I write this piece primarily as a musicologist and amateur early music practitioner (viola da gamba player) who tries to understand the ways twentieth- and twenty-first century musicians and scholars have imagined and performed ancient music and dance. This essay emerged from my book project Performing Antiquity: Ancient Greek Music and Dance from Paris to Delphi, 1890-1935 and brings my training as a historical musicologist and dance historian to bear on issues typically of concern to archaeologists, classicists, and linguists.

In recent years, scholars and pedagogues alike have increasingly recognized the creative potential of thoroughbass. Yet too often, thoroughbass instruction today still lacks good models. G. P. Telemann’s Exercises in Singing, Keyboard-Playing, and Thoroughbass (1733–34) fills this need. This collection contains forty-eight short, simple arias with thoroughbass realizations by Telemann himself. Telemann also provides brief commentary to each aria. This important collection is presented here for the first time as a modern pedagogical edition with English translation (Vol. 1), worksheets for realization (Vol. 2), and audio recordings (with and without voice part). Previous studies have shown that visual art courses for medical students have improved their diagnostic skills. A music course in a similar fashion may enhance their ability to recognize patient emotion in the patient’s voice. Identifying patient emotion via auditory cues allows future physicians to appropriately respond to patients’ mental states and provide empathetic care. This study proposes that medical students who complete a course in recognizing emotional cues in music will outperform a control group in correctly identifying emotion in the human voice.

This dissertation analyses the playing style of Australian jazz saxophonist Julien Wilson. More specifically, the investigation focuses on his recordings with the Julien Wilson Trio – arguably Wilson’s best known and most original group – featuring Wilson on tenor saxophone, Stephen Grant on piano accordion, and Stephen Magnusson on nylon-string and electric guitars. Although Wilson has received many accolades throughout his career and has been highly lauded by critics, fans and fellow musicians, there is very little academic research investigating his playing style. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of verbal skills as an intervention in music therapy practice in three models of music therapy: (a) analytical music therapy (AMT), (b) the Bonny method of guided imagery and music (BMGIM), and (c) Nordoff-Robbins music therapy (NRMT). Data were collected from three interviews that included each professional’s use of verbal skills in their respective model of music therapy. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Little to no research has been done on the history, development and current practice of a specific country’s approach to music therapy. This study examines the development of music therapy in Hungary with regards to cultural influences, which the researcher has a unique understanding of as a first-generation Hungarian-American. Three Hungarian music therapists were invited to participate in qualitative interviews in Hungarian. After transcribing and translating the interviews, the data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis in order to locate themes, patterns and viewpoints. Five themes and one sub-theme emerged. This study sought to understand further the relationship between the music therapist’s personal experience in formal music education and their music therapy practice. Key questions asked by the researcher included how music therapists describe, view, and conceptualize their own experiences of formal music education through the lens of music therapy practice. Data collection included semi-structured interviews from three practicing music therapists. The themes revealed within the data were organized into areas of intrapersonal and interpersonal experiences. This Senior Honors Thesis explores the social and cultural impact of confessional musical composition and performance on the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598). Because Huguenots and Catholics identified with and were widely identifiable by their respective musical styles, cultural divisions between each confession were emphasized by differences in music. This capacity of sacred and confessionally-influenced secular music to highlight and reinforce societal divides is evidenced by the interconfessional violence that accompanied the public performance of sacred music in cities as well as the pressures imposed on composers to create music which clearly aligned with their respective confessions. A score-following program traces the notes in a musical score during a performance. This capability is essential to many meaningful applications that synchronize audio with a score in an on-line fashion. Existing algorithms often stumble on certain difficult cases, one of which is piano music. This paper presents a new method to tackle such cases. The method treats tempo as a variable rather than a constant (with constraints), allowing the program to adapt to live performance variations. วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อการศึกษาแนวคิด วิธีการ และมูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับวงปี่พาทย์นางหงส์ โครงสร้างบทเพลงและการเรียบเรียงบทเพลงประเภทเพลงนางหงส์ โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผู้วิจัยมีวิธีดำเนินการวิจัยจากการศึกษารวบรวมข้อมูลที่เกี่ยวข้องในเอกสารสิ่งพิมพ์ต่าง ๆ รวมถึงการเก็บข้อมูลสัมภาษณ์ครูผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย โดยทำการศึกษาข้อมูลหลักในกรณีศึกษาของครูภัทระ คมขำ ผลการวิจัย พบว่า ครูภัทระ คมขำมีแนวคิดที่เป็นลักษณะเฉพาะในการเรียบเรียงบทเพลงนางหงส์ เพื่อส่งเสริมกระบวนการการเรียนรู้ในระบบการศึกษาทางด้านดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย โดยมุ่งเน้นหลักวิชาการและการฝึกปฏิบัติเป็นสำคัญ อีกทั้งยังเป็นการอนุรักษ์บทเพลงต่าง ๆ รวมถึงการใช้นัยยะการเรียนรู้ของโบราณาจารย์ทางดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย การวิเคราะห์โครงสร้างและวิธีการเรียบเรียงบทเพลงนางหงส์ของครูภัทระ คมขำ มีจำนวน 10 เพลง ได้แก่ เพลงอนงค์สุชาดา เพลงมุล่ง เพลงแขกไทร เพลงเทพบรรทม เพลงกัลยาเยี่ยมห้อง เพลงสาลิกาชมเดือน เพลงวิเวกเวหา เพลงอาถรรพ์ เพลงการเวกใหญ่ และเพลงน้ำค้าง พบว่ามีกระบวนการในการเรียบเรียงเพลงนางหงส์แสดงถึงความสามารถในการสร้างสรรค์รูปแบบของโครงสร้างเพลงนางหงส์ จำนวน 8 รูปแบบ และในส่วนของวิธีการเรียบเรียงเพลงนางหงส์มีการเลือกใช้บทเพลงที่มีความสัมพันธ์ชององค์ประกอบสำคัญต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ การใช้กลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูล ความเชื่อมโยงของเสียงลูกตก สำนวนเพลง สำเนียงภาษาของเพลงและนัยยะความหมายของบทเพลงที่มีความสอดคล้องสัมพันธ์กันอย่างกลมกลืนเป็นไปตามระเบียบแบบแผนทางหลักทฤษฎี ดุริยางคศิลป์ไทย

Students of composition develop two skills simultaneously: craft and creativity. Since students are more naturally inclined to focus on one of these skills over the other, finding the proper balance is an educational challenge. An effective pedagogical system for composition cultivates both of these necessary skills.

Imitation was a preferred pedagogical approach during the Classical period. In his 1848 book School of Practical Composition, Carl Czerny instructs his readers to apply the extensive rules of composition by strictly following a compositional model. By the turn of the twentieth century, the sight and sound of a little brass band of uniformed evangelists on street corners declaring war on sin became ubiquitous in American cities. Although Salvationists came to hold a cherished place in society, Americans greeted their initial invasion with contempt. They came with a message of transformative redemption for the poor and disenfranchised, loudly declaring that anyone and anything could be made holy and fit for God’s Salvation Army. John Psathas is the one of the most forefront, living New Zealand composers and is considered to be one of the three most important living composers of the Greek Diaspora. His music is performed across the globe, most notably as the opening and closing ceremony music for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. His percussion music has been championed by percussionists for three decades, starting with Dame Evelyn Glennie with the work Matre’s Dance. Synesthesia is a neurological condition characterized by over-abundant neural connectivity between commonly highly specialized areas of the brain. The developmental form of the condition often results in automatic and consistent cross-sensory associations between perceived stimuli and commonly unrelated brain regions. This research contemplates the specific form of music notation-to-color synesthesia and its impact on early stages of music education. Synesthetes with this mode of the condition tend to involuntarily yet consistently associate music-notational concepts with colors, thus rendering their assimilation of these concepts unique and individualized. Adverse childhood experiences are considered a serious public health problem and can lead to complex trauma. Due to the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences in the general population, it is likely music therapists frequently treat clients who have experienced trauma; however, there appears to be no published research on music therapy training and education regarding validated trauma-informed approaches. This study examined the impact of a three-hour educational training on music therapists’ knowledge of trauma-informed care and perceptions of preparedness to practice trauma-informed music therapy. These two essays address different issues regarding Lieder. Chapter 1 discusses moon topoi and traces the development of these topics from “naïve” in Gluck’s works to “sentimental” in the songs of Fanny Hensel, based on the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Schiller. Chapter 2 focuses on specific translation theory, drawing on work from Mona Baker and Zhang Qun-Xing, arguing that one cannot compare two song settings of different translations of the same poem, since the translator’s bias is inserted into the poetry, thereby changing the meaning of each song.
