Abstract

Directors of children’s choirs benefit greatly from understanding the pedagogical processes used in internationally-recognized children’s choirs. The sharing of ideas and resources among children’s choir directors is especially critical in the United States where diverse populations are the norm. Cross-cultural collaboration produces inspiration for new repertoire and exposes developing singers to the established performance practices upheld in choral communities of other nations. The effort to incorporate musical practices across regions builds meaningful relationships as directors and singers learn to understand, respect, and perform music of other lands. Composer, conductor, singer, and critic Reynaldo Hahn (1874–1947) was a highly influential figure in Paris’s artistic circles during the first half of the twentieth century. Today he is primarily remembered as a composer of art song. However, during his lifetime he was also admired as a sophisticated composer of operetta and chamber music, and his keen intellect and attention to detail also made him a discerning music critic and arbiter of taste. In 1913, he was invited to present a series of five lectures on the art of singing to the “Université des Annales.” This organization produced presentations by prominent …

This dissertation explores the specificities of the French piano school between 1920 and 1940, a defining time in the history of French pianism. This research focuses on the musical and technical traditions established at the Conservatoire de Paris and provides a comparative analysis of the pedagogy and musical aesthetics of three influential French artist-teachers of the twentieth century: Marguerite Long, Isidor Philipp, and Lazare-Lévy.

The researcher explored existing literature on music performance anxiety (MPA) that addressed the physiological effects of MPA, its causes, and various methods of mitigating its effects. The influence of self-efficacy and cognitive factors, such as the concepts of focus-of-attention and flow, were researched as they relate to MPA. The music culture and pedagogical approach utilized in institutions providing music education may affect the levels of MPA experienced by music students.
