A Proposed Elementary And Secondary Public School Music Curriculum For The Grinnell-Newburg Community School District, Arthur William Emry

The problem which was considered in this study was the need to develop an improved music curriculum for the Grinnell-Newburg Community Schools. The need for a vertically articulated curriculum was substantiated in a report by the North Central Association Evaluation Team which visited the Grinnell High School in March, 1973. The present music curriculum was investigated to determine the extent of the needs. Considered were the number of music courses offered, the written objectives of each course, the coordination of the courses by the teachers, the number of music teachers, and the projection of the school enrollment.

A Program of Alto Saxophone Music was performed in the auditorium of the Music Hall May 1, 1972 at 8:15 P.M., University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. The program consisted of music selected from the Baroque, Romantic, and Contemporary Periods using transcriptions and original compositions for the saxophone. A tape recording of this recital is retained in the office of the music department. The decade of the 1960's witnessed a growing interest in choral chamber music. This became increasingly apparent in clinics and conventions across the country which devoted considerable attention to chamber choir literature, style , and performance practice. This trend was further manifested through informative articles, which appeared in music periodicals with growing regularity late in the decade, concerning the chamber choir and inherent problems. Choral chamber music took on added significance in Iowa in 1968 when the Iowa High School Music Association introduced chamber choir competition into the state music contest series. The 18th century was a golden age for flute music. The greater as well as the lesser composers wrote abundantly for the instrument. Perhaps the greatest composer of this century was Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), who made important contributions to the flute literature of that era. Bach's works can be divided chronologically into three stages: the early or "organ music" stage, the middle or "instrumental music" stage, and the final "church music" stage. We shall be concerned with his instrumental music stage and, more specifically, the chamber music which it incorporated.

This study has analyzed the merits of class piano instruction for the purpose of suggesting effective curriculum and group teaching technics. When compared with the aims of private instruction, the goals and purposes of the class approach placed more emphasis upon group dynamics as a means of developing better musical understanding.

Suggestions were offered pertaining to grouping, class management, goals, approaches, and course content for pre-piano musicianship classes, for piano classes comprised of seven and eight year old children, and for adult piano classes. My visual thesis, titled "Sojourn," is made up of 12 paintings, plus four preparatory drawings and color studies. Collectively, these works are an ongoing narrative commentary on vagaries of the human condition as I have observed them during the past 35 or so years of my adult life. The composition is based on a twelve-tone row, and its derivative forms of retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion. These sequences of tones serve as a unifying factor through out the composition. The rhythmic texture has been so structured as to avoid metric patterns implying tonality. This has been achieved through the use of cross rhythms and avoidance of stress at regular time intervals. The composition makes use of motivic variation melodically, texturally, and arithmetically. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if there was a low standard of rhythmic response in certain fourth, fifth, and sixth grade pupils in the Hartley (Iowa) Community School; (2) if it was possible to construct a diagnostic instrument which would identify the specific areas of weakness which may contribute to the low standard of rhythmic response in these students; and (3) if the results obtained from the administration of the diagnostic instrument would enable the writer to make recommendations for teaching methods and materials which may correct the deficiencies found.

The emphasis on chamber music may be considered one of the most interesting and important developments in the school music program today. There is perhaps no other musical medium which holds greater possibilities for the development of the student's musical ability. In the years following World War II, the instrumental music programs in many schools have grown to the point where there are sufficient string and wind players to perform many major orchestral works. A student who performs in either an orchestra or band, however, cannot develop a critical sensitivity towards ensemble.

The Wochenlied, also known as the "Hymn of the Week" or the "de tempore hymn," was a product of the Reformation. Its inception was found in the attitude of Martin Luther toward congregational singing, his resulting emphasis upon the chorale as the vehicle for such singing, and his liturgical reforms. The Wochenlied plan became an integral part of Lutheran worship practice in Germany during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The pitch to which the present day performing musical organizations tune, and subsequently the pitch at which they play their selected compositions, has usually been accepted as being the actual pitch intended by the composer for that particular piece. This is not always true. The pitch of the note A, which is used by most orchestras for tuning, has varied greatly over the last three to four hundred year•. Therefore, the pitch used at the time a particular composition was being written may have been higher or lower than the one in use today.
