Othar Turner held the Fife and Drum Blues traditions of North Mississippi for decades. Since his passing in 2003, his granddaughter Sharde Thomas has taken over as the keeper of these traditions. The musical characteristics of Othar are still present in Sharde’s music today, however her interpretations have shaped these current traditions. This research discusses heritage and folklore theories of scholars Rodney Harrison, Martha Sims, and Martine Stephens as a lens to evaluate Sharde’s musical interpretations and compares them to Othar’s last recordings before his passing. The purpose of this document is to articulate the various dimensions of the solo multiple percussion performance practice, the primary objective being to construct appropriate graduate curricula. It was found that the necessary skills and concepts could be categorized into four dimensions that make up the multi-faceted model: (1) equipment and setup, (2) notational style, (3) technical demands, and (4) conceptual performance. Requisite skills were posited from performance analyses of over fifty solo works that range from intermediate to advanced difficulty. I spent the summers of 2017 and 2019 traveling to different cities in Slovakia, and since my own heritage is Slovak, I began thinking about the idea of "home." What makes a home a home? Where was home for me? Red Towers is divided into two sections. In the first section I tried to capture the feeling of excitement that comes with leaving home, exploring the unknown, and experiencing new things. This study aims to provide a repertoire guide of Chinese art songs for the pedagogical and research needs of musicians and scholars. Chinese art songs are derived from Western art songs. This work provides a valuable resource outside the scope of the standard art song repertoire. There are very limited studies with annotated lists of Chinese art song repertoire in English. Therefore, it is difficult for teachers to search for specific Chinese art songs to utilize with students who have different voice types and learning levels. This dissertation examines the preservation and adaptation of Korean-ness through musical performances in the Korean peninsula and in Hawai‘i during the early twentieth century, when Korea was a Japanese colony. Hawai‘i deserves special attention because the first and largest Korean diasporic communities in America were established in Hawai‘i during this period. More importantly, cultural environments in early twentieth-century Hawai‘i and Korea were similar in that both featured diverse music cultures of different ethnic origins and new cultural infrastructures under the influence of imperialism. This dissertation is a textual analysis of Tori Amos as a feminist artist. Because Amos has had a successful and enduring career, she presents a unique opportunity to explore the ways third-wave feminism has influenced popular culture and vice-versa. This dissertation utilizes both a feminist and cultural studies lens to understand Amos, her work, and her fan community as texts. The purpose of this action research study was to discover whether students' experience with folk music from other countries influenced their preference for other unfamiliar music genres. Third grade students were assigned to one of two groups. Students in Group A participated in four weeks of lessons centering on folk music from Ghana, Japan, Israel, and Mexico. Students in Group B participated in four weeks of lessons centering solely on American folk music. The problem addressed in this project study was that principals have been inconsistently applying instructional leadership to support music teachers to remain in the teaching profession. The purpose of this basic qualitative research design study was to understand how principals applied instructional leadership practices to support music teachers in order to retain them. This paper describes strategies for integrating live performers with complex “extra-musical” sounds and environments through extended traditional and proportional notations. The subjects of the works discussed include Animals (wardang [2019], kurui [2018]) and environments (rising water [2018], willsons downfall [2018], njookenbooro [2018]) . The techniques include spectrographic transcription, audio processing, extended forms of notation and spatial audio.

On March 5, 2020, soprano Taylor Dengler and pianist Dr. Korey Barrett presented a recital of song literature in Davis Hall at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The first half of the program comprised three sets of Italian music. It opened with Ilia’s aria, “Zeffiretti lusinghieri” from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756 - 1791), Idomeneo, and was followed by two song sets by Gaetano Donizetti and Giacomo Puccini. The solo piano sonatas (Op. 1, 3, and 4) of once eminent English pianist/composer Cipriani Potter (1792-1871) are a collection of works that have for the most part fallen into obscurity. Potter produced three such sonatas in his lifetime, each at approximately the same time during his educational trip to Vienna between 1817 and 1818. Potter was much celebrated in his own time as a virtuoso pianist, teacher, and eventual principal at the Royal Academy of Music, and as an editor of the works of Mozart and Beethoven amongst others. This study reconsiders declamation in Schubert lieder performance in light of emerging historical evidence. Johann Michael Vogl’s reputedly declamatory approach has arguably been captured in surviving Diabelli editions that document his rhetorically motivated alterations and ornamentations. Similarly, Gustav Anton von Seckendorff has detailed song-like spoken declamation that manipulates pitch, rhythm and accentuation. Recordings of five modern German speakers were transcribed, analysed and used to model effective declamation in the recitation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poems ‘Erster Verlust’ and ‘Geistes Gruß.’ PRAAT speech analysis software was used to analyse the recordings. Preparing teachers for the realities of the profession is an ongoing concern for teacher education providers. In a climate where the future of teaching is largely unknown and the issues to be faced by teachers throughout their career largely imagined, the ability to identify and solve problems becomes increasingly important. This paper documents an evaluation of a pilot approach to preparing pre-service teachers for the realities of their profession. This approach, which centred on students utilising mobile technologies to problem-seek, was evaluated in terms of students’ perceived preparedness for the profession and their development of problem-solving skills and strategies. งานวิจัยเรื่องกรรมวิธีการสร้างกระจับปี่ของช่างศุภาพล ไทรวิมาน มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากรรมวิธีการสร้างกระจับปี่ และการประเมินคุณภาพกระจับปี่ของช่างศุภาพล ไทรวิมาน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ช่างศุภาพล ไทรวิมาน ศึกษางานช่างสร้างเครื่องดนตรีกับบิดา ซึ่งเคยเป็นช่างสร้างเครื่องดนตรีคนสำคัญของร้านดุริยบรรณ และเรียนรู้ซึมซับวิชาความรู้ด้านงานช่างจากการเป็นช่างในโรงงานของบิดา จนมีความรู้ความสามารถที่โดดเด่นในการสร้างจะเข้ ต่อมาภายหลังได้ทดลองสร้างกระจับปี่ โดยใช้กระจับปี่ของช่างจรูญ คชแสง เป็นต้นแบบ แต่ได้ดัดแปลงแก้ไขตามแนวทางของตนจนเกิดเป็นอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะ โดยการสร้างหลักแบบไม่ใช้หย่องและไม่เจาะรูหน้ากะโหลก ซึ่งมีขั้นตอนใน การสร้างทั้งหมด 8 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ การสร้างคันทวน การสร้างกะโหลก การสร้างโขน การสร้างลูกบิด การสร้างหลัก การสร้างนมและซุ้ม การเคลือบผิวไม้และย้อมสีชิ้นงาน และการประกอบและ เทียบเสียง ทั้งนี้คุณภาพของชิ้นงานมีความละเอียด เรียบร้อยสวยงาม ได้มาตรฐาน และมีคุณภาพเสียงที่ดังกังวาน มีเสียงที่ทุ้มลึก และมีลักษณะเสียงที่สั่นสะเทือน ตรงตามคุณลักษณะเสียงที่ไพเราะของกระจับปี่

งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเพลงมอญบ้านจรรย์นาฏย์ และศึกษาเอกลักษณ์ของเพลงมอญบ้านจรรย์นาฏย์ ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ตระกูลจรรย์นาฏย์นับทายาทได้ 3 รุ่น 1. ครูเพชร จรรย์นาฏย์ 2. ครูไพฑูรย์ จรรย์นาฏย์ 3. ครูพิทักษ์ จรรย์นาฏย์ เป็นการสืบทอดจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นภายในสำนักและสู่สังคมดนตรีไทยโดยกว้างโดยวิธีการถ่ายทอดแบบมุขปาฐะ วงปี่พาทย์มอญเกิดขึ้นโดยครูไพฑูรย์ จรรย์นาฏย์ เครื่องมอญชุดแรกที่สร้างคือ ฆ้องมอญจากร้านตุ๊กตาไทย ครูไพฑูรย์ จรรย์นาฏย์ เป็นผู้ประพันธ์เพลงมอญมีทั้งหมด 7 เพลง ได้แก่ เพลงมอญมอบเรือ เพลงสองกุมาร เพลงเขมรยวน เพลงพม่ารำขวาน เพลงม่านมงคล เพลงเร็วดาวกระจาย และ เพลงเร็วมะลิวัลย์ เอกลักษณ์ของเพลงมอญบ้านจรรย์นาฏย์ พบว่ามีรูปแบบโครงสร้างคล้ายเพลงเถา อนึ่งพบการประพันธ์หน้าทับตะโพนมอญที่ไว้ใช้สำหรับเพลงเขมรยวนโดยเฉพาะ พบบันไดเสียงทั้งหมด 4 บันไดเสียงคือ บันไดเสียงเพียงออบน กลาง ชวา และเพียงออล่าง

งานวิจัยเรื่องบทบาทการส่งเสริมดนตรีไทยของพลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติชีวิตของพลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค และบทบาทการส่งเสริมดนตรีไทยของพลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค ผลการศึกษาพบว่า พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค เกิดในครอบครัวที่ชื่นชอบดนตรีไทย ทำให้เกิดความสนใจการขับร้องเพลงไทย โดยยึดทางเพลงตามคุณหญิงไพฑูรย์ กิตติวรรณ มีลีลาการขับร้องตามครูเหนี่ยว ดุริยพันธุ์ การขับร้องเพลงไทยได้ไพเราะประกอบกับมีความสามารถในการขับเสภาทำให้พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค ได้รับคัดเลือกให้เป็นผู้ขับเสภาประกอบละครทางสถานีวิทยุโทรทัศน์กองทัพบกช่อง 7 และเป็นนักร้องเพลงไทยในงานสำคัญต่าง ๆ พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค รับราชการทหาร เหล่าทหารสื่อสาร จึงทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ประกาศข่าวในโอกาสสำคัญทางสถานีวิทยุโทรทัศน์กองทัพบกช่อง 5 ประกอบกับการเป็นนักแสดง และนักร้องเพลงไทย จึงทำให้ พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาค มีชื่อเสียงเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง เมื่อให้การสนับสนุนส่งเสริมดนตรีไทยจึงมีผู้ให้ความสนใจทั้งการสมัครเป็นลูกศิษย์และติดตามผลงาน พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาคมีบทบาทในการส่งเสริมดนตรีไทยทั้งการเผยแพร่การขับร้องเพลงไทย การตีกรับขับเสภา ผ่านสื่อทางวิทยุโทรทัศน์ สื่อออนไลน์ และเป็นผู้ประสานงานจัดงานดนตรีไทยในโอกาสสำคัญ นอกจากนั้น พลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาคยังมีบทบาทในการสืบทอดดนตรีไทยทั้งในฐานะครูผู้ถ่ายทอดความรู้ขั้นพื้นฐานด้านการขับร้องเพลงไทย และการตีกรับขับเสภาให้กับลูกศิษย์ รวมทั้งการถ่ายทอดกรรมวิธีการสร้างกรับเสภา นอกจากนั้นพลตรีประพาศ ศกุนตนาคยังร่วมจัดตั้ง “สำนักสยามเสภานุรักษ์” ซึ่งเป็นอีกหนึ่งช่องทางในการส่งเสริมการขับร้องเพลงไทย และการตีกรับขับเสภา ทางสื่อออนไลน์

วงสะล้อ ซอ ปิน ของแม่ครูลำดวน สุวรรณภูคำ คณะช่อแก้ว จังหวัดแพร่ ใช้ระเบียบการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติชีวิต วิธีการบรรเลงวงสะล้อ ซอ ปิน ทำนองซอ และทำนองดนตรีของแม่ครูลำดวน สุวรรณภูคำ โดยเก็บข้อมูลภาคสนามระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2562-2563 ประวัติชีวิตแม่ครูลำดวน สุวรรณภูคำ ท่านเป็นศิลปินพื้นบ้านล้านนาด้านการขับซอล่องน่าน และเป็นหัวหน้าคณะช่อแก้ว แม่ครูสั่งสมประสบการณ์ด้านการขับซอและการฟ้อนแง้นมาร่วม 50 ปี มีชื่อเสียงและได้รับความนิยมในจังหวัดแพร่และจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ศึกษาเพลงพื้นบ้านจากพ่อครูเมืองดี เทพประสิทธิ์ โดยเริ่มจากการยกขันตั้งขอเป็นศิษย์ การเข้าพิธีกินอ้อเพื่อฝากตัวเป็นศิษย์ ศึกษาหลักในการบรรเลงในแต่ละสถานการณ์ พิธีกรรม และพิธีการที่จะต้องปฏิบัติทุกครั้งในเวลาไปออกงานแสดงอย่างเคร่งครัด วิธีการบรรเลงของปิน มีการบรรเลงคู่ 2 และคู่ 4 เป็นส่วนมาก โดยปินมีการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษคือกลวิธีการสะบัด สะล้อพบว่ามีการใช้คู่เสียงทุกคู่เสียงในเพลงรูปแบบดำเนินทำนองและมีการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษได้แก่ การพรมนิ้ว การขยี้ และการสะบัด การบรรจุคำเพลงในแบบของแม่ครูลำดวน สุวรรณภูคำ โดยส่วนมากมักจะบรรจุ 2 คำ ต่อ 1 ห้อง เว้นแต่สถานการณ์ในการด้นสดที่จำเป็นจะต้องใช้คำหลายคำก็จะเป็นกรณีพิเศษ การเน้นคำจะเน้นตามสำเนียงภาษาของภาคเหนือ ตัวที่เน้นมักจะอยู่ในจังหวะที่ตรงกับลูกตกของแต่ละห้อง ในบางจุดที่ต้องการเน้นเป็นพิเศษจะใส่กลวิธีพิเศษการซ้อนเสียงเข้าไป การใช้กลวิธีพิเศษของการขับซอนิยมใช้การเอื้อนมีใน 2 กรณี คือ ใช้ในคำที่มีการใช้วรรณยุกต์ไม้ตรีและไม้จัตวาและใช้เพื่อเชื่อมคำระหว่างห้อง นอกจากนี้มักจะใช้ในเพลงรูปแบบดำเนินทำนองมากกว่าเพลงบังคับทาง ทำนองดนตรีพบว่าใช้กลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูลของเพลงดาดน่าน เพลงลับแลง เพลงพม่าต๊ะโต๋งเต๋ง เพลงดาดแพร่ และเพลงจะปุเชียงกลาง มีจำนวน 3 กลุ่มเสียงได้แก่ กลุ่มเสียงทางเพียงออบน ชวา และกลางแหบ

การแสดงเดี่ยวคลาริเน็ตในครั้งนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับบทเพลงที่ใช้ในการแสดงคลาริเน็ต ประกอบด้วยประวัติผู้ประพันธ์เพลง ด้านเทคนิคการประพันธ์และแรงบันดาลใจในการประพันธ์เพลง การตีความบทเพลง เปรียบเทียบการตีความบทเพลงของนักแสดงคลาริเน็ตแต่ละคน ศึกษาแนวคิดวิธีการบรรเลง และวิเคราะห์บทเพลงเพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ในการฝึกซ้อม การเตรียมความพร้อมและการจัดการแสดง การแสดงเดี่ยวคลาริเน็ตในครั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกบทเพลงมาด้วยกันทั้งหมด 4 บทเพลง โดยเป็นบทเพลงที่ทรงคุณค่าจากนักประพันธ์ที่มีชื่อเสียงในแต่ละยุคสมัย รวมทั้งสิ้น 3 ยุค ดังนี้(1) Clarinet Sonata in E-Flat Major, Op.120 No.2 ผลงานการประพันธ์ของ Johannes Brahms (2) Premiere Rhapsody ผลงานการประพันธ์ของ Claude Debussy (3) Hommage a Manuel de Falla ผลงานการประพันธ์ของ Bela Kovacs และ (4) Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra Arranged for Clarinet and Piano By Composer ผลงานการประพันธ์ของ Aaron Copland การแสดงเดี่ยวคลาริเน็ตครั้งนี้ได้จัดการแสดงในวันที่ 7 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2564 เวลา 18.00 น. ในรูปแบบออนไลน์ รวมเวลาที่ใช้ในการแสดงทั้งหมดประมาณ 1 ชั่วโมง

การศึกษาวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาแนวคิดและคุณค่าทางเดี่ยวซอสามสายเพลงทยอยเดี่ยวของพระยาภูมีเสวิน (จิตร จิตตเสวี) และศึกษาการประดิษฐ์ทางเดี่ยวซอสามสายเพลงทยอยเดี่ยวของพระยาภูมีเสวิน (จิตร จิตตเสวี) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า แนวคิดที่ปรากฏในทางเดี่ยวซอสามสายเพลงทยอยเดี่ยวของพระยาภูมีเสวิน (จิตร จิตตเสวี) ประกอบด้วย 5 แนวคิด ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องเพลงเดี่ยวขั้นสูง แนวคิดความเชื่อเรื่องการสาปแช่ง แนวคิดเรื่องการสืบทอด แนวคิดเรื่องพิธีกรรมการถ่ายทอด และแนวคิดเรื่องการบรรเลง มีคุณค่าใน 4 ประการ คือ คุณค่าต่อตัวผู้รับการถ่ายทอด คุณค่าต่อตัวผู้ถ่ายทอด คุณค่าต่อสำนักซอสามสายพระยาภูมีเสวิน (จิตร จิตเสวี) และคุณค่าต่อสังคม การประดิษฐ์ทางเดี่ยวซอสามสายเพลงทยอยเดี่ยว พบว่าซอสามสายมีความเหมาะสมในการบรรเลงเพลงทยอยเดี่ยว 3 ประการคือ การทำเสียงได้ยาวไม่ขาดกัน ความกว้างของช่วงเสียง และนิ้วโอดลอย มีการวางโครงสร้างทางเดี่ยวซอสามสายเพลงทยอยเดี่ยวออกเป็น 8 ส่วน ได้แก่ ต้นทยอยเดี่ยว เที่ยวหวาน สามชั้น เที่ยวเก็บ สามชั้น เที่ยวหวาน สองชั้น เที่ยวเก็บ สองชั้น เที่ยวหวาน ชั้นเดียว เที่ยวเก็บ ชั้นเดียว และปลายทยอยเดี่ยว มีการใช้จังหวะฉิ่งและจังหวะหน้าทับสองไม้ ในอัตราจังหวะสามชั้นและอัตราจังหวะสองชั้นตีกำกับ มีการใช้กลุ่มทำนองโยน 4 เสียงคือ กลุ่มทำนองโยนลงเสียงเร กลุ่มทำนองโยนลงเสียงมี กลุ่มทำนองโยนลงเสียงซอล และกลุ่มทำนองโยนลงเสียงลา การขึ้นเพลงและการลงจบเพลงมีลักษณะอ่อนหวาน นอกจากนี้ยังมีการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษ 2 ลักษณะคือ กลวิธีพิเศษในการใช้นิ้ว จำนวน 11 กลวิธี ได้แก่ นิ้วประ นิ้วพรม นิ้วแอ้ นิ้วนาคสะดุ้ง นิ้วก้อง นิ้วชุน นิ้วควง นิ้วครั่น นิ้วชั่ง นิ้วสะบัด และนิ้วรูด มีกลวิธีพิเศษในการใช้คันชัก จำนวน 3 กลวิธี ได้แก่ คันชักจับกระตั้วแทงกระตั้ว คันชักงูเลื้อย และการชะงักซอ

กรรมวิธีการสร้างผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่ของช่างเกรียงศักดิ์ เริงศิริ, วรัตถ์ พงษ์เกลี้ยง

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง “กรรมวิธีการสร้างผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่ของช่างเกรียงศักดิ์ เริงศิริ” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติชีวิตและกรรมวิธีการสร้างผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่ และเพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพเสียงผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่ของช่างเกรียงศักดิ์ เริงศิริ ผลการวิจัยพบว่าช่างเกรียงศักดิ์ เริงศิริ ศึกษาการเหลาผืนระนาดจากช่างช่อ วุฒิราชา ประกอบกับการสังเกตผลงานของช่างหลาย ๆ ท่าน ปัจจุบันประกอบอาชีพช่างเหลาผืนระนาดควบคู่กับการทำเกษตรกรรม จากการศึกษากรรมวิธีการสร้างผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่ของช่างเกรียงศักดิ์ เริงศิริ พบว่ามีขั้นตอนทั้งหมด 17 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ การคัดเลือกไม้ไผ่ การแบ่งปล้องไม้ไผ่ การผ่าไม้ไผ่ การแช่ไม้ไผ่ การผึ่งไม้ไผ่ การจำแนกไม้ตามขนาด การจับผืน การปรับข้าง การทาบกระสวนตีเส้น การตีเส้นเตรียมเจาะรู การตอกตะปูเตรียมเจาะรู การตัดหัวท้าย การเจาะรูร้อยเชือก การแต่งหัวท้ายใต้ท้องและตีเส้นเตรียมปาดท้อง การติดตะกั่ว การปาดท้องเทียบเสียงและขัด และการลงสี ขัดและลงแว็กซ์ โดยแต่ละขั้นตอนต้องอาศัยความพิถีพิถันประกอบกับประสบการณ์ทางเชิงช่าง ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพเสียงของผืนระนาดเอกไม้ไผ่
