[...]the work provides detailed information about missionary strategies, as a letter of 1665 from a Persian Carmelite to the general of the order in Rome makes clear: "To confound Persian temerity accomplished persons are needed, for these people are very studious-they have infinite esteem for a Religious who can stand up to them (in argument)" (1:448).

Rediscovering Sabbath: Hebrew Social Thought And Its Contribution To Black Theology's Vision For America, Christopher Taylor Spotts Sep 2013

Rediscovering Sabbath: Hebrew Social Thought And Its Contribution To Black Theology's Vision For America, Christopher Taylor Spotts

Dissertations (1934 -)

Black Theology has made extensive use of the Exodus narrative for making its theological and ethical claims. It has served to demonstrate God's concerns for liberation both within history and eschatologically. However, the Sabbath and Jubilee laws of the Hebrew Scriptures have been underutilized as sources of social ethical critique. Sabbath and Jubilee together were a unique way of life and an implicit social ethical system established by Israel in response to their slavery and oppression in Egypt. It is Sabbath and Jubilee that reveal Israel's response to God's liberative act, and demonstrates the way in which they understand what …

Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse Sep 2013

Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Over the last three years, three new important books have contributed to critical geographies of American evangelicalism: Jason Dittmer and Tristan Sturm’s Mapping the End Times, Jason Hackworth’s Faith Based, and Justin G. Wilford’s Sacred Subdivisions. Demonstrating that evangelicals are ignored at geographers’ peril in political, economic, and cultural geography, these new books each demonstrate that evangelical usages of space have contemporary salience in secular geopolitical formations, domestic economic policy, and the interpretation of cultural landscapes. Because these three books represent three different subfields in human geography (political, economic, and cultural geography), they can be taken together to critically interrogate …

Biblical Leaders: Key Principles And Concepts In Overcoming And Managing Stress, Distress, And Anguish, James Taylor Sep 2013

Biblical Leaders: Key Principles And Concepts In Overcoming And Managing Stress, Distress, And Anguish, James Taylor

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The high turnover rate among clergy within the local church evidences the mismanagement of personal stress and distress associated with ministry. The purpose of this thesis project is to increase the effectiveness and longevity of ministers by offering them five principles for managing and overcoming their stress, distress, and anguish. If followed, these principles will successfully reduce the personal strain associated with ministry, thus encouraging clergy to remain where God has planted them to build long successful tenures. Based on surveys, personal perspectives, relevant literature, and biblical study, this project establishes essential principles and concepts for managing ministerial anguish, and …

Christian Magic: Bible-Based Heresy, Seth Kohrman Aug 2013

Christian Magic: Bible-Based Heresy, Seth Kohrman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Bible (the Old and the New Testaments) condemned magic. The Church Fathers followed the biblical example and also denounced magic. However, magic continued to exist among Christians and was even largely based upon biblical passages for its source of power; thus, magic survived partially on account of Christians and their ironic use of magic with help of the very scriptures that censured it. I will demonstrate first through specific examples that the Old and New Testaments as well as the Church Fathers reviled magic; however, the authors of each of these writings had their own agendas for speaking out …

My experience with the ORCA mentoring program has been a useful look into scholarship as well as a valuable experience which will aid me in future educational and academic endeavors. Our main project objectives were met with a few adjustments, and I was able to gain the experience of working with a supportive and experienced professor. My growth in the mentoring program can be summarized in three areas: the overall experience of working on an academic paper start to finish, gaining an understanding of the importance scheduling and time management, and the findings of the paper itself.

I had an incredible ORCA mentoring experience with Dr. Donald Parry. Our research project was focused on the textual variations in the Dead Sea Scrolls that cause theological differences. Our main premise was to compare the Dead Sea Scrolls Hebrew Biblical texts with the traditional Masoretic Biblical Texts.

Byu Office Of Research And Creative Activities, Benjamin Park

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The reception of a BYU ORCA Mentoring Grant, and the research and writing it enabled me to perform, was one of the best experiences during my time at BYU. I researched the intellectual environment of early Mormon rhetoric, focusing specifically on how it balanced the tensions of Enlightenment thought on the one hand and Romantic intimations on the other. The grant provided me with the opportunity to not only delve into secondary literature, but also a vast amount of primary sources. The benefit of this project not only resulted in several individual papers, but also helped prepare me for more …

Hell, Meghan Henning, Carol A. Newsom Aug 2013

Hell, Meghan Henning, Carol A. Newsom

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The mention of hell usually invokes imagery of a fiery place, below the earth, in which the wicked are tortured for eternity. Although this dominant model of hell owes much to the history of interpretation of Jewish and Christian scriptures, the reader of the Bible is hard-pressed to locate this specific depiction of hell in the Bible itself. There are a number of reasons for this apparent paucity of references to hell in the Bible. To begin, the concepts of the abode of the dead in ancient Judaism (e.g., Sheol, the Pit, Abaddon) did not refer to a lively afterlife …

The Role Of Relationships In The Conversion Process: An Lds Sample, James W. Phillips, Dr. Kristin Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I consider this ORCA project to be a successful one on all accounts. The goals that were originally outlined at the onset of this project (forming an original research paper and presenting at a major academic conference) were met and future collaborations with Dr. Kristin Hansen suggest that we can publish our work in a scholarly journal. From the beginning, through the completion of the ORCA grant project, and continuing until the present, this mentored learning experience has been a fulfilling and productive endeavor.

An Index To The Genealogical Mission Journals Of William Francis Butt, Tiffanie L. Wride, Kip Sperry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

William Francis Butt served a Genealogical Mission to Great Britain from November 1894 to February of 1895. During these months he researched his ancestry among parishes of Wiltshire, England. In the Harold B. Lee Library Special Collections, there is a collection by William Francis Butt titled Papers, 1881-1940 (Special Collections call number MSS 1397). This collection includes several journals in which Butt kept his mission records while in England. My project was to index the names in these journals so that they would be accessible to family history researchers.

Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson Aug 2013

Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson

Publications and Research

In this report, the authors documents how persecution of and violence against the Rohingya in Burma has spread to other Muslim communities throughout the country. Physicians for Human Rights conducted eight separate investigations in Burma and the surrounding region between 2004 and 2013. PHR’s most recent field research in early 2013 indicates a need for renewed attention to violence against minorities and impunity for such crimes. The findings presented in this report are based on investigations conducted in Burma over two separate visits for a combined 21-day period between March and May 2013.

Artemus Millet: Architect To The Kingdom, Josh E. Probert, Dr. Larry C. Porter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Kirtland Temple has presided over the Kirtland Flats of Northern Ohio for 164 years as an architectural testimony of the faith and industry of the Kirtland Saints. Much has been said about the Temple and the events that transpired therein, yet there remained a paucity of information about its superintendent of construction – Artemus Millet. References to Millet are only passing ones in works related to the Kirtland period of Mormonism. To me, he deserved to be included among Truman Angell, William Folsom, and William Weeks as one of the great architects in LDS Church History. The goal of …

The Constitution Or The Bible? Navigating The Quagmire Of Christian Fundamentalism In 21st Century America, James Paul Smith Aug 2013

The Constitution Or The Bible? Navigating The Quagmire Of Christian Fundamentalism In 21st Century America, James Paul Smith

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is a rhetorical exploration of the historical and contemporary struggle in America regarding the relationship between government and religion in the public square. It begins in the nation's infancy with the first settlers, who, realizing that as Christians they were a religious majority, and no longer a persecuted minority. They then decided that being in control of religion and government was not such a bad thing after all. Ultimately, they reversed their thinking and became staunch advocates of a confluence between Christian religion and government. Other early patriots, who had witnessed the atrocities of such an entanglement on …
