Once the unruly upstart, John Zorn is now a MacArthur fellow, whose formidable catalog divides easily into early, middle, and late periods. The early period dates from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, when Zorn pioneered the practice of "comprovisation," a term used to describe "the making of new compositions from recordings of improvised material." Ultimately, Zorn's comprovisation blurs the lines between active listener and composer, since both create new works when they impose structure on found sonic material. His early structuralist-modernist approach to comprovisation produced esoteric, often severely pointillist music, and evolved into the game pieces of the late 1970s …

The recital was given in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance. It was presented in collaboration with pianist Kyung Lee, and contained art songs by Henry Purcell, Gustav Mahler, Ernest Chausson, and a cycle of spirituals by John Carter.

Benjamin Fox presented a graduate bassoon recital on 28 February 2008 at 8 P.M. in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa. Mr. Fox was assisted by Dr. Robin Guy on piano, Bonnie Alger on violin, Renee Rapier on viola, Rachel Stadler on cello, and Dr. Jean McDonald on voice. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Music degree in bassoon performance. The repertoire selected represents a variety of challenging pieces spanning a broad range of styles, instrumental groupings, and periods.

Breta Borstad and collaborative pianist Kirstin Dyer performed a recital for the degree of Master of Music in Flute Performance-on 13 March 2008. The repertoire consisted of the Sonata in G Major, Wq. 134, H. 548, by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach; the Suite for Flute and Piano, Op. 34, by Charles-Marie Widor; Le Merle Noir by Olivier Messiaen; and the Sonata in D Major, Op. 94, by Sergei Prokofiev. The purpose of this abstract is to provide historical background for the works, as well as stylistic and formal considerations.

Mark Bjorklund, tenor, presented his graduate voice recital on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 8:00 PM in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus. The recital was given in collaboration with pianist Kirstin Dyer and included selected works from Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Winter Words by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) and the entire set of Cinq Poemes de Baudelaire by Claude Debussy (1862-1918). This abstract discusses musical and historical features of the recital pieces.

A great deal of literature focuses on the subject of music and the brain and how music can affect learning. Music stimulates brain patterns, and therefore should be considered essential in an academic setting. This review was written to provide an analysis of the published literature and studies in the area of music and cognitive development, to examine how the brain is wired for music, and to determine whether music is an effective tool in enhancing environmental and cognitive learning conditions in classrooms.

“Late style” is a longstanding aesthetic category in all the arts. Late-style music is presumed to have certain internal qualities (such as fragmentation, intimacy, nostalgia, or concision) and to be associated with certain external factors (such as the age of the composer, his or her proximity to and foreknowledge of death, lateness within a historical period, or a sense of authorial belatedness with respect to significant predecessors). Upon closer inspection, it appears that many of these external factors are unreliably correlated with a musical style that might be described as late. The purposes of this study were: (1) to investigate the effects of peer teaching on students’ achievement in sight-reading at the piano, and (2) to determine whether peer teaching positively affected students’ attitude toward sight-reading at the piano. Participants were undergraduate music majors (N = 85) enrolled in the second or fourth semester of a four-semester group piano sequence. Participants completed a pretest and a posttest that consisted of a video-taped sight-reading performance and an attitudinal questionnaire. This dissertation is an arts-based qualitative study in Leadership and Change that describes the qualities of dialogue revealed through the felt experience of Native and non-Native American music composers engaged in a dialogue through music composition. The fifteen co-collaborators who participated in the study range in age from three-years-old to elders. The study is theoretically embedded within Performance Studies, Dr. Carolyn Kenny’s music therapy model Field of Play, and aesthetic philosophy. Methodologically, this work is expressed through performance ethnography and autoethnography and privileges textual and non-textual modes of account including photographs, video excerpts, poetry, and music manuscript.
