A Study Of The Evolution Of The Angel Of Death In Jewish Literature, Carolyn Plocher, Dr. Jared Ludlow Sep 2013

A Study Of The Evolution Of The Angel Of Death In Jewish Literature, Carolyn Plocher, Dr. Jared Ludlow

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My original proposal was entitled “Ancient Near Eastern Perspectives on the Process of Death in the Hellenistic Period.” I initially chose this topic because the human fascination with death extends far back into history; in fact, it alone has been the reason for the founding of many cults, the erecting of innumerable monuments, and the writing of a great number of documents. Furthermore, the people most famous for their fascination with death are the inhabitants of the ancient Near East. Well-known examples of their enthrallment with death are the Egyptians who mummified their dead and built exquisite pyramids for funerary …

The Chrism In The Gospel Of Philip, Christpher J. Dawe, Dr. Gaye Strathearn Sep 2013

The Chrism In The Gospel Of Philip, Christpher J. Dawe, Dr. Gaye Strathearn

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Gospel of Philip, while not the most famous of the Gnostic texts found with the lost documents of Nag Hammadi Library in 1945 does offer an exciting glimpse at the ritual sacraments used by Valentininian Gnostics. In the view of the anonymous author of Philip these rituals were necessary for salvation. “The Lord,” according to the text “…did everything in a mystery, a baptism and a chrism and a eucharist and a redemption and a bridal chamber.” (Gospel of Philip 67:27-30.) Of these ordinances, one of the most important is the chrism:

Martin Harris: “A Fals Charge Of Standen”, Robert D. Palmer Iii, Dr. Steven C. Harper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Though unjustly remembered by some mainly as the man who lost the first 116 pages of the Book of Mormon, Martin Harris was an instrumental character in helping to bring about the Book of Mormon and the beginning of the LDS Church. Not only is he one of the three witnesses to the book, but he was also a benefactor, scribe, financier, and missionary for the new church. After he helped to convert his brother Emer to the gospel, they served together as missionaries from 1832-1833 in northern Pennsylvania. Recently, Mark Nelson discovered court documents of a trial involving Martin …

Santo Toribio: Religion, Politics, And Society, Thomas Evans, Dr. Alonzo Gaskill Sep 2013

Santo Toribio: Religion, Politics, And Society, Thomas Evans, Dr. Alonzo Gaskill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Santo Toribio is a saint who was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, but whose cult (used here in the very general meaning as “following”) includes many beliefs and practices that would categorize him as a “folk saint”, or unofficial saint. He died as a martyr of the Cristero (Soldiers of Christ) Rebellion in 1929, but beginning in the 1980’s stories began circulating concerning his miraculous intervention while helping migrants cross the border from Mexico to the United States. He was then canonized collectively in the year 2000 with a group of 26 other saints for reasons not related to …

Orality, Social Memory, And The Apocryphal Acts, David M. Nielsen, Dr. Kristian Heal Sep 2013

Orality, Social Memory, And The Apocryphal Acts, David M. Nielsen, Dr. Kristian Heal

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The corpus of texts that constitute the New Testament apocrypha is large, to make a gross understatement. It is a vast collection that spans the continents, languages, and centuries of the early Church and rightly so would take a lifetime to master. Originally I set out to see what we can learn about the office of the apostolate as seen through the lens of these acts. As I read I became increasingly interested in the idea of how these texts came into being and compositional issues in general. In the end my paper was still centered on how the apostleship …

Conflict Resolution In Islam: Document Review Of The Early Sources, Flamur Vehapi Sep 2013

Conflict Resolution In Islam: Document Review Of The Early Sources, Flamur Vehapi

Dissertations and Theses

Islam is the world's fastest growing religion. It is known to have an abundant and very rich amount of knowledge found in the Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, and as such, this religion has tremendously contributed not only to Muslim societies but also to the West. One aspect of this contribution explicated in this thesis is its contribution to the field of Conflict Resolution.

The primary purpose of this study is to unearth the tradition of peace and conflict resolution that comes out of the religion of Islam, which is unknown to many Muslims today. In this study, …

Becoming Lutheran: Exploring The Journey Of American Evangelicals Into Confessional Lutheran Thought, Matthew Richard

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to examine the journey of American Evangelicals into Lutheran thought. Otherwise stated, the research project studied the emotional struggles, linguistic confusion, worldview changes, and epistemological shifts that happen during the pilgrimage between two theological traditions.

The research findings are intended to identify valuable insights and provide avenues of comfort for those who are making this transition. Furthermore, the findings of this research are intended to aid Lutheran pastors as they care for and shepherd individuals who are coming into Lutheranism from American Evangelicalism.

The primary components of this study were the …

Audio Restoration Of Edison Diamond Discs And Historical L.D.S. Church Recordings, Daniel R. Thompson, David Day Sep 2013

Audio Restoration Of Edison Diamond Discs And Historical L.D.S. Church Recordings, Daniel R. Thompson, David Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

EDISON DIAMOND DISC RE-CREATIONS Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, made a vast collection of recordings from around the world. He reissued many on what is known as clay records or “Edison Diamond Disc Re-Creations.” Brigham Young University owns a substantial collection of these recordings. Unfortunately, because of their fragile format they are currently not easily available to the general public. With support from BYU’s ORCA Mentoring Grant I was able to research and restore a selection of Edison Diamond Disc Re-Creations and make them available to the public through the Harold B. Lee Library. Fortunately, through the generosity of …

Awesome Responsibility Of Leadership (Newport, Va), C. William Pollard Sep 2013

Awesome Responsibility Of Leadership (Newport, Va), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at Christopher Newport University (Newport, VA), Pollard outlines his vision of leadership, arguing that the exercise of true leadership can never be divorced from questions of faith. This is because leadership is fundamentally about character development. When exercised in a servant-like manner it has the ability to create an organization that is as much a moral community as it is a profit-oriented institution.

What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, And Understanding, Jordan G. Cinderich Sep 2013

What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love, And Understanding, Jordan G. Cinderich

SURGE

Last Saturday I stood on Stine Lake with a group of friends to pray and spread a message of “Peace for Syria.” This event was sponsored by the Newman Association in response to Pope Francis’s request that “Christians, and our brothers and sisters of other religions and every man and woman of good will, cry out forcefully: Violence and war are never the way to peace!” Students of all religions and backgrounds came to support us, and it was a very rewarding day for me as a Catholic and as a human longing for world peace and understanding. He Shall Be Called A Nazorean: Intertextuality Without An Intertext?, James F. Mcgrath Sep 2013

He Shall Be Called A Nazorean: Intertextuality Without An Intertext?, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Inexact quotations are a common phenomenon in Biblical intertextuality, and some suspected allusions are so fleeting and/or imprecise as to leave interpreters wondering whether an allusion was intended or not. But in at least one instance, Matthew 2:23, we have a reference to something unspecified prophets are supposed to have said, namely that “He shall be called a Nazorean,” which may not in fact have any intertext at all.

A Greater Understanding Of The Joseph Smith Translations, Paul W. Lambert, Dr. Thomas Wayment Sep 2013

A Greater Understanding Of The Joseph Smith Translations, Paul W. Lambert, Dr. Thomas Wayment

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible has been the source of religious research and study for years. From the time that the Prophet Joseph Smith began his revisions of the Bible, both believers and nonbelievers have been intrigued by the process and doctrinal contributions of the translation. For many years, it has been very difficult for scholars and others interested in the Joseph Smith Translation to obtain concrete information and perform comprehensive analysis of the revisions. Access to Joseph Smith’s materials, particularly the translation manuscripts and marked Bible, has been limited to scholars of the Reorganized Church of Jesus …

Significant Symbols In World Religions, Vance Bohman, Dr. Alonzo Gaskill Sep 2013

Significant Symbols In World Religions, Vance Bohman, Dr. Alonzo Gaskill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The intent of this project is to produce an encyclopedia of the symbols of the major religions of the world, providing information regarding their origin, as well as their use historically, and how that use has changed over time, including their adoption by other faiths. This will be the first time the symbols of all of the major world religions will be covered in a single publication, and will contain much more detail than many currently existing encyclopedias.

In Harmony: History And Perceptions Of Mormonism In Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1829–Present, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. J. Spencer Fluhman Sep 2013

In Harmony: History And Perceptions Of Mormonism In Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1829–Present, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. J. Spencer Fluhman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since Mormonism’s exodus from New York and Pennsylvania, due to what Joseph Smith described as a “spirit of persecution” in the area, popular perceptions among many locals have been anything but positive. “It is a fact, of which we are not particularly proud, that Susquehanna County harbored such a madman as Joe Smith,” wrote Emily C. Blackman in her 1873 History of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Negative perceptions were perpetuated throughout the twentieth century through continually recited folklore, often printed in newspapers and county histories, and even manifest itself in occasional hostility toward missionaries. More recently, however, popular attitudes to Mormonism …

Morphometric Analysis Of Banana Phytoliths, Terry Ball, Dr. Terry Ball

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The banana is an important crop in the South Pacific that provides not only food, but fiber and other products as well. Because it is a vegetatively propagated crop, it is only with the help of humanity that it has spread so far across that region.

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse Sep 2013

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Once ignored in national and international public policy, religion has made a comeback as policymakers have noticed the significance of the resurgence of religion, especially due to migration flows. While laudatory of these developments, this chapter specifies the need for a theological reading of the migrant religious practitioner as homo religiosus. First, we describe the social geographies of immigrant religion in an international context, drawing attention to the vibrancy of religious devotion, especially Christianity from the global south, among migrant groups. Second, we re-conceptualise religious belief through the theoretical work of John Milbank and Charles Taylor as they recuperate a …

The History Of Brigham Young University Architecture, Andrew Lorimer, Brad Westwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Upon entering Brigham Young University three years ago, I immediately fell in love with the campus. It was so beautiful and well maintained. Many buildings also caught my eye and I greatly desired to learn more about them. Luckily, I became informed of the opportunity to be involved in a project within the Harold B. Lee Library that would highlight the history of BYU’s architecture in a future L. Tom Perry Special Collections exhibit. My involvement with the project consisted of producing and shooting various short documentaries which would combine historical photographs with current video footage in order to give …

Photographing And Digitizing Argentine Church History. Project Id: 105490, Aaron Disbrow, Dr. Mark Grover

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There is an immense amount of church history throughout the world that is unknown to many of us. It was our intent and purpose in this project to aid the dispersion of this history throughout the church. Through Professor Mark Grover we were introduced to Nestor Curbelo, the church historian for the South America South Area. Brother Curbelo is the author of several books and is working on others that chronicle the history of the Mormons in the distinct countries of South America. These books provide volumes of information, but Brother Curbelo also has a great love of photography, which …
