Honors Theses

Postcards is a senior recital celebrating saxophone repertoire from diverse composer nationalities, including composers of Czech, French, Japanese, and German background. While this program only begins to scratch the surface of both composer and stylistic diversity present throughout the saxophone repertoire, it represents some of the most significant influences on the music available to saxophonists. Bookending the recital program are two French contest pieces, Brilliance by Ida Gotkovsky and Lamento et Rondo by Pierre Sancan. The morceaux de concours, or competition pieces, written for the Paris Conservatory are an important tradition because of the history of saxophone pedagogy in Paris. …

A New Age Of Film Music: Emotional Responses To Midi Mockups Versus Orchestral Recordings, Amberlee Woodhouse

Music software is becoming advanced enough to make it difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a MIDI mockup and a recording of an orchestra. This study compares the emotional responses subjects have to electronically created recordings to the emotional responses subjects have to orchestral recordings. Little research has been done on this subject. I hypothesized that the two recordings would communicate the same emotions, but the live recordings would create more emotional intensity. 65 subjects between the ages of 18 and 24 from various musical backgrounds were tested. Monsoon: South Asian Studies Association Journal

The integral nondualism of Sri Aurobindo can be traced to the great pronouncements (mahāvākya) of the Upanishads and later commentaries. This study examines teachings on the Supermind (vijñāna) and the other four kinds of consciousness that define human reality: Matter (annaṃ), Life (prāṇaḥ), Mind (manaḥ), and Bliss (ānanda). Through Yoga and Tantra, one learns and embodies the pathway to the divine.

The Eurasia-Pacific is a dynamic region of rapid economic growth, cultural awareness, natural resource exploration, and military buildup. The concept of the region is relatively new, featuring contested vast areas of geo-resource space of numerous cultures and languages. In this article, the author examines the royal bath called Tushā Hiti located in Sūndari Chowk (Beautiful Courtyard) of Pātan Durbar Square, using six different methods of investigation. The question: What is in a name? started the ball of investigation rolling and along the way were added more supporting blocks such as history, iconography, function and purpose, notion of purity and impurity, and finally the hiti in popular culture to get a complete picture of the subject in question.

"A Festival of Form" was both an event at Bridwell and Perkins School of Theology and a conceptual piece of music that lasted several days. In this rendering, the "piece of music" was articulated in a fluid combination of activities that included works by other composers, including John Cage. The activities involved--from lectures, conversations, and meals to actual performances of both short works and especially the world-record breaking rendition of "Organ2/ASLSP" played by Christopher Anderson--comprise the entirety of "A Festival of Form" as performance piece. The river Ganges is a symbol of wealth, purity and eternity, and its sacred waters have inspired sages, philosophers, and artists in India who have immortalized its divine imagery. However, it has rarely been understood from a historical point of view, as to how it became so sacred and to view it from a multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary perspective with an accumulation of layers of historical thought and practices, provides a rationale for the living practices around the river. Grammy winning conductor James Blachly brings his Experiential Orchestra to MSU to join forces with the MSU Symphony Orchestra in an evening of immersive music making. In true Experiential Orchestra style, the audience members will surround and be surrounded by the orchestra in creative ways as the combined ensembles present works by the Cali School Artist-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, excerpts from Dame Ethel Smyth's opera, The Prison, and William Dawson's 1934 Symphony No. 1, Negro Folk Symphony, the composers only symphony.

In March 2022, I was working at my computer when this increasingly rickety chair collapsed beneath me! It was time to get back to responsible eating and get a new chair. But amid the intensive planning and production of The Festival of Form: John Cage and the Infinite Human events, it occurred to me that I could play around with the ideas of music, sound, noise, and silence, and particularly the unconventional experiments of notation and scoring. EMET Projects

Integration of the arts into medical education has numerous benefits, including reducing burnout and producing empathetic physicians. Investment in arts-related activities has expanded considerably. However, funding remains a common limitation for further integration of arts into medical education. Clarifying student preferences and barriers to music programs can optimize such limited resources to best suit medical student needs.
