Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.

Abuse of any kind as well as significant losses such as death of a loved one can result in a broken spirit (Proverbs 15:13, 17:22). However, we have a wonderful God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Isaiah 51:3). He often leads us into communities where we can experience being seen, soothed, safe, and secure. This chapter describes the experience of brokenness and the process of healing integrating both biblical and interpersonal neurobiological perspectives.

This project reimagines a first-century reception of the Gospel of Mark within a historically reconstructed (yet hypothetical) performance event. In particular, it considers the disciples' character and characterization through the lens of performance criticism. Questions concerning the characterization of the disciples have been relatively one-sided in New Testament scholarship, in favor of their negative characterization. This project demonstrates why such assumptions need not be necessary when we (re-)consider the oral/aural milieu in which the Gospel of Mark was first composed and received by its earliest audiences. If colonialism is a structure, not an event, then special attention must be paid to the pastas well as the legacies of colonial domination that continue into the present. While Pope Francis has recently called for “overcoming colonizing mentalities” through the lens of what he calls “integral ecology,” crucial aspects of the colonial paradigm remain neglected or underexamined in this approach: sexuality, gender, and the negotiation of religious difference. The fragments of Artapanus have proven to be enigmatic for most scholars over the years and as such have not been treated in significant detail. Most scholarship has been restricted to two separate lines of enquiry: genre and ethnicity. I suggest that the resonance between Greek colonial poetics sheds new light on Artapanus's literary agenda: namely, that Artapanus is constructing and representing the memory of Jewish cultural and political foundations using broader Greek poetics which were used to describe the civic, cultic and geographic foundation of a colony. This article reviews the various studies that have looked at the reception of evolution in multiple contexts to highlight the pedagogical challenges that materialise for Muslim students and teachers. Empowered Presence: Theorizing An Afrocentric Performance Of Leadership By African American Women, Sharon Wamble-King

There is a paucity of theorizing concerning leadership enactments performed by African American women. The performances have been marginalized and obscured within the Western leadership canon as they fall outside its epistemological boundaries; they have also been sidelined within Critical Leadership Studies. This study employed Afrocentricity as a decolonizing paradigm and Africology as the research methodology to describe and define a leadership phenomenon enacted by African American women. Setting aside Western conceptions of leadership, focus groups of African American women examined video excerpts of Africana women’s oral performances through an Africological lens. วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีในคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์และคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระเพื่อเปรียบเทียบสารัตถะพัฒนาการและความสัมพันธ์ของทั้งสองคัมภีร์ โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 6 ประเด็น ได้แก่ (1) สงคราม (2) ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการพิจารณายาตราทัพ (3) การสร้างค่ายหอรบ (4) การจัดกระบวนทัพ (5) การตอบโต้ และ (6) การต่อสู้ด้วยกลลวงผลการศึกษาพบว่า คัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์เป็นการรวบรวมองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ยุคก่อน และนำเสนอในมุมมองของตนเอง ส่วนคัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระได้นำเสนอองค์ความรู้อ้างอิงคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ เป็นการสืบทอดองค์ความรู้อย่างต่อเนื่องหลายศตวรรษ นอกจากนี้ประเด็นสำคัญที่ผู้วิจัยค้นพบคือ คัมภีร์กามันทกียนีติสาระมิใช่เป็นการนำคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์มาแต่งเป็นร้อยกรองเท่านั้น แต่เป็นการประมวลองค์ความรู้ทางนีติศาสตร์จากคณาจารย์ในยุคก่อนเช่นเดียวกับคัมภีร์อรรถศาสตร์ โดยมีเกาฏิลยะเป็นหนึ่งในคณาจารย์นั้น และได้มีการพัฒนาสร้างสรรค์องค์ความรู้จนเป็นแบบฉบับที่มีเอกลักษณ์เป็นของตนเองเรื่องสงครามและยุทธวิธีเป็นหนึ่งในวิธีการแสวงหาความรุ่งเรืองให้แก่อาณาจักร พระราชาที่เป็นผู้นำทัพจะต้องมีความสามารถในการวางแผน เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมรับมือกับสถาณการณ์ต่าง ๆ ได้เป็นอย่างดี ทั้งยังต้องเชี่ยวชาญการเดินทัพเพื่อโจมตีศัตรู และการใช้กลอุบายต่าง ๆ เพื่อแสวงหาความได้เปรียบ แม้อุบายนั้นจะผิดศีลธรรม ดังนั้นจึงแสดงให้เห็นว่าองค์ความรู้จากทั้งสองคัมภีร์สอนในเชิงปฏิบัติมากกว่าอุดมคติ โดยมองว่าทุกวิธีการที่ทำให้เกิดความได้เปรียบเป็นสิ่งชอบธรรม

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ศึกษาพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ ในสมัยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส ทรงเป็นบรรณาธิการ พ.ศ. 2437-2454 โดยศึกษาความเป็นมา สารัตถะ และบทบาทความสำคัญต่อพระพุทธศาสนาและสังคมไทย ผลการศึกษาความเป็นมาพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ (พ.ศ. 2437-2454) เป็นนิตยสารทางพระพุทธศาสนาเล่มแรกของประเทศไทย ตีพิมพ์เป็นรายเดือน เผยแผ่ครั้งแรกเมื่อเดือนตุลาคม ปีพุทธศักราช 2437 ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยสมเด็จพระมหาสมณเจ้า กรมพระยาวชิรญาณวโรรส (กรมหมื่นวชิรญาณวโรรส) ทรงเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งและบรรณาธิการรูปแรก มีพระเถรานุเถระ พระภิกษุสามเณรนิสิตของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย และกลุ่มบุคคลต่าง ๆ ร่วมจัดทำ เพื่อใช้เป็นสื่อในการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมที่เข้ากับสมัยนิยม ตามวัตถุประสงค์สำหรับเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมของมหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย ผลการศึกษาด้านสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า เนื้อหาสารัตถะพุทธธรรมในนิตยสารธรรมจักษุ จำแนกออกเป็น 10 ประเภท ได้แก่ สารัตถะพุทธธรรมเกี่ยวกับ 1) คัมภีร์พระไตรปิฎก 2) สุภาษิตและนิทานชาดก 3) พระธรรมเทศนา 4) คำอนุโมทนา 5) หัวข้อกระทู้ธรรม 6) ตำนานและประวัติศาสตร์ 7) คัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนา 8) หลักธรรมสำคัญและหลักการปฏิบัติธรรม 9) พระคุณสมบัติของพระพุทธเจ้า และ 10) พระสูตรทางพระพุทธศาสนามหายาน สะท้อนให้เห็นมิติใหม่ของการเผยแผ่พุทธธรรมไปสู่สาธารณชน ด้วยการนำเสนอเนื้อหาสาระที่หลากหลาย เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าถึงวรรณกรรมทางพระพุทธศาสนามากยิ่งขึ้น ผลการศึกษาด้านกลวิธีนำเสนอสารัตถะพุทธธรรมพบว่า มี 5 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การใช้ภาษาแนวใหม่ 2) การจัดหมวดหมู่สารัตถะพุทธธรรม 3) การแปลความพระสูตรรูปแบบใหม่ 4) การนำเสนอพุทธสุภาษิตสั้น ๆ 5) การใช้โวหารวิธี คือ บรรยายโวหารวิธี พรรณนาโวหารวิธี ปุจฉาวิสัชนาวิธี สาธกโวหารวิธี และเทศนาโวหารวิธี เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการอ่านและศึกษาคำสอนทางพระพุทธศาสนา ผ่านมิติมุมมองด้านประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิศาสตร์ และภาษาวรรณกรรม โดยประยุกต์หลักธรรมให้เหมาะสมแก่กาลและบริบทสังคม ผลการศึกษาด้านบทบาทและความสำคัญของนิตยสารธรรมจักษุต่อพุทธศาสนาในสังคมไทยพบว่า นิตยสารธรรมจักษุ เป็นเสมือนโรงธรรมสภาของพุทธศาสนิกชน สร้างพฤติกรรมการรับรู้พุทธธรรมใหม่ ๆ คือปรับเปลี่ยนรูปแบบการเข้าถึงหลักพุทธธรรมจากการฟังสู่การอ่าน เป็นสื่อของคณะสงฆ์ส่วนกลางในการจัดการเล่าเรียนหัวเมือง และเป็นสื่อกลางระหว่างพระพุทธศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ ชาติบ้านเมือง และประชาชน ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการเผยแผ่คำสอนของพระพุทธศาสนาและพัฒนาการศึกษาของบ้านเมืองอีกช่องทางหนึ่ง …

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์การอธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ และหัวข้อธรรมที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ ได้แก่ การเวียนว่ายตายเกิดและภพชาติ อมนุษย์ และปาฏิหาริย์ โดยเป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงเอกสารจากธรรมบรรยายและหนังสือของสมเด็จพระพุทธโฆษาจารย์ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า เรื่องนรกและสวรรค์เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่อาจกล่าวถึงในแง่ของการมีหรือไม่มีโดยอ้างคัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนาโดยตรงได้ แต่ควรมีข้อพิจารณาและท่าทีการปฏิบัติต่อเรื่องนี้เข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องด้วย ท่านได้อธิบายเรื่องนรกและสวรรค์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ระดับ กล่าวคือ ระดับที่ 1 เป็นการกล่าวถึงนรกและสวรรค์โดยอ้างอิงพระไตรปิฎก ที่มีลักษณะเป็นภพภูมิที่รองรับผลของกรรมชั่วและกรรมดีหลังความตาย ระดับที่ 2 นรกและสวรรค์ซึ่งเป็นคุณภาพของจิตหรือภูมิจิตที่สืบเนื่องไปจากคุณภาพจิตในปัจจุบัน ระดับที่ 3 นรกและสวรรค์ที่เป็นการรับรู้อารมณ์ที่น่าพอใจและไม่น่าพอใจจากการรับอารมณ์ผ่านอายตนะทั้ง 6 ท่านพยายามเน้นการอธิบายนรกและสวรรค์ในระดับที่ 2 และ 3 โดยแสดงให้เห็นว่า มนุษย์ซึ่งอาจมีสภาพจิตที่หยาบหรือประณีตสามารถที่จะเข้าถึงหรือรับรู้อารมณ์ความสุขหรือความทุกข์ของภพภูมิที่มองไม่เห็นนั้นได้ เมื่อรับรู้แล้วก็ควรตระหนักถึงบทบาทของมนุษย์เองในการเป็นผู้สร้างเหตุให้เกิดผลดีหรือชั่วนั้น ส่วนการอธิบายในประเด็นอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง พบว่า มีแนวทางเดียวกัน คือการสอนจะต้องนำไปสู่ความเข้าใจหรือท่าทีที่เหมาะสม ซึ่งตอกย้ำหลักการในพระพุทธศาสนา ได้แก่ การพึ่งตนเองและความไม่ประมาทในชีวิต จนถึงการแก้ปัญหาความงมงายในสังคม ในการอธิบาย ท่านได้โยงกลับมาที่ตัวมนุษย์ซึ่งสามารถรับรู้สาระสำคัญของสิ่งที่อยู่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสนั้นด้วยตนเอง เช่น ความรู้สึกทุกข์หรือสุขที่สร้างได้ด้วยตนเอง ความไม่แน่นอนของชีวิต คุณภาพที่แตกต่างกันของมนุษย์ในสังคม ความน่าอัศจรรย์ที่บุคคลสร้างขึ้น นับว่าเป็นการสื่อสารธรรมที่เหนือประสาทสัมผัสได้โดยที่ไม่กระทบความหมายดั้งเดิมของธรรมนั้น

McIntyre has argued for a reappraisal of the typology of the Old Testament Well scenes contrary to popular interpretations espoused by Alter and Sailhamer.[1] This reappraisal has implication for John 4:1-45 with the meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. He believed that religious piety is to be found in the “feeling of absolute dependence”, and all subsequent doctrines must be discovered through reflection upon religious experience.
