Singing The Sermon: Where Musicology Meets Homiletics, Emmett G. Price Iii
Singing The Sermon: Where Musicology Meets Homiletics, Emmett G. Price Iii
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
From the beginning of the Christian Church, singing and preaching have served as major tools of communication. In fact, they remain the most utilized methods of articulating and explicating personal and communal theologies across the diverse and expansive expressions of Christianity.
From the life, ministry, and legacy of Jesus Christ through the teachings of the Apostle Paul, the roles and functions of singing and preaching are well known but not well studied as a unit. From the foundational writings of the early Church Fathers through the various theses of the reformers, the acts of singing and preaching have been studied …
A Jamaican Voice: The Choral Music Of Noel Dexter, Desmond A. Moulton
A Jamaican Voice: The Choral Music Of Noel Dexter, Desmond A. Moulton
Dissertations
As we approach the twenty-first century, the world generally is moving away from the dominance of the European aesthetic towards a world music that owes much to the musical resources of the African-American tradition. Jamaica’s social and philosophical music belong mainly to that tradition, which includes the use of rhythms, and timbral and melodic resources that exist independently of harmony. Already in this century, Jamaicans have created two totally new music - Nyabinghi, which performs a philosophical function and Reggae, which performs a social function. The choral music of Noel Dexter is important because it is uniquely Jamaican/Caribbean in its …

A Collaborative Note: Colby Symphony Orchestra Is A True- And Unusual- Musical Community, Christina Dong
Colby Magazine
After a final warm-up trill, the room quiets and conductor Stan Renard reaches for the baton. As the musicians watch him intently, he raises his arms, takes a breath, and delivers the opening cue. With that, Colby students and faculty, high schoolers, local amateurs, and seasoned professionals begin to play.

Collaboration, Fieldwork, And Film, Lee Bidgood
ETSU Faculty Works
Excerpt: I never imagined that I would help produce a documentary film based on my ethnographic fieldwork. Meeting documentary filmmaker Shara Lange during new faculty orientation at the university where we were both newly hired eventually led to our film Banjo Romantika (2013)—a full-length feature based on my research on bluegrass music in the Czech Republic, in which I play a key role as writer, producer, and on-screen character. Taking part in this film project has led me to consider how film enriches relationships with field colleagues, providing new opportunities for teaching and learning. I find that collaborations like ours …

Guy Woolfenden: A Composer's Musical Dna, James A. Dreiling
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Guy Woolfenden is a British composer who has made a name for himself in England as the composer of over 150 scores for the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as music for numerous ballet and opera companies. In addition, he has composed fifteen pieces for wind band and eleven pieces for various wind chamber ensembles. Back To Black: An Exploration Of Amy Winehouse’S Music And Addiction, Courtney Ad Jamison
Back To Black: An Exploration Of Amy Winehouse’S Music And Addiction, Courtney Ad Jamison
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Amy Winehouse tragically died on July 23, 2011 as a result of years of alcoholism and drug abuse. Her beautiful jazz infused poetic music and her struggle with addiction created a juxtaposition of extremes that led to the foundational question of this creative project: “How can Winehouse’s music serve as the catalyst for a musical theatre piece that explores the impact of addiction on the human experience?” Extensive research was conducted on the themes of drug abuse, alcoholism, attachment in adult life, and domestic violence. The project culminated with a staged reading of a jukebox musical consisting of Winehouse’s music …
