Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

One of the pinnacles of performance practice is that of creating a recognizable, individualistic sound. There are differing opinions on this matter in relation to how a trumpet sound is formed and changed through both player technique and equipment setup. The purpose of this study is to take an objective point of view on the matter, using what others have said as well as the science of sound production on the trumpet, to find a window in to how players use technique and equipment to their advantage in creating the sound they desire.

Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship

This project aims to explore the relationship between French airs de cour and English ayres (or airs) in the early 17th century. Although the first collection of airs de cour was published in 1571 by Adrian LeRoy, airs de cour were most popular was in the 17th century during the reign of Louis the XIII, with composers the Pierre Guédron, Antoine Boësset and Etienne Moulinié. The popularity of the English ayre began with John Dowland’s publication First Booke of Songes or Ayres in 1597 and continued with composers such as Thomas Campion and John Danyel. This study was conducted to focus on the use of music therapy as a treatment to serve people of special needs, including individuals with ASD. The research seeks to inform parents/students of children with ASD that music therapy could be the avenue in which their children/students are treated in certain areas. The information in this research can assist parents with the knowledge and understanding they need relating to music therapy in order for their child to overcome weaknesses associated with ASD. Music is a powerful influence in life. We hear music at work, in the car, at the mall, and in our homes. Music has also been found to have an affect during physical activity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music on physical activity rates, via pedometers, of college-aged students in basketball class. For this study 106 college-aged students participated in this study. Two classes played basketball with no music playing during game play. Two other classes played basketball with music playing during game play. It was found that the two classes that played basketball …
