Full Bloom: Diegetic Ui For Musical Phrases In Virtual Reality, Peter Armstrong, Elliot Cole, Peter Ferry, Joe Geigel, Susan Lakin, Richard Swientonioski, Zachary Talis, Jennie Thomas
Frameless
We propose a novel system for communicating musical note pitch and sequence information to users within a virtual reality environment. Our approach utilizes ‘Blooms,’ objects that resemble flowers with various petal arrangements. These formations, when constructed in view of users, act as diegetic, user-parsable encodings of their inputs. Blooms exist within the virtual space as simulated physics objects that collectively serve the role of a user interface.
The Innocence Of Lennie Small In Carlisle Floyd's Opera Of Mice And Men In Excerpts Presented As A Performer's Guide, Michael Robert Hendrick
The Innocence Of Lennie Small In Carlisle Floyd's Opera Of Mice And Men In Excerpts Presented As A Performer's Guide, Michael Robert Hendrick
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Of Mice and Men is a 20th century American opera composed by Carlisle Floyd. Carlisle Floyd also served as librettist, as he did with all of his operas. Based on the American novel of the same name by John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men is Carlisle Floyd's second most performed opera. This project serves to demonstrate the innocence of the role of Lennie Small, as seen through his intellectual shortcomings, enhanced by the vocal line and music of the composer. A performer's guide is also provided.

Abstract
This study examines Ronaldo Miranda’s Variações Sérias Sobre um Tema de Anacleto de Medeiros – Piano a Quatro Mãos, 1998, transcribed from the original, which was composed for wind quintet (1991). The piano duet version is well-known and part of the core repertoire of most Brazilian piano duos.
Enhanced by the interview with the composer, the paper starts by addressing the relevant facts of his rich and prolific musical life while tracing four compositional phases through a list of his piano works.
A brief history of the Serious Variations (so named in this paper) deals with its genesis, characteristics, …

“Jeszcze Polska Nie Zginęła”: Discovering The Life And Music Of Zygmunt Noskowski, Filip Starostka
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Polish music history suffers from a lack of representation. This misleads audiences to the common misconception that Polish music began and ended with Chopin. In reality, there are a number of important figures in 19th-century Poland whose efforts were seen as vital to the restoration of music culture in a time when conquering nations were actively working on destroying Poland’s history. The purpose of this lecture recital is to bring the biography and works of Zygmunt Noskowski, one of Warsaw’s most important musical figures, to English speaking audiences.
Born in 1846, Zygmunt Noskowski was active as a musician, …

A Practical Approach For The Applied Voice Instructor Utilizing Limited Piano Skills In The Studio Setting, Lee Whittington Ousley
A Practical Approach For The Applied Voice Instructor Utilizing Limited Piano Skills In The Studio Setting, Lee Whittington Ousley
Theses and Dissertations
Providing a process for reducing accompaniments to commonly assigned undergraduate vocal repertoire could aid instructors with limited piano skills in the applied studio setting. Through the use of questionnaires and an online survey, it was determined that there is a population of undergraduate instructors of voice that do not have an accompanist present to play during student lessons. Without an accompanist, many teachers are unable to play the pieces as written, which warrants the creation of reduced scores as useful alternatives to pre-recorded tracks.
An online survey was distributed to determine if the population of teachers was significant enough to …

An Introduction To Jazz Performance Skills And Techniques For Trombone: The Bordogni Jazz Project, William Ford
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Bordogni Jazz Project are arrangements of eight Bordogni Vocalises using harmonic and rhythmic elements from the jazz style, and new, original etudes that were composed based on the reharmonizations of the original Bordogni etude melodies. The material is intended to provide a comprehensive, but attainable resource for trombonists and educators which is inclusive of the stylistic nuances, performance practices, and cultural backgrounds associated with the jazz idiom. These are to be used as a resource to introduce classically trained trombonists to jazz playing and performance practices. Through study of this material, trombonists will ultimately be able to take advantage …
Features Of The Organization Of Dialogue Between The Teacher And Students In The Class Of Variety Vocal At The University During The Period Of Preparing The Student For Participation In The Executive Competition, Nokhida Fazel
Eurasian music science journal
The article analyzes the specifics of one of the most important components of communication between the teacher and students in any musical performing class - dialog. The author proposes to consider dialog as an extremely effective tool to unleash the student's creativity and consistently proves the particular difficulty of acquiring the art of dialog in the classrooms of variety vocals, the class of training of performers in the most competitive sphere of music culture. The author also argues that the process of preparing a student to perform an arts vocal competition is the most difficult component of the training from …

Preparing To Perform: Brillance, By Ida Gotkovsky, Connor Fast
Preparing To Perform: Brillance, By Ida Gotkovsky, Connor Fast
University Honors Theses
For a musician, preparing music for performance is a task undertaken daily. While the audience will only see the completed product, dozens of hours of dedicated work went into preparing that product. This thesis pulls the curtain back on preparing music and gives an insight on the type of preparation and work a musician might do to get a piece to the stage. Brilliance by Ida Gotkovsky is used as an example for how performance is developed. From the early stages of practicing, through rehearsal, and culminating with a performance, Preparing to Perform encompasses all of the steps in musical …

Developing Variation In The Late Work Of Morton Gould And Why It Matters, J. Wesley Flinn
Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic
American composer Morton Gould (1913-1996) was remarkably consistent stylistically over the course of his compositional career; this project examines certain motivic transformational techniques used in two of his last works, Stringmusic (1993, winner of the Pulitzer Prize) and Remembrance Day (Soliloquy for a Passing Century) (1995). These techniques, which can generally be filed under the principle of developing variation, are: 1. Mirroring and reversal; 2. Rotation; 3. Motivic expansion and contraction; 4. Additive sets; and 5. Asymmetric injection. After an overview of each technique, I give a full analysis of the fourth movement of Stringmusic using the approaches described …

During the 15th-18th centuries, the major European religious orders; the Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, and Jeronymites, journeyed to the newly colonized American territories in an attempt to convert the multitudes of natives peoples living there. Here’s a story: It’s well after midnight. I sit there, at my laptop, tequila in hand.Like a good machista(if I could ever become one), I don’t drink my tequila with much in it: a single ice cube, a squirt of lime, and a dash of tajín. I can feel my cheeks warming up as the alcohol kicks in. I remember what my mom told me about tequilaonce, “you feel it in your chest.” Rancheramusic isn’t for sober listening—for sober ears—you feel it in your chest. No charro(Mexican cowboy)would sing “Por Tu Maldito Amor” sober. Like any goodMexican, I too contemplate …
The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic
The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lecture recitals as the practice of pairing live music performance with verbal explication have been around since at least the end of the eighteenth century, but research on them is surprisingly scarce despite how ubiquitous they have become. What exactly are lecture recitals? Where did they originate? How are they conducted? Is there anything we could do to improve upon them?
In this dissertation I not only consider these questions but also propose a new kind of lecture recital I call a conversation concert. After a brief historical overview of lecture-recitalists from Johann Nikolaus Forkel to Rob Kapilow, I showcase …
"I Can't Breathe": Toward A Pneumatology Of Singing And Missional Musicking For Racial Justice In Jacksonville, Florida, Thomas Shapard
"I Can't Breathe": Toward A Pneumatology Of Singing And Missional Musicking For Racial Justice In Jacksonville, Florida, Thomas Shapard
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
This thesis develops a philosophy of musicking that intersects with missional ecclesiology and expands the role of music-making beyond the church walls. The central hypothesis assumes that predominantly white congregations in the Free Church tradition located in the southern United States incorporate ways of singing that reinforce, albeit inadvertently, attitudes toward others that buttress white ethnocentricity. Musical practices arising from a Western European heritage can promote cultural exclusivity as well as a perceived—yet false— sense of superiority. Is there an implicit theology of singing in white churches that engenders a culture of complicity and apathy in matters of racial injustice, …

The Heart Sutra is one of the most recited texts in the Mahayana Budddhist tradition. Traditionally, it is chanted rhythmically on a single pitch with a wooden drum. This setting of the Heart Sutra instead expresses the text through harmony and text painting.
The piece opens with a Hindustani-style invocation, referencing Buddhism’s Indian roots. Following that, a solo alto recounts a story of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara before all voices deliver his Insight, addressed to his disciple Shariputra.
In the first movement, lush harmonies are contrasted with open fifths, which represent “Shunyata,” or emptiness. This portion of the text discusses the …
