their autobiographical writings. As autobiography is purported to be the most intimate window into both the personal and larger social situations of a given time and place, the autobiographies of such Catholic male theologians provide insight into the …

Lived Experience In Catholic Education: Research And Reflections From Sub-Saharan Africa And North America, Quentin Wodon

Journal of Global Catholicism

Global enrollment in Catholic schools more than doubled between since the 1970s with most of this growth observed in sub-Saharan Africa. This issue of the Journal of Global Catholicism is dedicated to lived experiences in Catholic schools. With articles reflecting on experiences from Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Nigeria, the emphasis is on sub-Saharan Africa as the region with the fastest growing enrollment in Catholic schools. In societies with rising religious pluralism, this article maintains that ensuring mutual respect and harmony among students from different faiths who study in Catholic schools is more important now than it was in the past.

Chapter 22: Deontology, Bharat Ranganathan Jun 2022

Chapter 22: Deontology, Bharat Ranganathan

Religion Faculty Publications

In contemporary normative ethics, deontology (deon = duty, logos = science, study of) is a theory according to which agents deliberate about how they ought to act and evaluate whether their actions are right or wrong. On a rough characterization, deontology prioritizes the right over the good. Therefore, deontological normative theories require, forbid, or permit actions as a matter of principle, conforming to particular moral norms, largely regardless of the outcomes produced by those actions. In prioritizing the right over the good, deontological normative theories incorporate agent‐centered restrictions and respect for individual persons. Because “standard deontological views maintain that it …

Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather Jun 2022

Puritan Patriarchal Construction Of American Sexual Morality And Woman's Worth: A Daughter's Response, Savannah Mather

Honors Projects

While modern conceptions of Puritanism regard it as an artifact of American history, whose woman-killing theologies are long buried and forgotten, the bible in my father’s closet and the recently leaked Supreme Court draft to overturn Roe. Vs. Wade would argue otherwise. Cotton Mather’s favorite book Ornaments for the Daughters of Zion outlined both the ideals and detriments of the Anglo-American female identity. In this text, white women were taught to absolve themselves of the “nakedness” in dress Puritan settlers associated Indigenous people with. A woman’s ability to align herself to the ideals of chastity determined her own and her …

The Vestal Virgins And The Transition From Republic To Principate Under Augustus C. 30 Bce - 14 Ce, Jamie R. Ditzel Jun 2022

The Vestal Virgins And The Transition From Republic To Principate Under Augustus C. 30 Bce - 14 Ce, Jamie R. Ditzel

University Honors Theses

For centuries, ancient historians have been intrigued by the Vestal Virgins, a priestess order older than Rome itself that was dedicated to Vesta, Roman goddess of the hearth. From our ancient sources we can glean that the cult, though shrouded in mystery, was regarded as playing an invaluable role in the prosperity of Rome and notions of what it meant to be Roman. Scholars such as Mary Beard and Ariadne Staples have been pioneers in studies of the Vestals, proposing the widely accepted theories that the Vestals served as physical embodiments of republican values, Roman people, and the city of …

Q&A: Christian, Committed, And Called: An Interview, Linda Gray

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

After teaching in a Christian University for more than 40 years, three professors who are retiring and have received emeritus status reflect on how students have changed over the decades and how they—as professors—have had to adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing student body. The three professors were asked four questions: (1) how have students changed during the last four decades, (2) how have the professors adapted to meet the changing needs of students, (3) what was one unexpected thing each professor learned once they started teaching, (4) what advice do the professors have for those still teaching …

Transitions In Collegiate Church Music Pedagogy: Developing A Pedagogy For Undergraduate Modern Worship Curriculum, Christopher Andrew Brown Jun 2022

Transitions In Collegiate Church Music Pedagogy: Developing A Pedagogy For Undergraduate Modern Worship Curriculum, Christopher Andrew Brown

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Church music pedagogy has a rich history dating back to the 9th century and is rooted in scripture and ancient traditions. Changes over the centuries have been gradual with incremental transitions; however, since the introduction of pop and rock musical stylings to church settings almost sixty years ago, changes have been swift and dramatic. The advent of modern worship has left Christian higher learning institutions scrambling to find a place where the curriculum would be useful and relevant to the modern 21st century Church. This paper seeks to examine the historical background of Christian church music pedagogy while …

Developing Critical Consciousness In Students For Cultural Transformation, Carolyn F. Stubbs, Hallett Hullinger Jun 2022

Developing Critical Consciousness In Students For Cultural Transformation, Carolyn F. Stubbs, Hallett Hullinger

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

In this paper, we address the need for developing critical consciousness in students in institutions of learning. Grounded in Freire’s thoughts on critical pedagogy and drawing from studies and research on critical consciousness, we contend that developing students who transform culture must involve raising their level of critical awareness and increasing social engagement and critical action. This paper examines the literature on critical consciousness development and draws attention to factors that are necessary for developing critical consciousness in students. Special attention is given to creating a curriculum and school culture that result in students who are critically aware and engaged …
