This document will focus on a select number of etudes from the first half of “24 Etudes and Caprices, Opus 35,” by Jakob Dont. My project is on the modern Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt and his work Spiegel im Spiegel. Of all the pieces written by Pärt, this is one of his most popular and revered works. It has a major emotional impact on many people who listen to it, but also on me. Through my research, I have discovered compositional techniques which help the work achieve such a profound effect on a listener.

This thesis interrogates the marketing strategies of the Oxford, Mississippi-based record label Fat Possum, which was founded in the early 1990s by Matthew Johnson with the goal of recording obscure hill country blues artists. Fat Possum gained recognition for its raw-sounding recordings of bluesmen, including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and T-Model Ford, as well as its irreverent marketing techniques. Adopting the tagline “not the same old blues crap,” Fat Possum asserted that its blues were both different from and superior to all other blues music. My Fleeting Angel is a piece for a piano trio composed by Cheryl Frances-Hoad. It is inspired by The Wishing Box, a short story by Sylvia Plath.

Dr. Frances-Hoad wrote the piece in 2005. It won the Robert Helps Prize, earning her temporary status as composer-in-residence at the University of Southern Florida.

The vivid descriptions in The Wishing Box provided musical inspiration for My Fleeting Angel. Dr. Frances-Hoad transformed the colorful syntax into harmonies and rhythms throughout the piece.

Prior research studies point to a correlational relationship between music instruction and academic achievement studies, but varying results and confounding factors prevent causality. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study is to test Vygotsky's sociocultural cognitive theory that playing a musical instrument is significantly associated with academic achievement in reading for 1st graders who attend 1 of 2 schools in Alaska. Using Analysis of Covariance, this study investigates the relationship between instrumental music and academic achievement on measures of academic progress (MAP) reading scores of 1st graders (n = 76) who received at least 90 minutes per week of string instruction …

My Eyes Due See is a multidimensional examination of the “black experience” in America. The installation is composed of a single-channel video, a music composition that utilizes music samples and live instrumentation, and sculptures made up of car parts and broomsedge grass. Each of these elements arranged in space share a nuanced and complicated view of blackness through the lens of a black man decoding personal history and American history simultaneously. Autonomy is the overarching theme throughout the work as it pertains to race, identity, urban and rural environments, and the relationship between generational trauma and nostalgia.

Correlations between music training and psychosocial skills, sensory abilities, and aspects of intelligence, are sorted into primary or secondary effects. Correlations between these areas of human development and music training lack support pertaining to the underlying cognitive networks that these processes rely on. Thus, this study was based on the work of Baddeley and Hitch's model of working memory, and implemented a test of parallel processing (Articulatory Suppression Task, AST), which measures proficiency of working memory systems. The aim of this investigation was to determine the perceptions of high school choral students taught by the researcher in the Inland Northwest of the USA on their use of technology in their independent choral practice habits. This document seeks to find common ground between the seemingly disparate worlds of classical music and experimental music in pursuit of revealing the usefulness of experimental music practice for musicians trained in the classical tradition. In seeming contrast to classical music, experimental music values include process, indeterminacy, and non-subjectivity. This project investigates the development and reception of the Kingma System flute, designed by Dutch flutemaker Eva Kingma. For some time now, flutists have been honing creative techniques to provide imperfect approximations of what composers have specified, but the Kingma mechanism achieves the exact effects desired with ease. งานวิจัยเรื่องการถ่ายทอดดนตรีไทยของครูสำรวย เปรมใจ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติและผลงานของครูสำรวย เปรมใจ กระบวนการถ่ายทอดความรู้ด้านดนตรีไทยของครูสำรวย เปรมใจ และบทบาทการสืบทอดดนตรีไทยของครูสำรวย เปรมใจ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ครูสำรวย เปรมใจได้รับการถ่ายทอดความรู้การเล่นดนตรีไทย การผลิตและการซ่อมแซมเครื่องดนตรีไทยจากบิดาคือ ครูปลั่ง เปรมใจ และได้เรียนดนตรีกับครูผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านดนตรีไทยอีกหลายท่านจนมีความรู้ความสามารถ ต่อมาเป็นเจ้าของวงดนตรีไทย และเปิดบ้านสอนดนตรีไทย "บ้านเปรมใจ" เป็นวิทยาทานโดยไม่มีค่าใช้จ่าย ส่งผลทำให้สภาวัฒนธรรมเขตบางซื่อ กรุงเทพมหานคร ยกย่องให้ครูสำรวย เปรมใจ เป็นบุคคลดีเด่นของสภาวัฒนธรรมเขตบางซื่อ และบ้านเปรมใจได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็นแหล่งวัฒนธรรมด้านศิลปะการแสดงในเขตบางซื่อ ผู้ผ่านการศึกษาตามหลักสูตรการเรียนการสอนจะได้รับวุฒิบัตรจากสภาวัฒนธรรมเขตบางซื่อ ส่งผลทำให้การถ่ายทอดความรู้ดนตรีไทยของบ้านเปรมใจมีแบบแผนขั้นตอนในการถ่ายทอด ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นไปตามขนบการถ่ายทอดดนตรีไทยนับตั้งแต่การครอบครู วิธีการบรรเลง รวมถึงลำดับเพลงในการถ่ายทอด โดยมีการพัฒนาวิธีการถ่ายทอดความรู้เป็นแบบฉบับของตนเองเรียกว่าดนตรี 3 ภาษา คือ ภาษามือ ภาษาโน้ต ภาษาเสียง ชื่อเสียงจากการสอนดนตรี การผลิตเครื่องดนตรีและซ่อมแซมเครื่องดนตรีทำให้ครูสำรวย เปรมใจมีบทบาทในการเผยแพร่ดนตรีไทยทั้งในการนำวงดนตรีไทยไปบรรเลงและการประชาสัมพันธ์แนะนำดนตรีไทย

งานวิจัยเรื่อง การสืบทอดดนตรีไทยของเจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษาชีวประวัติและผลงาน การถ่ายทอดดนตรีไทย และสายการสืบทอดดนตรีไทยของ เจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า เจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) เกิดในตระกูลเจ้านายฝ่ายเหนือ เมื่อเยาว์วัยได้ตามเสด็จฯ พระราชชายา เจ้าดารารัศมี ไปพำนัก ณ วังสวนสุนันทา กรุงเทพมหานคร ทำให้ได้เรียนจะเข้กับครูสังวาลย์ กุลวัลกี ผู้มีชื่อเสียงและมีฝีมือความสามารถในการบรรเลงจะเข้ นอกจากการเรียนจะเข้แล้ว เจ้าโสภายังเรียนซอเพิ่มเติมกับ ครูเจริญ พาทยโกศล เรียนขับร้องเพิ่มเติมกับคุณหญิงไพฑูรย์ กิตติวรรณ และขุนเสียงเสนาะกรรณ (พัน มุกตวาภัย) เมื่อกลับมาเชียงใหม่ เจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) สอนดนตรีไทยให้กับสถาบันต่าง ๆ โดยมีผลงานด้านการแผยแพร่ดนตรีและการแสดง ผลงานด้านวิชาการ และผลงานด้านการควบคุมการบรรเลงและการแสดง การถ่ายทอดดนตรีไทยพบว่า เจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) ได้ถ่ายทอดความรู้ด้านพื้นฐานดนตรีไทยและการบรรเลงเครื่องสาย ภายในระบบการศึกษาและภายนอกระบบการศึกษา โดยให้ความสำคัญกับพื้นฐานดนตรีไทยและการบรรเลงดนตรีไทยตามขนบ คือ การไหว้ครู บุคลิกการบรรเลง รวมถึงข้อคิดสอนใจในการเป็นนักดนตรี แต่เนื่องจากเจ้าโสภาถ่ายทอดดนตรีไทยภายในและภายนอกระบบการศึกษา ที่มีการเรียนการสอนดนตรีไทยเป็นเพียงรายวิชาพื้นฐานและมีผู้ที่สนใจในจำนวนน้อย มิได้ถ่ายทอดให้กับศิลปินอาชีพหรือสถาบันที่มีการเรียนการสอนดนตรีไทยโดยตรง ทำให้สายการสืบทอดดนตรีไทยของเจ้าโสภา เพ็งพุ่ม (ณ เชียงใหม่) ไม่แพร่หลาย

It is generally accepted that every violin has different tone quality in terms of intonation and the depth of the harmonics produced. The best violins are made by experienced luthiers that craft each with precision to produce the best possible tonal quality. The quality of the finished violin is dependent upon both the specific shape and the vibrational response of the wood used in its construction. In 1944, twenty-three-year-old Alfred Reed, staff arranger and copyist for the 529th Army Air Corps Band in Atlantic City, NJ, was invited to participate in a special concert in Denver, Colorado. There, a select group of musicians from several of the leading wind bands from across the country planned to premiere works by both American and Russian composers with the goal of strengthening relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. This thesis seeks to explore the idea of effective practice as being meditative in nature. Effective practice and meditation are both viewed independently, and elements of both are discussed. Meditation, in the literature, is viewed in different lights and is defined in many ways. This makes it difficult to nail down a single definition of meditation. The process itself is debated and several different categorizations are offered. Some research shows Unwanted Effects (UE) to meditation, but these concerns are not widespread.
