The purpose of this writing is to:

1. to clarify and give added meaning to the recital which is being presented partially in place of a master's thesis

2. to give expression to those studies which the author feels are most helpful in strengthening him In his teaching.

The paper will consequently consist of four sections; one will deal with the vocal mechanism which should be thoroughly understood by every vocal teacher, whether he may work with young teen-agers or college students. The next two sections will cover the development of vocal pedagogy and the evolution of the art song. …

It was quite revealing to learn how much can be forgotten and how many incorrect habits can be developed in a long period of time without continuous study. Many hours of work and continuous effort have been devoted in an attempt to overcome these seemingly insurmountable problems.

It has been interesting to note the development of the instrumental program in Utah in the past twenty-five years. Instrumentalists are in demand for a great number of organizations which perform in various capacities from the sports spectaculars to symphonic band and orchestras. Furthermore, the personnel of these groups are usually trained as soloists.

Much of this improvement has been due to the efforts of dedicated musicians, teachers who are affiliated with institutions of higher learning. They have marshalled the resources of the colleges and universities to upgrade the level of music education. They have trained people to train others …

This study was initiated to deal with a problem faced by the teacher of the self-contained elementary classroom. She cannot be equally well-prepared to teach all subjects. Music frequently is poorly taught or neglected by the teacher who feels musically inadequate. It was the purpose of this study to provide materials for these teachers so that they might teach music more effectively.

The writer, in preparing for the recital , was concerned mainly with the following objectives:

1. To improve his own ability to perform well with the vocal instrument.

2. To find new avenues of approach to the problem of teaching correct vocal methods in the classroom.

It is the belief of the writer that if one does not continue to study and learn of the many problems that arise in teaching the vocal art , he will not perform well as a teacher of that, or any, art. The writer is sure that if he had not continued his studies …

As long as the writer has been considering his graduate program, he has felt, because of his own peculiar limitations as a performer, that a recital project would be more beneficial to hie developing musicianship than a research and thesis project.

Strangely enough, the writer had participated quite actively for seventeen years in a most varied succession of musical organizations without having acquired that badge of authority that his successful colleagues wore so proudly: mastery of a particular instrument.

Many needs of the instrumental music teacher are filled by his being able to demonstrate tone quality, phrasing , proper breath support, and technique. One of the needs is the enrichment of the aesthetic portion of the student's education. The student may have great potential but must be guided with the demonstrations listed above to gain a fine musical experience. The teacher then understands the needs of the student and is able to fulfill them by the same type of study that every student must go through to play his instrument well.

Fort Hays Studies Series

Among the Venetian printers who published music in the opening decade of the seventeenth century, Alessandro Rauerij was one o fthe most active. The Canzoni consists of nine part-books-- eight for the melodic voices; the ninth, an organ-bass. The collection contains thirty-six instrumental canzonas. The present volume constitutes a modern edition of Rauerij's collection and is presented in an open score.

The prospect of presenting a recital was very exciting to the author for two reasons. First, in spite of the fact that he has been associated with music as a performer and teacher-conductor for twenty years, this writer has participated in only one formal solo recital situation. He must also understand the problems which the student will encounter and have to overcome in the study of the different instruments. One of the most effective methods of learning is through actual performance . After having spent a number of years in the teaching profession, the writer has become aware of the need for a study dealing with the specific and technical problems in playing the cornet.

The problems of performance on the cornet may readily be divided into three groups: (1) those having to do with the instrument, (2) those having to do with the player, and (3) those having to do with the interpretation of music.
