Amateurism In Music Education (1967-2019): Three Calls To Action, Tom Fitzstephens
Amateurism In Music Education (1967-2019): Three Calls To Action, Tom Fitzstephens
Visions of Research in Music Education
John Kratus’ 2019 Music Educators Journal article "A Return to Amateurism in Music Education" contained what many may interpret as radical ideas to focus music education curriculum and instruction on amateurism. But upon further research, leaders within the profession have consistently affirmed the goals of amateurism. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare themes of Kratus’ concept of amateurism with declarative statements of the two most recent National Association for Music Education leadership summits, which charted the profession's future. Directed content analysis method and deductive content analysis of Kratus’ "Amateurism" article, compared to declarative reports of the …
The Academic-Support Group: Peer Mentoring Experiences Of Early-Career Music Teacher Educators, Christa Kuebel, Heather Waters, Christina Svec
The Academic-Support Group: Peer Mentoring Experiences Of Early-Career Music Teacher Educators, Christa Kuebel, Heather Waters, Christina Svec
Visions of Research in Music Education
The transition from doctoral student to higher education faculty member provides a unique set of challenges. Individuals attempt to balance research, service, and teaching requirements while also experiencing changes in their personal lives, such as geographical relocation. Peer-mentoring of early-career faculty may be used to support this challenging period and support the longevity of those who follow this career path. Therefore, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the peer-mentoring experience of a group of early-career elementary general music teacher educators. Research questions were: (1) How did participants describe the experience of peer-mentoring? (2) How did participation impact …
Empathy In And Through Music Education: Extending Artistic Citizenship, Amanda Ellerbe
Empathy In And Through Music Education: Extending Artistic Citizenship, Amanda Ellerbe
Visions of Research in Music Education
Bowman, Elliott, and Silverman's concept of artistic citizenship helps characterize how music education accomplishes social change. However, while Elliott et al. regard artistic citizenship as a means of exercising music in political ways, further investigation of how musical activities prepare students to consider effecting social change might more comprehensively describe artistic citizenship as a socio-musical endeavor. In light of the goals of social justice-oriented programming, the relationship between citizenship and artistic practice, one might think not only of music in the service of exercising citizenship in the greater community but also as a means of developing citizenship skills in the …

Ukulele In Music Class: Teachers’ Perspectives, Grace Doebler
Ukulele In Music Class: Teachers’ Perspectives, Grace Doebler
Visions of Research in Music Education
The use of the ukulele in classrooms and communities is growing, and, as a result, so is meaningful musical engagement from people of all ages. In this collective case study, I described the perspectives of three different music teachers and discussed how they implement the ukulele in diverse settings. Research questions were (a) what factors influence participants while creating ukulele groups or lessons, (b) how do participants use ukuleles in their classrooms, (c) what are participants' perceptions of the ukulele's value, and (d) what are participants' perceptions of students' interest in learning the ukulele? Participants were three music teachers located …
A Pedagogical Approach To The Technical Aspects Of Eugène Ysaÿe’S Solo Violin Sonatas No. 5 And No. 6, Jianda Bai
A Pedagogical Approach To The Technical Aspects Of Eugène Ysaÿe’S Solo Violin Sonatas No. 5 And No. 6, Jianda Bai
Dissertations, 2020-current
Since the completion of Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for the Solo Violin in 1923, performances of this important work in the violin literature have continually been well received by the public. This collection is frequently compared with J.S. Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for the Solo Violin, because of the clear connection between these two works. Each of Ysaÿe’s pieces were dedicated to six younger violinist contemporaries and were composed in consideration of the character of the dedicatee, forming a kaleidoscope of musical and technical delights for both the performer and their audience.
While each of Ysaÿe’s six sonatas offer …
Three Learning Contexts As Paths To Preservice Instrumental Music Teachers' Score Analysis, Rehearsal Planning, And Instructional Readiness: An Exploratory Study In Professional Development, Jennifer Lee Pulling
Three Learning Contexts As Paths To Preservice Instrumental Music Teachers' Score Analysis, Rehearsal Planning, And Instructional Readiness: An Exploratory Study In Professional Development, Jennifer Lee Pulling
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite an abundance of evidence-based research pointing to the effectiveness of long-term teacher professional development (PD) (Darling-Hammond, Hyler & Gardner, 2017; Desimone, 2009), instrumental music teachers who seek to improve their teaching practices are limited to and often prefer short-term PD opportunities (Bauer, 2007; West, 2020). In recent years, a growing knowledge base focused on music teacher PD has given attention to long-term, content-based and collaborative music PD (Conway, 2015; Kastner, 2014; Stanley, Snell & Edgar, 2014) while a dearth of evidence-based research exists on short-term music PD (Bauer, 2007; West, 2020). The purpose of this collective case study was …
Using Performance Cues As A Memorization Strategy With Group Piano Students By Implementing Teacher And Student-Directed Learning Approaches, Maria Eduarda Lucena Vieira
Using Performance Cues As A Memorization Strategy With Group Piano Students By Implementing Teacher And Student-Directed Learning Approaches, Maria Eduarda Lucena Vieira
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Multiple researchers have explored the use of performance cues in memorization for music students, suggesting that it is an effective method for memorization (Chaffin & Imreh, 2002; Gerling & Dos Santos, 2017; Hallam et al., 2008). Based on the current literature about the use of memorization strategies, researchers have found a method of a secure, solid, and effective technique called Performance Cues (Chaffin & Imreh, 2002; Hallam et al, 2008). When working with students, the teacher can guide them with steps to understand how the music works and help them to find a secure memorization process where they will feel …
Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan
Factors Influencing Student Continuance In Instrumental Music Classes: A Quantitative Analysis, Andrew Duncan
Masters Theses, 2020-current
In this quantitative study I investigated relationships between motivation, music aptitude, academic achievement, race, gender, and instrument type and student continuance in their first year of instrumental music study. Beginning instrumental music students (n = 30) completed the EVC Survey (Kosovich et al., 2015) to determine expectancy, value, and cost. I collected data on music aptitude, gender, race, and instrument type from teacher and school records, and conducted binary logistic regression and Chi-Square tests in order to determine predictors of continuance in instrumental music classes. I excluded gender, race, and instrument type from the logistic regression model because they did …
Unearthing The Artist: An Autoethnographic Investigation, Diane K. Daly
Unearthing The Artist: An Autoethnographic Investigation, Diane K. Daly
The Qualitative Report
In this paper I address how autoethnography was utilized to research the role and value of arts practice research in Western classical music professional training and practice, by a classically trained professional violinist. As a researcher, I use the philosophy and method of Dalcroze Eurhythmics as a framework to excavate the multiple layers of my own practice and investigate whether there is wider potential resonance for other professional performers. I utilize a mixed-mode approach, combining artistic practice with a number of documenting strategies, in particular using autoethnography as a tool for documentation and reflection. I propose key findings concerning the …

The link to the website is: https://emilymthomas10.wixsite.com/stringdom. I had three main objectives or purposes for developing this book: (1) to increase engagement in my orchestra class, and potentially orchestra classes around the country, using music that students already know and love; (2) to increase the representation of artists and composers of color in the string community; and (3) to create a method book that is more accessible and reflects …
When Did You Stop Singing? Elementary Boys' Attitudes And Self-Efficacy Toward The Act Of Singing, Eric D. Wyler
When Did You Stop Singing? Elementary Boys' Attitudes And Self-Efficacy Toward The Act Of Singing, Eric D. Wyler
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
The “missing males” epidemic is one which has baffled music educators and researchers for decades. Many research studies have been conducted to explore why boys choose to not be involved in choral ensembles at their middle and high schools. These studies list numerous retention/recruitment strategies; however, the problem remains. Many boys decide before they reach middle school whether they like to sing. The purposes of this study are to examine elementary age boys’ attitudes toward singing and determine at what grade level, if any, there is a significant difference in boys’ attitudes, to search for a relationship between boys’ attitudes …

Motivational Factors Affecting Recruitment And Retention In The Clever Band Program, Haley Morgan Adams
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Student participation in band has many educational, social, and life benefits for students; however, high attrition rates reflect that many students are not motivated to join and continue in band. This study surveyed sixth, eighth, and tenth grade students in the Clever R-V School District to examine the factors that the students self-identify when deciding to enroll in and persist with band in school. The survey data were analyzed to identify key factors that affect students’ recruitment and retention in school band. Students answered forty multiple choice questions that addressed areas of motivation including parental support, teacher-student relationship, intrinsic motivation, …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Music Theory Resources For The Middle And High School Choral Classroom With Alignment To Mississippi College- And Career-Readiness Standards, Amanda M. Brandon
Master's Theses
Middle and high school choral ensembles often struggle to produce musicians who are proficient in music theory skills; however, music theory and ear training skills provide numerous benefits to the student and ensemble. Promoting and fostering theory and ear training skills develop a student’s overall musicianship – thus, strengthening sight-reading skills– further leading to more accurate sight reading, using less rehearsal time, and the option of learning more, or even more technically challenging, literature. Additionally, developing independent musicianship skills encourages higher order and critical thinking in the choral classroom.
This project will examine and review selected music theory and ear …
Features Of The Organization Of Dialogue Between The Teacher And Students In The Class Of Variety Vocal At The University During The Period Of Preparing The Student For Participation In The Executive Competition, Nokhida Fazel
Eurasian music science journal
The article analyzes the specifics of one of the most important components of communication between the teacher and students in any musical performing class - dialog. The author proposes to consider dialog as an extremely effective tool to unleash the student's creativity and consistently proves the particular difficulty of acquiring the art of dialog in the classrooms of variety vocals, the class of training of performers in the most competitive sphere of music culture. The author also argues that the process of preparing a student to perform an arts vocal competition is the most difficult component of the training from …
Music Education, Child Development, And Academic Achievement: A Review Of Recent Literature, Connor M. Welsh
Music Education, Child Development, And Academic Achievement: A Review Of Recent Literature, Connor M. Welsh
University Honors Theses
In this literature review, the effect of music education on child development and academic success was evaluated. The claim that music education is beneficial to both child development and academic success has grown as a popular idea in recent decades. One example of this is the popular practice of having children or infants listen to classical music. This literature review aimed to evaluate this claim by examining a sample of the past ten years of research articles. The literature review was divided into two main categories: music education and cognitive development and music education and social-emotional development. Initially, it was …

A Study Of Pedagogical Approaches To Inform Instructors On How To Help Ease The Transition Of A Flute Student Switching To Oboe, Mai'ya Jackson
A Study Of Pedagogical Approaches To Inform Instructors On How To Help Ease The Transition Of A Flute Student Switching To Oboe, Mai'ya Jackson
Masters Theses
Young band students are seldom allowed to begin on the oboe, due to the specialized difficulties of the instrument. It is more prevalent for a student to begin on another instrument, such as the flute, and transition to the oboe after some initial experience. Many students switch to oboe from flute, since both instruments have similarities in fingering and wind technique. However, there are significant differences between the two instruments. These differences include embouchure formation, articulation, octave keys and alternate fingerings, intonation adjustment, and double reed care. If a student is not able to receive individualized instruction during this transitional …

Incorporating Video Game Music Into Music Education: Potential Benefits And Challenges, Zechariah D. Emery
Masters Theses
This study examines the potential benefits of incorporating video game music into various forms of music education. Since no previous scholarly work could be found on this specific subject, this study relies on examining various aspects of video game music and adjacent studies on student motivation and achievement. The study is broken up into several sections. An analytical study determines that video game music has developed to the point where it is just as complex as other forms of music and has unique aspects that could make it a valuable tool in education. The study also examines the uses of …
The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic
The Art Of Listening: A Conversational Approach To Lecture Recitals, Javor Bracic
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Lecture recitals as the practice of pairing live music performance with verbal explication have been around since at least the end of the eighteenth century, but research on them is surprisingly scarce despite how ubiquitous they have become. What exactly are lecture recitals? Where did they originate? How are they conducted? Is there anything we could do to improve upon them?
In this dissertation I not only consider these questions but also propose a new kind of lecture recital I call a conversation concert. After a brief historical overview of lecture-recitalists from Johann Nikolaus Forkel to Rob Kapilow, I showcase …
