One of Zappa’s many cherished styles of music was the doo-wop of the mid-1950s through the early 1960s. His love for the style culminated in 1968 with a poor-selling and often forgotten doo-wop record, Cruising with Ruben & The Jets. While the record earned little praise from critics and fans, Zappa considered it as a landmark of his early career, as evidenced in his autobiography. This thesis investigates Zappa’s relationship to doo-wop and “perversion” of the style as it culminated in Cruising.

This dissertation aims to bring to light the music of Johann Melchior Gletle (1626-1683); a Swiss-German composer who lived the majority of his life working as the organist and Kapellmeister of Augsburg Cathedral. The primary focus of this dissertation is a single volume of music composed by Gletle in 1668: the Expeditionis Musicae Classis II, Op. 2. Consisting of thirty-six vesper psalms, it is conjectured that this publication was a form of ‘functional music’ intended for liturgical performance at Augsburg Cathedral. This kind of intertextuality in popular music provides artists and audiences with short-cuts to making and interpreting meaning. It draws on nostalgia, past listening experiences and idealised perceptions of the past. Artists engaging in this practice risk criticism for being too derivative. Conversely, artists who are too innovative and forward-looking run the risk of not connecting to listeners. This study will assess the solo guitar works of Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (1939–present) in terms of influence from Santería, a ritual music derived from WestAfrican slaves and still practised in Cuba. This will be achieved by using both analytical and evaluative processes. For the former, a range of influential parameters have been identified, each falling under three strands: rhythmic and metric, structural, and melodic. The origin of playing behind-the-beat is attributed to the Hungarian conductor Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922), who is one of the most important figures in the history of the art of conducting. Nikisch, serving as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra during a critical moment in the development of orchestral playing, influenced a generation of conductors who followed. Although Baldassare Galuppi was arguably the best known and most successful Italian composer of the eighteenth century, his name, his history, and his works have been relinquished to the periphery of the historiographical narrative. While Galuppi's masses, operas, and solo motets have been examined, his vespers psalms have been neglected by previous musicologists; most of the existing studies have been superficial, with little consideration of important questions such as formal approach, stylistic development, compositional idiosyncrasies, questions of authenticity, or what those factors might collectively tell the twenty-first-century musicologist about music in settecento Venice.

This study critically examines the popular rock anthem Bohemian Rhapsody to understand why the song has remained a lasting and eminently compelling standard for the progressive rock genre and why it has appealed through an inter-generational scope. WWII saw the forced removal of around 120,000 Japanese Americans to concentration camps across the United States. Despite being incarcerated in often unforgiving social, political, and physical environments, many incarcerees developed means of continuing Japanese cultural traditions and music. Since that time, former incarcerees have largely avoided detailed discussion of their experiences of imprisonment, and as such, there is little information to determine what kind of impact incarceration had on their individual and collective musical worlds.

งานวิจัยเรื่องการสร้างสรรค์และการบรรจุเพลงประกอบการแสดงของครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาชีวประวัติและผลงานของครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด และเพื่อศึกษาวิธีการสร้างสรรค์และการบรรจุเพลงประกอบการแสดงของครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด ครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด เกิดเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2494 เป็นชาวจังหวัดพัทลุง เริ่มฝึกหัดดนตรีด้วยตัวเองตั้งแต่วัยเด็ก จากนั้นก็ฝึกเป่าปี่จนมีความรู้ความชำนาญในการบรรเลงเครื่องดนตรีโนราและหนังตะลุงในทุก ๆ ชิ้น โดยเฉพาะปี่ ในการวิเคราะห์เพลงประกอบการแสดงของครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด พบว่า การแสดงทั้ง 16 ชุดการแสดง ใช้เพลงจำนวนทั้งหมด 73 เพลง ทั้ง 73 เพลงนั้นเป็นเพลงที่ครูอำนาจ นุ่นเอียด ได้ประพันธ์ขึ้นใหม่เป็นจำนวน 14 เพลง ครูอำนาจประพันธ์โดยใช้วิธีการพลิกแพลงทำนองจากทำนองเพลงเดิมที่มีอยู่ การยุบโดยตรงและการยุบโดยวิธีการพลิกแพลงทำนองจากเพลงเดิมที่มีอยู่ ในการศึกษายังพบลักษณะแบบแผนการซ้ำทำนองในหลาย ๆ แบบเช่นเดียวกับเพลงพื้นบ้านภาคใต้ที่ครูนำมาเรียบเรียงไว้ในการแสดง มีการเปลี่ยนบันไดเสียงและใช้เสียงหลุมเพื่อให้เกิดสำเนียงที่ไพเราะอ่อนหวาน และยังมีลักษณะที่โดดเด่นอื่น ๆ อยู่อีก 5 ประการได้แก่ 1) การใช้เสียงโดดเด่น หรือที่เรียกว่า Pillar Tone 2) การย้ำทำนอง 3) การใช้กระสวนจังหวะของทำนองแบบคงที่ 4) การใช้ทำนองโอดพัน และ 5) การใช้ทำนองฉายรูป

In February 1765, the first boat with French-speaking refugees from Acadia in Nova Scotia arrived in the present-day state of Louisiana, where their description of themselves as Acadians changed, just as regional dialects change, into Cajuns. Their departure was part of what one historian of Cajun culture calls an “ethnic cleansing.” The British had acquired French Canada two years before and deported the Catholic Acadians to other colonies; a group of them chose instead to head for what they thought was French territory. It turned out that the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which had conveyed French Canada from France …

The Effect Of Music Attention Control Training (Mact) For Pre-Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Vienna Sa

The purposes of this study are to investigate the effect of the Music Attention Control Training (MACT) on three types of attention (sustained, selective, switching) in pre-adolescents (10-14 years old) with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to identify the impact of the level of severity (mild, moderate, severe) on changes in attention scores. This modified replication study included 23 participants randomly assigned to treatment and control group stratified based on severity of ASD. Significant results via two-tailed paired-sample t-test (p< .10) indicated significant positive trends with the treatment group for the 3 out of 4 subtests of selective attention: Hector Cancellation, Hector-B Cancellation, and Hecuba Visual Search; 1 out of 4 subtests of sustained attention: Sustained Attention Response Test (SART); and the single subtest of switching attention: Red & Blues, Bags & Shoes (RBBS). Results call for modifications to further support the role of MACT on attention skills with pre-adolescents with ASD. Implications for future research and contributions to clinical practices in music therapy are discussed.

Among musicians who seek medical help for their injuries each year, half are pianists. Improper playing technique is a factor influencing the development of injury. This research project focuses on the types and causes of physiological injury in the process of piano playing and includes methods of avoiding such injuries.

The types of piano-related physiological injury and associated conditions that are discussed include tenosynovitis, focal dystonia, and muscle pain. Relevant literature and investigative data—and some legends—are compared and sorted. This project investigates Joby Talbot’s choral composition Path of Miracles, focusing on interpretive insight as well as musical and extra-musical understandings related to the subject matter, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain known as the Camino de Santiago. It explores the sources and methods of generating dramatic intensity and seeks to understand how the composer achieved particular dramatic effects. This thesis situates figure skating, music, and Cold War politics during three separate Winter Olympic Games held in 1968, 1976, and 1988, examining the impact of this intersection on the sport of figure skating. Through a survey of seven Olympic medal-winning figure skating programs in the men’s and women’s single divisions and the pairs’ division, evidence of the relationship between politics and music is examined in the musical selections of the skaters’ programs. Kaija Saariaho’s work Maan Varjot is a relatively new addition to a set of repertoire that includes the organ as a part of the orchestra. This commission from the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Orchestre National de Lyon, Southbank Centre, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, was premiered in 2014 and features the organ as a timbral enhancement and contrast to the orchestra.
