Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri}, For Symphony Orchestra, Eric Michael Akers

Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri} is presented as a programmatic work for symphony orchestra. The eight movements of the piece correspond with a different theme represented by various details of each particular film scene. Notably, the piece centers on a protagonist and antagonistic relationship that is characterized by the titles of the movements. This relationship can be examined by a closer study of excerpts from the piece. The “galactic” premier was held at the Keith Albee Theatre in Huntington, WV on April 13, 2007. The duration of the work is 5’55”.

Music education organizations achieved a huge success in Texas several years ago when legislation declared music as a part of the core curriculum. Similarly, more recent national education legislation like No Child Left Behind has recognized music as a core curricular subject. Since that time, little has been done to assess music students to ensure a set of basic skills and knowledge is being achieved. While national and state music standards exist, these standards, in many cases, are not mandatory and merely serve as a guide or recommendations for music educators to follow. A Study Of The Comparative Perceptions Of Non-Tenured And Tenured Music Teachers And Music Supervisors Regarding The Needs And Concerns Of The Teacher In Music Performance Education, Dale E. Johanson

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to elicit information through a survey from non-tenured and tenured music performance teachers and their music supervisors concerning their perceived needs and concerns at work. An instrument created for evaluation and assessment was constructed to yield twelve scale areas of needs and concerns. Comparison of responses provided results showing areas of congruence and disagreement among music performance teachers and supervisors.

Teachers placed teaching materials and resources as a high concern while supervisors expressed greatest concern in the area of music-related competence. In terms of assistance, non-tenured music teachers felt that mentor teachers, music conferences, …

This paper presents a comprehensive metric analysis of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, with particular emphasis on the issues of metric conflict. The analytic methodology is based on the work of Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, while the analytic notation used is based partly on that of Lerdahl and Jackendoff and partly on that of Jonathan Kramer, with some original modifications.

The paper discusses the factors generating metric conflict, along with its distribution, correlation with other structural parameters, and functional effects. The relationship between metric conflict and fluctuations in the depth of metric hierarchy is examined in detail. Some cases of metric …

For this project, the author uses Bakhtin's theory of carnival to illuminate Zappa's sound and rhetoric. The author hopes that by using this theoretical lens allows audiences to understand Zappa's choices in subject matter. Medievalism And Exoticism In The Music Of Dead Can Dance, Kirsten Yri

In 1991, the alternative rock band Dead Can Dance released an album that caught the attention of music reviewers by constructing an aural allegiance to the Middle Ages. Suitably called A Passage in Time, the album was described as imitating medieval chant, troubadour music, Latin hymns and courtly songs and included Dead Can Dance’s hybrid medieval songs as well as performances of actual medieval repertoire. In modeling their songs and sounds after historical recordings of medieval music, Dead Can Dance also adopted some of the ideological parameters of these performances and historical reconstructions. This thesis, a musical composition of my own making, is about the ending of a relationship. The written component describes both the pragmatic nature of the piece as well as the theoretical analysis of the musical score and CD components. The music was written to convey feelings of anger, sadness, and relief that one can feel during and after a break up. The end of the piece deals with reconciliation between the two people.
