“And Know The Place For The First Time” The 1851 Ecclesiastical Census Of England And Wales And Early Lds Branch, Evva Courtney Benson, Dr. Cynthia L. Doxey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The year 1851 was a unique one in England. Not only was it the year of the decennial census, but it was the only time a national census on religion was taken. 1851 was also a year when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had many branches throughout England. The Church had been in England since 1837, but the large decline in membership due to emigration had not yet occurred.

The Huguenot Immigrants To The American Colonies: A Database Of French Protestant Records, Michael Call, Jacob Ekins, Byron Merrill Aug 2013

The Huguenot Immigrants To The American Colonies: A Database Of French Protestant Records, Michael Call, Jacob Ekins, Byron Merrill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

French Protestants (also known as Huguenots) came under increasingly severe persecution by the monarchy during the last half of the seventeenth century, culminating in the revocation of all their religious rights in 1689. Condemned as heretics and traitors by the state and yet also forbidden by law to leave the country, the Huguenots fled by any method they could find to the neighboring Protestant countries of Germany, the Netherlands, and England. From there, many of them determined to leave Europe behind in an attempt to find a freer life in the New World.

An Annotated Edition Of The Journals Of Joseph W. Booth, Mormon Missionary To The Middle East (1889-1928), David Charles, Dr. James A. Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the assistance of a 1999 ORCA scholarship, I was able to make significant progress in understanding LDS Church history in the Middle East during the period 1880-1950. My work was divided between four separate but related projects, each of which will receive brief mention here. The first of these projects are the journals of Joseph W. Booth, long-time missionary in the Middle East, which were the focus of my ORCA proposal. Since receiving the scholarship in January, I have continued proofreading the journal typescripts with my wife, the first step in preparing them for publication. I have also continued …

Mormons And Monuments In “The Green Mountain State”, Keith A. Erekson, Dr. Richard E. Bennett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Joseph Smith was born December 23, 1805, at the Mack farm in Sharon, Vermont.1 Though his family moved when he was young, the influence of his Vermont heritage was important in the development of the young Prophet and subsequently on the restoration of the Gospel.2 After the exodus of the Saints to the west and their ensuing establishment in Utah, Elder Junius F. Wells returned to the east to seek out significant sites in the history of the Church. He lived at the Mack farm for years and conceived of the idea of erecting a monument.3 Work began on the …

Research Tom Polacca And His Descendants, Sterling Fluharty, Dr. David J. Whittaker Aug 2013

Research Tom Polacca And His Descendants, Sterling Fluharty, Dr. David J. Whittaker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Tom Polacca was a Hopi-Tewa in Arizona who was known for his leadership, progressive ideas, political involvement, and conversion to the Mormon Church. My intent was to research the life of him and his descendants, examining primary and secondary sources, as well as collecting oral history from descendants still living in Arizona. I expected to find a faith-promoting story of a man and his family’s quest for progress and truth. What happened, though, was a learning experience I had not anticipated.

Effective Domestication On Phytolith Morphometrics, Robert Ehlers, Dr. Terry Ball Aug 2013

Effective Domestication On Phytolith Morphometrics, Robert Ehlers, Dr. Terry Ball

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Phytoliths are silica deposits in plants that remain long-term in the soil after a plant dies. Phytoliths have unique characteristics that can be used to identify the phytolith’s original species. Phytolith morphometrics is a tool in archaeobotany that is used to identify ancient environments and landscapes. This study set out to discover if domestication of plants change phytolith morhpometrics. With identification of a probable effect of domestication on phytolith morphometrics, scientists can better identify periods of time when a plant species was domesticated. The research results can be a unique tool in identifying moments in history when a civilization began …

Clifford Cole: Was He One Of Them Or Was He Them?, Mitchell Mcclellan, Dr. Keith Wilson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Change is inevitable. Yet the direction of the change is influenced by who is steering. The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints experienced major doctrinal changes throughout its institutional history, especially during the 1960s and 19070s. The types of changes intrigued Dr. Keith Wilson and myself. In particular we wanted to determine who influenced the changes and why they shifted from more traditional beliefs.

Ceramic Typology Of Byu’S Egyptian Excavation Project, Audrey Crandell, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When I began my research with BYU’s Egyptian Excavation team, my chosen focus was to study the ceramics found at Fag el Gamous Cemetery. My original research intent was to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to read and understand the context of Egyptian ceramic pottery samples from the 200BC to 500AD / Greco-Roman Period as well as to create a new typology for the unique pottery found in Fag el Gamous Cemetery and compare it to the wider typology of the Egyptian Fayoum. I had planned to do this by a series of steps. I began my preliminary research …

Voices Rising From The Dust: An Osteological (Bone) Analysis Of Early Christians, Courtney Innes, Dr. Wilfred Griggs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Brief Introduction: Over the course of two days, February 17 and 18, the cluster burials 18, 19, 20, and 22 in the north-west area were uncovered from the square by the Egyptian workers and taken to the in-the-field lab station for analyses. Due to limited space, I will focus my attention on Burial 19. A brief conclusion will be presented following the analysis of the burial. The following accounts will describe and analyze the burials in detail:

Blood And Atonement In The Book Of Mormon From A Near Eastern Perspective, Michael Biggerstaff, Dr. Jared Ludlow Aug 2013

Blood And Atonement In The Book Of Mormon From A Near Eastern Perspective, Michael Biggerstaff, Dr. Jared Ludlow

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Behold, my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ; for, for this end hath the law of Moses been given; and all things which have been given of God from the beginning of the world, unto man, are the typifying of him” (2 Nephi 11:4). These words of Nephi, concerning the Law of Moses typifying Christ, are echoed by several other Book of Mormon authors, including Lehi, Jacob, Jarom, King Benjamin, Abinadi, Amulek, and Mormon. More authors could be added to this list if it included those who spoke of Christ’s fulfilling of …

Muslims In A Mormon World: A Look At The Assimilation Of Utah’S Muslim Population, Philip Sonntag Hurst

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the summer of 1847, Latter-day Saint pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. Escaping persecution, these pioneers came by wagon and foot leaving possessions, homes and even family in pursuit of a new life. The desire to live and worship freely drove thousands of pioneers through the Rocky Mountains to what is now Utah.

The History Of The History: Re-Discovering Joseph Smith’S First Vision, Samuel Alonzo Dodge, Dr. Steven Harper Aug 2013

The History Of The History: Re-Discovering Joseph Smith’S First Vision, Samuel Alonzo Dodge, Dr. Steven Harper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ways in which Mormon historians approach history has changed greatly over time. For years the historical discussion of Mormonism‟s early periods tended to one of two camps, critics who sought to defame Joseph Smith and discredit the religious movement he launched, or Mormon supporters whose efforts to exonerate the Prophet often resulted in excessive glossing of the blemishes found in the Church‟s origins. However, towards the middle of the twentieth century the historical method began to change the way in historians approached the past. Rather than disregard the work done by opposing scholarship, both groups began using the works …

Latter-Day Saint Involvement In The Civil War, Nathaniel Freeman, Dr. Kenneth Alford Aug 2013

Latter-Day Saint Involvement In The Civil War, Nathaniel Freeman, Dr. Kenneth Alford

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I decided to research Latter-day Saint participation in the Civil War when Professor Alford, a retired U.S. Army Colonel and BYU associate professor, contacted me regarding his interest in publishing a book on the topic. I had previously worked for him as a teaching assistant and had been interested in war history since I was in elementary school so I agreed and submitted my ORCA proposal. The purpose of my ORCA project was to document the service of Latter-day Saint Civil War veterans and how the Church as a whole was affected by that critical conflict. It was done in …
