Folklife Archives Finding Aids

Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1273. Student paper titled “Negro Gospel Music at Barnes Chapel Methodist Church” in which Karen Stewart describes a singular all-day “singing” held at the church in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, in February 1971. Stewart offers a brief description of her fieldwork methods including research and recording and provides an abbreviated background on each of her musical informants. Stewart also recounts the songs that were sung and notes recurrent themes throughout the music. The paper also includes the words to each hymn, a black and white photograph of the performers, and two reel-to-reel audiotapes.

Ensemble Performances

About the Ensembles:

The ODU Collegium Musicum is a unique ensemble that brings together students and members of the community to study and perform early music from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. A variety of instruments are used, including recorders, crumhorns, viols and guitars. The ensemble recently acquired a consort of Renaissance recorders handmade by Thomas Prescott. The ensemble gives concerts on campus each semester and performs else-where in the Hampton Roads region. In addition, the Colleguim Musicum per-forms at the annual Department of Music Madrigal Banquet.

Social Identity And The Music Making Choices Of Black/African American Youth From Limited Resource Communities, Natasha A. Thomas

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation explores how Black/African American youth from limited resource communities described and demonstrated their social identities through their music-making choices in the therapeutic relationship with a board certified music therapist who was also a Black/African American person regarded as a participant in the study. A review of literature regarding social psychology and identity theory, as well as culturally relevant pedagogy and participatory action research (PAR), which form the foundation of this study’s methodology, is included. Findings include that participants placed a high degree of importance on their social status as authorities on their chosen identifying groups, and consistently reinforced …
