Senior Voice Recital Program, Emily M. Montelongo Dec 2024

Senior Voice Recital Program, Emily M. Montelongo

Honors Capstones

To meet the final requirements of my degree in Music Education, I organized, prepared, and performed my senior vocal recital. In addition to this, I completed my capstone by writing an additional version of my program with added program notes, elaborative information, and translations of pieces that are not in English. This program highlights composers Henry Purcell, Franz Schubert, Amy Beach, Leonard Bernstein, Manuel De Falla, Léo Delibes, and Jacques Offenbach. I completed extensive research on their lives, formulating this knowledge into biographies. I also included more detailed information on all of the pieces sung so audience members could have …

Senior Voice Recital Program, Ethan Gonzalez

Honors Capstones

I performed a vocal recital for my senior year at NIU as part of the final requirements for the completion of the Music Education degree. This document consists of in-depth biographies on the composers; Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Johannes Brahms, Claude Debussy, and Manuel De Falla. Additionally, I have provided research on each piece performed in the program that discusses the history, harmonic structure, and any cultural significance that ensued from the piece. I have also provided English translations to pieces sung in foreign languages. This recital is made possible by daily practice towards my musical skills and diligent …

Resurrecting The Muse: Kithara And Lyric Poetry Performance Practice In Greco-Roman Antiquity, Abigail Petersen Dec 2024

Resurrecting The Muse: Kithara And Lyric Poetry Performance Practice In Greco-Roman Antiquity, Abigail Petersen

Honors Projects

Both students and pedagogues of classical studies are familiar with the inherent musicality of Greek and Latin poetry, and they also widely accept the idea that poets sang their works to accompaniment on a kithara, or large lyre. However, little work has been done to perform works of poetry according to this tradition, and thus many modern attempts at oral recitation feature a forced and pedantic rhythm that bores the listener and fails to do justice to the revered art of Greco-Roman poetry. Through a review of primary and secondary sources, I examine the construction of the kithara, the context …

Exploration Of College Students’ Use Of The Occupation Of Music Listening To Support Engagement And Well-Being, Beverly Murphy, Morgan Breen, Jenna Breseman, Jailine Gonzalez, Tiesha Henley, Julianne Sta.Ana

Occupational Therapy Annual Research Colloquium

Heightened feelings of stress or anxiety can often accompany the transition to college, secondary to changes to an existing routine. These changes can potentially lead to occupational disruption or imbalances impacting students’ well-being and performance. This descriptive, exploratory research investigates whether college students are utilizing music as a means to support or enhance their occupational well-being. At this point, little is known about the extent of utilizing music listening as an occupational therapy intervention on college campuses to manage the allostatic load among students. To address this, a quantitative survey with close-ended questions was distributed virtually to college students within …

How Is Music History Important And How Can Music History Be Included Into Our Regular Music Curriculum?, Abby Michalak

Honors Projects

From a music education major's perspective, music history is rarely taught in high school and middle schools today. Music history can teach so much to students, including context, style, and even why pieces were written. Through this paper, we explore why music history is an important topic to be taught in schools and how music programs across the country can include it into their curriculums through smaller sized lesson plans. This paper includes a sample curriculum that goes through the different period of music and a unit for "spotlights" for countries that are rarely represented in high school and middle …

Software Implementations And Analyses Of The Emotional Impact Of Various Binaural Beat Classifications Layered Into Music., Neil Azimi Dec 2024

Software Implementations And Analyses Of The Emotional Impact Of Various Binaural Beat Classifications Layered Into Music., Neil Azimi

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This study explores the psychoacoustic effects of binaural beats, which are produced when sinusoidal waves of slightly differing frequencies are played into each ear, leading to brainwave entrainment. Binaural beats are categorized by frequency bands (e.g., Beta: 14–30 Hz for energy, Theta: 4–8 Hz for relaxation), each associated with different psychological effects. This research contributes to the field by empirically analyzing whether binaural beats alter the emotional impact of music. Past studies have investigated the potential benefits of binaural beats in relaxation and energy stimulation. However, their effects, when combined with music, especially regarding a song's perceived emotional quality or …

Manifest Destiny, A Repeat Of History: Scoring Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Emilie Montoure Dec 2024

Manifest Destiny, A Repeat Of History: Scoring Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Emilie Montoure

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

In this paper I will examine Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining through the lens of Manifest Destiny. Using this angle, I discuss how protagonist Jack Torrance takes on the role of a settler as he cares for the Overlook Hotel and becomes verbally abusive and controlling to his wife and son. I use the disconcerting, avant-garde scores of Twentieth Century modernist composers Béla Bartók, György Ligeti, and Krzysztof Penderecki to analyze how this story of westward expansion is conveyed. This chilling soundscape involving extreme dissonance, complex rhythms, layering of sounds, and unconventional techniques scores Jack’s psychological descent into murderous …

From Vinyl To Viral: Rock 'N' Roll's Timeless Comeback In Today's Digital Age, Victoria Lucas Dec 2024

From Vinyl To Viral: Rock 'N' Roll's Timeless Comeback In Today's Digital Age, Victoria Lucas

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Rock 'n' roll from the 1950s-1980s–a category of music often referred to as “oldies”–is experiencing a remarkable comeback among younger audiences, even being favored over today’s music trends. While nostalgia may play a role, it is clear that this genre offers something unique that modern music often lacks. As a Gen Z rock ‘n’ roll lover myself, I explore the reawakening of rock 'n' roll among Millenials and Generation Z and examine the reasons why this genre resonates so deeply with my peers, even half a century later. In this paper, I discuss how the music of that era shaped …

A Comparison Of Vestibular Function In Young Adult Musicians And Non-Musician Peers, Alexandria W. Greene, Ashley G. Flagge, Nicholas S. Stanley Dec 2024

A Comparison Of Vestibular Function In Young Adult Musicians And Non-Musician Peers, Alexandria W. Greene, Ashley G. Flagge, Nicholas S. Stanley

Ashley Flagge Publications

Purpose: The majority of college-level musicians exceed the daily recommended noise dose level during instrumental practices and performances, although less than one-third report wearing hearing protection while playing their instruments. Although the hazardous effects of music on the auditory system have been established, even in young adult musicians still early in their musical careers, the effects of music on the vestibular system are still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to examine vestibular/balance differences between young adult musicians and non-musicians to determine the effects of music exposure on the vestibular system.

Method: Young adult participants aged 18-27 years …
