This recital was prepared and presented in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music in Flute Performance degree requirements. The pieces presented represent a variety of musical styles, historical periods, and instrumental combinations. The purpose of this abstract is to provide a brief overview of the works performed and to offer insights into the historical context of each piece. Knowledge gained in writing this document was valuable to the performer in preparing the recital.

Music composition in the twentieth century is an eclectic discipline. For the past one hundred years composers have employed a vast array of techniques to express their music, more so than in any other era in history. No universally accepted "common practice" exists for the contemporary writer. Although certain aesthetic considerations regarding style, form, and content are pondered by the composer, their applications vary widely. The composer is compelled to create not only a cohesive piece of music, but also define the very compositional parameters that are to be used-and these parameters quite often are different for every composition. The program for this recital consists of works by Pierre Gabaye, Robert Suderburg, Sergei Vasilenko, and Elgar Howarth. Though their respective compositions for trumpet were written in approximately the same time period, each exhibits a unique musical style in their writings for the instrument. The following paper will examine these different approaches, as well as present information pertaining to the lives of these composers.

New Computer Software, Cd-Roms, And Videodiscs In K-12 Music Education: What Music Educators And Media Specialists Need To Know : A Selected Annotated Bibliography, Brent A. Andrews

This study identified new music education resources in CD-Rom, videodisc, and computer software formats created from 1990-1995. Each item was evaluated according to its effectiveness in meeting the three different domains of learning; affective, cognitive, and psychomotor. The study also identified items that exhibited multicultural diversity. The resulting annotated bibliography lists twenty-two resources with critical evaluations of use to music teachers and library media specialists.

A Survey Of Pedagogical Techniques For The College Jazz Program, Eric D. Allen

The primary purpose of this paper is to serve as a summation for most of the course work and activities involved with the Master of Music in Jazz Pedagogy degree. This paper will examine various aspects of teaching jazz at the college level as well as examine common practice jazz repertoire from the performer's standpoint. The pieces featured on the corequisite jazz pedagogy recital, all of which were chosen because of their instructional value, will serve as the primary examples for discussion.

This abstract will include information about the composers represented, some of their general compositional stylistic traits, and a discussion of the specific pieces performed.

This document will discuss four examples of Classic Era wind composition, known as Harmoniemusik, and their performance on a Graduate Conducting recital in March, 1991 at the University of 1 Northern Iowa. This recital was presented as a part of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Conducting. The history of Harmoniemusik and its medium, the wind octet, will be presented, describing its function, popularity, and patronage. Graduate Recital In Voice: Song Cycles By Robert Schumann And Benjamin Britten, Jeffrey J. Brich

On Saturday, April 17, 1993, Jeffrey Brich, tenor, presented a recital in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music degree. The recital, approximately one hour in length, consisted of two song cycles. The first cycle performed was Dichterliebe (1840) by Robert Schumann, which contains sixteen songs set to poetry from Heinrich Heine's poetic cycle, Lyrisches Intermezzo. Following an intermission, the recital resumed with a performance of Britten's Serenade, Op. 31 (1943). Originally composed for tenor, horn and strings, the soloist opted to use Britten's piano reduction of the string accompaniment for this performance of the work.

The intent of this recital was to give the listener an opportunity to hear music that otherwise may not be available due to lack of performance or recordings. All of the compositions were written in the twentieth century and include Stan Friedman's Solus (1975), Chamber Music VII: Ceremonies for Trumpet and Piano (1984) by Robert Suderburg, the Caprice (1972) of Joseph Turrin, Five Poems of Emily Dickinson for Trumpet and Narrator (1978) by Jay Rizzetto, and three pieces by Dimitri Shostakovich-Romance from Ballet Suite no. 2 (1951) and two of his Three Fantastic Dances (1922). Art critic Donald Kuspit proposes for the future an art which is symbolic spiritual art, a communicative extension of silent painting, it must dramatize (respiritualize, revitalize) the forms it uses to make them spiritually convincing. The content of my graduate choral conducting recital was Missa Brevis, K 259, the "Organ Solo Mass," in C major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and was performed by the University of Northern Iowa Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra. The mass was performed second on the program, following three settings of the Salve Regina text from the Catholic liturgy, a plainchant, a four voice motet by Orlando di Lasso and a setting in G minor by Franz Joseph Haydn, conducted by Dr. Bruce Chamberlain.

Verbal Rehearsal Methods And Their Effects On Expressive Music Performance: A Comparison Of Verbal Explanation And Transformational Verbal Imagery, Leonard M. Upham

The purpose of this study was to determine if use of transformational verbal imagery rehearsal methods, when compared to use of methods based on verbal explanation, resulted in (a) higher levels of expressive performance by wind quintets and (b) greater appreciation of the composition by quintet members.

The study used a posttest-only control-group design. Thirty high school brass and/or woodwind quintets were randomly assigned to experimental groups (n = 15) or control groups (n = 15). A composition rich in expressive aspects of music was used. Each quintet had three rehearsals. The first rehearsal dealt with the technical aspects of …

With her troops defeated, herself captured and thrown into chains by her gloating enemy Tolomeo, and her lover reported dead, Cleopatra sings a lament. The first group of pieces on the recital is a pair of sonatas, K.148 and K.149 by Domenico Scarlatti. Domenico Scarlatti wrote approximately 555 sonatas and composed 328 of them are in pairs. The sonatas in these pairs were intended to be performed together. He also composed groupings of 3 sonatas. Scarlatti used Italian terms such as "allegro," "presto," etc., for his sonatas, but they do not tell us much about tempo. The words are more indicative of the rhythmic character and mood of the pieces. Although D. Scarlatti was a great virtuoso, consideration in performing his music must include …

The following pages can be but a meager attempt at depicting Karel Husa, the man, and his music. The two are nearly inseparable. One cannot understand the music without having some knowledge of the man. However, the music is so much a part of Husa·s character that its inclusion is demanded. Inspirations Diabolique ( 1965), a multiple percussion solo m five movements by Rick Tagawa, was chosen for the opening piece in the recital. This piece is composed for four suspended cymbals, bongo drums, tambourine, two snare drums, field drum, and bass drum. Sticks, wire brushes, triangle beaters, and four soft mallets are indicated and provide the opportunity for a variety of sounds.

The accompanist 1. was Svetlana Gabruk, a University of Northern Iowa Master of Music candidate and student of Dr. Joyce Gault. The recital opened with a set of five short songs from Claudio Monteverdi's Scherzi Musicali printed in 1632 by Bartholomeo Magni. Monteverdi composed at a time when solo songs were very popular, but he himself wrote very few.
