Music Education Publications

This article considers questions related to educational practices taking in consideration three main concepts: Cultural capital, metodolatry, and salvation. These are taken both in especific terms as well as an metaphorical exercise for the exploration of pedagogical, policy and practice issues and concerns in music education in the United States. The article also makes reference and traces connections between subjects that may create a Pan-American mode of thinking; exorting a call for further, more prolific and greater scope in research and dialogue between North and South regions of the Americas.

This essay on graduate music education is in response to an article by David Hebert on challenges and solutions in online music teacher education that appeared in the online journal, Research and Issues in Music Education, 5(1). I found the article stimulating because so little has been written on the topic of music teacher education at the graduate level.

It appears that graduate music education in institutions of higher learning is locked into traditions that online programs are ready to challenge. In this essay I consider this challenge from a traditionalist viewpoint to determine if an online approach is a …

Expectation plays a vital role in understanding how we experience music. Processing music requires listeners to form expectations about upcoming events as they unfold. The formation and violation of these expectations has been empirically tested in harmonic priming paradigms, in harmonic priming during melodies, and in more general divided attention models. Recent research has also suggested that passive exposure to music leads to the development of implicit knowledge about musical expectations for untrained as well as trained listeners. Expectation has even been cited by the theorist Leonard Meyer as "the prime generator of musical affect" (qtd. in Margulis, 2005). Expectation …

A Comparison Of Mexican Children’S Music Compositions And Contextual Songs, Patricia E. Riley

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this research was to make observations and comparisons between original music composed by Mexican children, and traditional Mexican songs. Data were obtained through notated music compositions created by the children, and through videotaped interviews during which the children performed their compositions, talked about both their compositions and songs representative of their cultural context, and performed the songs. Subjects were 10 randomly selected fourth-grade children enrolled at the Julian Hinojosa School in Puebla, Mexico. Prior to composing, the children explored the instruments to be used, and the musical elements of pitch, duration, tempo, dynamics, and timbre. Results indicate …

The Missa Brevis displayed and discussed herein is composed for chamber choir, vocal soloists, and a chamber ensemble of nine instrumental performers. This setting of several sections of the Catholic Mass explores a narrative interpretation of that text, using a programmatic compositional approach, through which all parameters of music were systematically planned. The thesis is in two parts. Part One is an analysis of the composition, both in full and movement by movement, with regard to structure, harmonic contour, melodic design, timbral choices, and the compositional process required for its creation. The contents of the project are a reflection paper titled “A Musician's Evolution”, an album titled The N.O.C. Project” and two dvds. One is a documentary titled When Papa Lost the Pimps” and a music video titled Rancid Reality”. In the paper the author writes out the lyrics of eight songs, out of the sixteen songs in the album, in order for the reader to analyze them. Isang Yun was born in Duksan, in Korea, in 1917, and became one of the leading Korean composers in Germany in the twentieth-century. IsangYun’s Music is frequently performed throughout the world even after his death. His name as a composer was recognized as a mediator of East Asian and Western musical traditions. This thesis will discuss his involvement in political issues during the Japanese occupation in Korea in addition to the background of his controversial extreme penalty and the strong support he received from the North Korean government after his release. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a composition for alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, piano, acoustic bass, drum set, and string quartet.

The 1974 Robert M. Pirsig novel of the same name is the primary source of inspiration.for many aspects of its composition. Elements of plot, setting, theme, tone, form, and imagery of the novel are intended to be expressed, and in some cases, directly alluded to, through corresponding musical elements.

The accompanying analysis dissects the mechanics of the composition as it unfolds. Each chapter discusses a section of the composition by reducing it …

"Abstracts for the Mind" is a three-movement work for viola and orchestra and was written between the fall semester of 2007 and the spring semester of 2008. For this project, I composed the script and music for an original musical, After the Winter. The score is given, followed by an analysis of the piece. The main purpose of the analytical portion was not to make a value judgment about my own work, but to simply show how the music enhances the text and to reveal my tendencies and preferences as a composer. It does so by chronologically examining the form, harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation of each song. The purpose of this study was to learn if classical music stimuli can be used to enhance the thinking abilities of children as measured by a cognitive testing instrument. A comparison of classical music exposure and student achievement was conducted to specifically ascertain if music of varying types had an effect on measurable intelligences (especially spatial-temporal intelligence), as measured by the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). An exploration of the theoretical and empirical literature regarding the improvement of cognitive abilities of elementary school aged children was examined to identify if exposure to arts education produced measurable gains which could facilitate …
