Masters Recital, Deanne Gardner Johnsen Vanderford May 1977

Masters Recital, Deanne Gardner Johnsen Vanderford

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

If music is indeed that "eternal essence" man claims it is, it is through the voice and sinew of the living that it receives its' immortality. Through the living student, performer, listener, or critic, it is transformed from the silent sheets of past symbols, channelled through the present feeling and being of one's intellect and knowledge, interpolated into meaningful messages, and once perceived, given again to the timeless sounding halls of tomorrow's memory.

It is through the choosing, the sifting, the chewing, and the internalizing of one's unique vehicle of capability that material is chosen, studied, and rendered. This paper …

Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis May 1977

Graduate Recital, Donna Gatlin Davis

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Preparation for the graduate recital provides the Master's candidate an opportunity to exercise a variety of musical skills. Choosing the best possible program requires not only a working knowledge of the available repertory, but a personal assessment of the particular voice with its characteristic strengths and weaknesses. The final selection must reflect a fine balance of material difficult enough to provide a musical challenge and material with which a singer can feel comfortable in communicating.

Working toward the performance involves both intellectual preparation through research and physical preparation through vocal conditioning. It is not enough to anticipate vocal difficulties and …

Recital Report, Robert Steven Call May 1975

Recital Report, Robert Steven Call

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It was the purpose of the recital to afford the performer an opportunity of developing overall musicianship and gaining insight into the teaching of brass instruments through the preparation and performance of several pieces of varied musical styles.

The writer elected to perform on trombone, baritone horn, and tuba. Successful performances had been done on trombone and baritone horn prior to the preparation of the master's recital. However, the tuba was a new performance experience because serious study of the instrument had only covered about one year.

The writer was specifically concerned with the selection of literature suitable to the …

Recital Report, Alan P. Beste

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of the solo recital was to further develop my abilities on an instrument to my maximum capacity; to obtain a fuller understanding of the performance-related problems of the bassoon, and to discover and practice the solutions to those problems; to have an opportunity to encounter various musical styles from all periods; to gain a greater knowledge of the existing solo literature for the bassoon; and to gain a better understanding of performance problems in general as they relate to all areas of instrumental performance.

This report will present the works performed on that recital in the light of …

Graduate Recital, Joseph Golden Ward May 1973

Graduate Recital, Joseph Golden Ward

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The performer's presentation of the recital was concerned with finding the most logical order in which to play the instruments, demonstrating technique on the trombone, and improving playing technique on the french horn, baritone and tuba in an attempt to improve the performer's quality of teaching. The performer sincerely believes that any effort put forth to improve the technique on more than a major instrument will improve teaching procedures on all instruments. It is the performer's intention through this report to describe (1) the problems he encountered with improving his technique on the french horn, baritone and tuba; (2) how …

Recital Report, Fae Patterson May 1973

Recital Report, Fae Patterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Performance is vital to a musician and educator because through understanding and analysis of problems the teacher can better help his students. The specific problems for this performer and for this recital were: (1) The interpretation of the music according to the style intended by the composer, and (2) The mastery of the technic needed to overcome difficult passages.

The purpose of the musician was to prepare a recital which would demonstrate tone quality, control, phrasing, musicianship, and confidence in performance. The basic assumption was that the teacher-musician needs to demonstrate these qualities to enable him to more effectively work …

Recital Report, Dan I. Stowell May 1973

Recital Report, Dan I. Stowell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

While preparing the master's recital the writer had three major objectives: a desire to perform music from the most important periods of clarinet literature; to demonstrate characteristics interpretations of music of each period including styles of phrasing and various types of articulation; to demonstrate the ability to control various technical, dynamic, and tone production problems on the clarinet.

The objectives of this paper are to trace briefly the historical development of the clarinet; to give a short history of each composer whose works were involved in the recital; to give an analytical review of each movement, including form and major …

Brahms' Vier Ernste Gesange, Moses Turner Jul 1970

Brahms' Vier Ernste Gesange, Moses Turner

All Master's Theses

An investigation into the style characteristics of Vier Ernste Gesange should help one to better interpret and perform the composition. Inasmuch as this cycle is one of Brahms' most introspective compositions, a study of this work would seem to have value for any singer.

Visions Infernales: Characteristics Of Style And Interpretation, George F. Skipworth May 1970

Visions Infernales: Characteristics Of Style And Interpretation, George F. Skipworth

All Master's Theses

Visions Infernales by the French composer Henri Sauguet is a song cycle for the bass voice with piano accompaniment set to a text by the twentieth-century poet, }fax Jacob. This composition, published in France in 1950, is contemporary in style with considerable dissonance, and therefore is probably not well known in this country. However, student and professional should become more familiar with the style characteristics and performance of modern repertoire.

Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson May 1969

Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

For several years the writer had considered the idea that being an accomplished performer would be challenging and stimulating. He had been in public school music instruction and unable to develop this idea to the point that he would like. After his decision to work on a Master 's Degree in music, the thought of performing a recital was greeted as a welcome experience.

Certain aspects had to be considered before actual practice on a recital could begin. When planning a program to present for the recital, two facts came to mind. The writer had played the clarinet for 16 …

Recital Report, Douglas C. Brenchley May 1968

Recital Report, Douglas C. Brenchley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In selecting the compositions to be presented in this graduate recital, several important factors had to be considered. First, this candidate felt that it was very important to include a variety of music in the recital; songs and arias from different eras of history, performed in their original languages, including French, German, Italian and English. Representative composers had to be selected, allowing the candidate to sing music worthy of a graduate recital. This music also had to include those qualities which would tax the candidate's ability as an educator and performer; rhythm, style, range, interpretation and technique--all of these qualities …
