This recital abstract serves as supplemental material to the Master of Music degree recital by Tyler Darnall. The recital will take place on April 15, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. Central Standard Time in Davis Hall at the University of Northern Iowa. This recital will feature works by Jeffrey Dennis Smith, Elliott Carter, J.S. Bach, Alyssa Weinberg, Nicolas Martynciow, John Cage, and Iannis Xenakis. Aiden Endres, Nicole Loftus, Xander Webb, and Matthew Kokotivich will be collaborating with Darnall for his recital. In addition to providing musical and historical context, this document will address specific considerations regarding performance practice for each piece.

The purpose of this recital is to partially fulfill the requirements for the Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy, and to display musical proficiency on drum set, piano, and bass guitar. Luke Sanders presented his graduate jazz recital on April 24, 2022, at 4:00 PM in Bengtson Auditorium. The recital program included ten pieces in total: two pieces on drum set, piano, and bass guitar, and four pieces on electric guitar. These pieces displayed an eclectic set of styles and skills pertinent to the demands of the jazz pedagogy degree. The pieces performed featured various ensemble sizes and instrumentations …

This thesis examined a phenomenological inquiry into the lived experiences of music therapists in a metropolitan city in the United States. During the study, five music therapists were interviewed about their self-care practices and experiences with burnout. Data included a recorded Zoom transcription of the 30–45-minute open-ended interview. The data was analyzed through Moustakas’ (1994) cluster of themes approach. Four themes emerged from the data analyses of the interviews: living/working in a metropolitan city, self-care practices, advice for entry level music therapists, and knowledge of and experience with burnout symptoms. This research presents an evaluation of my compositional process with regard to synesthesia as a creative tool. Traditionally, the phenomenon of synesthesia has been discussed in perceptual terms, such as something that is seen visually elicits an additional experience in another sensory domain, such as sound. However, recent research has identified that there is an additional process involved in creating the secondary sensory experience, which is a semantic representation of concepts (ideasthesia). Numerous music therapy models have been formulated for implementation in the field of mental healthcare. However, few have specifically focused on the features and contexts of short-term therapy in acute psychiatric settings. The purpose of this narrative review was to identify music therapy interventions utilized in short-term music therapy with acute psychiatric patients. Studies that described interventions with acute psychiatric patients in short-term music therapy were selected based on the keyword searches of computerized databases, hand searches, and authoritative texts. Benedicto Sáenz 'Libera Me': Occidentalisms In Latin America Nineteenth-Century Sacred Music, Andrés R. Amado

This article uses concepts of Occidentalism and the musical analysis of a funerary responsory by nineteenth-century Guatemalan composer Benedicto Sáenz (1807-1857) to examine possible reasons why music from nineteenth-century Latin America remains relatively neglected in the region and beyond, unlike the better explored repertoires from colonial times and from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Identifying students with literacy disabilities, such as dyslexia, efficiently in public schools is crucial for early intervention. Literacy and musical skills share common neurological pathways, so music educators possess a skill set that could be advantageous in screening students. This study utilized a descriptive research design to identify music educators’ roles in the identification of students with dyslexia/reading disabilities in Kentucky’s public schools, and their attitudes about those roles. Data was collected through a survey completed by Kentucky public school music teachers. Purpose

This longitudinal research examines US symphony orchestra sector organizations to determine individual efficiencies in allocating resources (donations, governmental/private funding, etc.) for desirable outputs (concerts, educational programs, community outreach). It provides researchers and managers with a tool for identifying, assessing and mitigating organizational inefficiencies.

Design/methodology/approach

This study assesses relative efficiencies in performing arts organizations using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a widely-used nonparametric data-intensive benchmarking technique that determines an optimal “production frontier” of best-practice organizations among their peers and assesses their abilities to turn multivariate inputs into multivariate desired outputs.

Classical Aboriginal culture in Australia consists of many different kinds of ceremonies, including travelling ceremonies that are often shared across linguistic and geographical boundaries. Each of these ceremonies is made up of dozens of different verses. Perhaps the most widely known travelling ceremony is one referred to in some areas as ‘Wanji-wanji’. This was known over half the country and dates back at least 170 years, as evidenced in eleven legacy recordings and fieldwork interviewing more than 100 people across the western half of Australia. The 'Marimba-Vibe' Double Keyboard: An Explorative Investigation Of A Nascent Solo Percussion Idiom, Paul Tanner

The development of the concert marimba and invention of the vibraphone in the twentieth century was accompanied by a concomitant growth in repertoire for each instrument. Both belong to the core instrumentation of many new music groups, and percussionists are at times required to perform the instruments simultaneously, combining their distinct timbral personalities. However, the number of solos for the ‘marimba-vibe’ (the term I use to describe a marimba and vibraphone arranged in close proximity to each other in order to be performed by one player) without additional percussion instruments, is minimal.
