Melody In The Motets Of T.L. De Victoria And The Palestrina Style: A Comparative Analysis, Patrick John Brill

This thesis is concerned with the problem of whether the melodic treatment in the motets of Tomas Luis de Victoria is in the Palestrina style. It was engendered by the fact that the melodic styles in the motets of these two composers sound so similar; and by the fact that several scholars disagree as to their stylistic affinities. The method used for this study was based on the research of Knud Jeppesen, who articulated seventy-nine stylistic principles governing the Palestrina melodic style. This recital was performed by Laurie Hoeppner on March 9, 1990 in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music in performance (bassoon) degree. The pieces were representative of various style periods, including Baroque, Classic, and Twentieth Century. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was an Italian composer of the baroque era. He learned to play . the violin under his father's instruction, but later turned his attention to vocal and contrapuntal studies. Following his father's wishes, Marcello also pursued a legal career during his lifetime. Marcello's music includes a variety of genres; the Sonata in G Major is typical of his style. The …

An annotated bibliography of 92 children's fiction books dealing with music: or musicians was compiled. Each book was rated concerning negativity toward music:, sexism, the primary vehicle of music: production, and accuracy of musical facts. Titles were obtained from colleagues, selective and non-selective bibliographic: sources, and browsing and searching card catalogs of seven different libraries. Not included were opera librettos, short story collections, or illustrated songs. Each book was read and analyzed by the researcher. Twenty-three percent of the books showed at least some negativity; forty-eight percent had at lea.st one female main or musical supporting character, forty-six percent rated …

The Piano Sonata in C major, L. 104, by Domenico Scarlatti, is perhaps the best known of Scarlatti's sonatas. It is the only one with a recapitulation which mirrors in each possible detail the parts of the exposition. Small though its proportions are (sixty-six measures), this piece nevertheless contains within 1 t all the essential elements of classical sonata form. The opening subject in C major is followed by a second subject in G major, distinct in its rhythmic and melodic contours from the first. Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) is acknowledged by most wind conductors as a major contributor to the field of wind music. He achieved this distinction through his numerous compositions for varying combinations of wind instruments. Many of his works have become standard repertory pieces for the wind band medium: Lincolnshire Posy. Colonial Song, Irish Tune from County Derry, Molly on the Shore, Children's March, and Country Gardens are but a few. In addition to these standard pieces, Grainger arranged for winds numerous compositions which were originally conceived for another medium.

The Terpsichore Collection Of Michael Praetorius, Judith G. Freshwater

The Terpsichore musarum was compiled and published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius, a man of many accomplishments. The secular pieces in Terpsichore represent a major departure from his otherwise religious musical output. Roughly a third of the tunes in the collection are borrowed from contemporary lute tablatures, while the remainder are French dance melodies given to Praetorius by the dance master Antoine Emeraude and the violinist Francisque Caroubel. The collection consists of 312 dances including branles, courantes , ballets, voltes, and passamezzos. Praetorius published it in 1612 in a set of five part books . A modern edition, prepared by …

Prairie Idyll: An Original Composition For Orchestra, Peter Hamlin

Prairie Idyll is an orchestra composition scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and trumpets in pairs, four horns, percussion, harp, and medium-sized string section. The availability of exceptional solo players in the first performances encouraged virtuosic writing in many of the parts. The work developed as a musical interpretation of the Cedar Hills Sand Prairie, a small, protected virgin patch of prairie in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The landscape inspired the moods that run through the piece, as well as the asynchronous and layered rhythmic devices employed throughout.

Two Latin American works, Quarup (Callado, 1967) and Los pasos perdidos (Carpentier, 1959) interpret in their protagonists the perennial problem of the modern alienated human in the metropolis. The introduction to this thesis shows how this alienated protagonist is a central preoccupation in Latin American literature since the beginning of modern urbanization and industrialization in the hemisphere. The loss of any real human identity in modern life inevitably leads to the search for new, cultural and personal identity. My paintings are intended to give visible form to what is expressed in this poem. The series, "The Passage" (slides 1-11, 14) and the rest of the works in this exhibition, come out of a concept that has interested me since last year. The substance of this concept is a duality concerning the falseness of art as being one of its positive qualities and the realness of art another. I consider the paintings as part of a continuing investigation of this idea.

This recital displays several musical styles in which the trumpet (and related instruments) has been and is currently used, The trumpet has been employed as a solo instrument and in an accompanying role, as well as a voice in various ensembles. The trumpet has existed in some form since antiquity. As it has been present since the inception of notated music, we are able to draw trumpet literature from every stylistic period in Western music. Pieces performed on this recital represent Baroque, pre-Classic, and twentieth-century styles of music in several different performance media.

One of the basic principles of music education is to expose students to music so that they can have the opportunity to enjoy it and accept it as part of their lives. This study investigated how repetition of a musical selection affects musical enjoyment for children in grades 1 through 6. The study also considered the process of directed listening as a variable which may cause additional effects when repeating musical selections. In 1722, Bach completed his first volume of twenty-four preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys in chromatic order, entitled "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier" (The Well-Tempered Clavier). In 1742, he finished a second series of these works which became known as "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II." The preludes in Book I display a free, nearly improvisatory style, not bound to any set form. In Book II, Bach chose various standard keyboard structures as a basis for the preludes, with the result that they exemplify many late Baroque keyboard forms and evidence an astounding diversity of styles and moods. …

The development of sacred German baroque music is definitively illustrated in the works of its two greatest masters, Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Schutz initiated the baroque movement in Germany when he infused the old polyphonic German style with elements of the Italian stile moderno and Venetian cori spezzati. The union of these styles subsequently became the predominant feature of German baroque music that reached its zenith in the works of J.S. Bach. John Stanley (1714-1786) was an English composer and organist, blind from the age of three, who was most widely known for his performance of organ voluntaries. His performances attracted musicians, including his colleague Handel, from all over London and the surrounding area. The Suite #1 of Trumpet Voluntaries is a collection including two movements from Ten Voluntaries for the Organ or Harpsichord Composed by John Stanley, volume six, published by John Johnson of London in 1752, and one movement from volume seven of the same collection, published by Johnson in 1754. The University of Northern Iowa Collegium Musicum performs a program of music representing works from medieval England, the Flemish School, and sixteenth-century Italy. The program also includes instrumental music and a selection of Elizabethan madrigals. The ensemble performing this program, the Collegium Musicum, consists of recorders, crumhorns, strings, harpsichord, troubador harp, guitar, and eighteen singers utilized in various combinations.

Mycenae was conceived in September 1982 and was completed in January 1983. It is scored for orchestra and two narrators prerecorded on tape. The composition was inspired by a poem by Greek poet George Seferis entitled "Mycenae." In an effort to stay within programmatic planes, the music reflects many of the metaphorical ideas of the poem and materializes them - or realizes them - by exploiting unusual sound effects. The poem thrives on the use of symbolism and metaphor by drawing analogues between the tragedy of one of the most prominent ancient civilizations (the civilization of Mycenae) and the tragedy …
