Though present-day American society generally assumes opera is one of the few remaining entertainment fields where talent matters more than physical appearance, as the 2004 firing of Deborah Voigt demonstrates, present-day opera singers are increasingly being held to stricter image standards. In 2004, Covent Garden dismissed Voigt from their production of Ariadne auf Naxos, in which Voigt was supposed to reprise her critically acclaimed interpretation of the title role. According to Voigt, Covent Garden's casting director Peter Katona felt that she was too large to fit into the black dress the new production required of the character. Voigt's removal …

Dynamic Aspects Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern

Auditory imagery can represent many aspects of music, such as the starting pitches of a tune or the instrument that typically plays it. In this paper, I concentrate on more dynamic, or time-sensitive aspects of musical imagery, as demonstrated in two recently published studies. The first was a behavioral study that examined the ability to make emotional judgments about both heard and imagined music in real time. The second was a neuroimaging study on the neural correlates of anticipating an upcoming tune, after hearing a cue tune. That study found activation of several sequence-learning brain areas, some of which varied …

In today’s globalized market, Asian films are being increasingly exported; often,

multilingual movies deal with more complex societal issues and catch the interest of

a foreign audience interested in having an open door, one might say multiple doors,

into another society. The nearly complete lack of a system enabling such an audience

to be made aware of the complex multilingual and multilingual characters in such

movies ends up providing a distorted and simplified view of Chinese, Taiwanese,

Hong Kong and Singaporean societies as reflected in its cinemas.

Utilizing the first eight measures of the Kyrie from Missa Primi Toni by Palestrina, Distant Cathedrals is a piece which connects the old with the new. The elegant voice-leading and careful regulation of dissonance in Palestrina’s panconsonant music is emblematic of late Renaissance polyphony. Given Palestrina’s position as one of Europe’s leading composers, late Renaissance counterpoint is often labeled Palestrina-style polyphony. This piece infuses the pureness of Palestrina with extended tertian and mixed-interval harmonies of the contemporary variety, while alternating and integrating Palestrina’s thematic material and Distant Cathedral’s original material. This article disputes some basic questions concerning the coordination of seventeenth century sacred music, approaching the phenomenon through a musical species of particular interest, though largely unstudied from a performance practice point of view. Roman polychorality with its specific performing conditions offers an illuminating perspective on principles of musical direction and interaction which differ significantly from our modern access path towards these topics. The conference entitled "The Neurosciences and Music-IV: Learning and Memory" was held at the University of Edinburgh from June 9-12, 2011, jointly hosted by the Mariani Foundation and the Institute for Music in Human and Social Development, and involving nearly 500 international delegates. This article considers the U.S. National Standards for Music Education through the lenses of Austin, Searle, Butler and Foucault in order to examine the single point of control and sovereignty of governing organizations and to situate the U.S. National Standards as speech acts; that is, written performatives that essentially describe and enact particular sets of responses. I extend those ways performativity has normally been considered and suggest that the standards not only function as speech acts but as an icon whose continual referencing creates ongoing acts that constitute a process in which what they suggest and their enactment are united. …
