3d Interpretation Of Architectural History, Davido Hyer, Brad Westwood Sep 2013

3d Interpretation Of Architectural History, Davido Hyer, Brad Westwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

BYU has a rich architectural history that is in danger of being forgotten with the changing times. I started this project with the intent to help preserve some of this deep history in a digital format that the public would be able to easily understand. Most students and faculty probably don’t know any of the background surrounding the building of the BYU campus. I will present a short history of the Academy building followed by a brief outline of the process I went through in creating this piece.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I started this project with the idea to research the influences of 19th century Christian religions in America on Joseph Smith’s ideas of the process of deification. I soon found that there was little that I could find on this topic and that I would have to be somewhat of an expert in this particular area in order to make any significant headway.

Lds Church Growth In Brazil, Robert A. Plowman, Dr. Mark Grover

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Ribeirão Preto is a large city in the interior of São Paulo and is well established and a place where the LDS Church has been well established. We spent more than a week in Ribeirão Preto as we studied and interviewed and researched the history of the Church in that city. We interviewed more than 40 prominent members of the Church, all of whom had been members since the earliest years of the growth of the Church in that area. We also worked in 13 other cities and performed more than 130 interviews in Brazil. It was a phenomenal experience …

A History And Analysis Of The Missel Romain Pour Les Diocese Du Zaire, Nathan Peter Chase Sep 2013

A History And Analysis Of The Missel Romain Pour Les Diocese Du Zaire, Nathan Peter Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper is an in-depth study of the Zaire Rite, which was developed after the Second Vatican Council in response to the call for greater inculturation. It explores the context in Rome, Africa, and the Congo that allowed such a radical revision of the Roman Rite to be approved. This paper looks at the structural changes that were made and the reasons for those changes while also exploring the differences in celebration between the Zaire Rite and the Roman Rite. The paper concludes with the implications of this rite for the Roman Rite and the Church today.

The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase Sep 2013

The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the origins and development of the epiclesis in Eucharistic prayers. It begins by looking at the pneumatological developments around the time of the First Council of Nicaea and the First Council of Constantinople in the 4th century. It then turns to the work of influential scholars in the field to try and present a status quaestionis on the epiclesis which seeks to answer the questions: 1) How did it develop?, 2) Where did it develop?, and 3) Why did it develop? The paper ends by affirming the uncertainty of scholarship on the answers to these questions, while …

Reexamining The Dating Of P. Oxy. Lciv 4405 (Ss52) Based On Section Division Analysis, Michael Trotter, Dr. Thomas Wayment Sep 2013

Reexamining The Dating Of P. Oxy. Lciv 4405 (Ss52) Based On Section Division Analysis, Michael Trotter, Dr. Thomas Wayment

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my project has been to reevaluate the current dating of P. Oxy. LXIV 4405, which is currently dated to the late II or early III century. This papyrus fragment preserves a section of Matthew 23: 30–39, and its original dating by Peter Parsons, and later support by J. D. Thomas, was based solely on paleography, or handwriting analysis. Although paleography is frequently used to date literary papyri, it is unfortunately an imprecise method of dating and is ideally used when all other methods are exhausted. However, P. Oxy. LXIV 4405 has some previously unidentified markings that I …

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright Sep 2013

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Practitioners of Aikido advance the claim, peculiar to many, that martial training can support moral action. This essay examines the claim by exploring communicative structures implicit in the response to attack made possible by this art's techniques. This exploration reveals three dimensions of intersubjectivity embedded in the practice of Aikido, dimensions that explicate the ethical imperative of the art.

Liberation As Revolutionary Praxis: Rethinking Buddhism Materialism, James Mark Shields Sep 2013

Liberation As Revolutionary Praxis: Rethinking Buddhism Materialism, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

While it is only in recent decades that scholars have begun to reconsider and problematize Buddhist conceptions of “freedom” and “agency,” the thought traditions of Asian Buddhism have for many centuries struggled with questions related to the issue of “liberation”—along with its fundamental ontological, epistemological and ethical implications. With the development of Marxist thought in the mid to late nineteenth century, a new paradigm for thinking about freedom in relation to history, identity and social change found its way to Asia, and confronted traditional religious interpretations of freedom as well as competing Western ones. In the past century, several attempts …
