This document is a supplement to "Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of Will Marion Cook," a 2017 document which is mounted on-line at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/musicfacpub/66/. It draws out of that resource some material on five themes or threads that are constant elements over Cook's career, concerning the history of African American music and dance, and the promotion of schools and professional troupes for African American musicians and actors. The Cycle of 6ths is a chord progression that I first heard about from the Jazz guitarist Ted Greene, who was a skilled music theorist and had two books published on guitar harmony and chord progressions. American protest music has been a prominent and acknowledged art form since the 1930’s and has affected many artists both positively and negatively. I aim to examine what about protest music and society’s consumption of it has changed, for better or worse, over the course of its existence. Dementia currently affects over 35 million people worldwide – a number that is expected to triple by the year 2050 according to the report, “Dementia: a public health priority” by World Health Organization and Alzheimer’s Disease International. Despite the high population of people with dementia, there are currently no cures for the diseases within this category. The aim of this article is to explore the cognitive effects of incorporating music into daily life prior to the onset of dementia and determining whether or not these effects have an impact on age-related cognitive decline. Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Music Educators find themselves ill prepared and overwhelmed during their first years of teaching for a number of reasons. Due in part to this issue, less priority is placed on string bass education for pre-service teachers. The implications this are a consistent neglect of string bass players and instruments from emerging teachers resulting in loss of students and inventory. Originally noticed in Denver Public Schools, this article will seek to identify this problem as systemic, provide scope, and offer solutions toward correcting it.

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is a genre of music that has enjoyed success. Although it grew out of art music in the twentieth century, EDM is considered popular music. But, is the future of EDM confined only within popular music or is there potential for it to influence or become art music? The concept of meter in music has changed throughout the centuries and many related terms and concepts (such as bar, time signature, tactus and prolatio) have either emerged or disappeared from the vocabulary of the professional musician according to the mindset of each period. Consequently, the understanding of metric organization in Renaissance music by modern musicians is compromised, and so are modern editions of said repertoire, which are based in modern music notation. In informed editions, the decisions regarding the use of bar lines, if one is to avoid arbitrariness, should reflect a concern for conveying a metric idea …
