Visions Infernales: Characteristics Of Style And Interpretation, George F. Skipworth

Visions Infernales by the French composer Henri Sauguet is a song cycle for the bass voice with piano accompaniment set to a text by the twentieth-century poet, }fax Jacob. This composition, published in France in 1950, is contemporary in style with considerable dissonance, and therefore is probably not well known in this country. However, student and professional should become more familiar with the style characteristics and performance of modern repertoire.

It included the Prelude and Fugue from the Sonata in g minor for unaccompanied violin by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Aaron Copland, Concerto no. III in b minor by Camille Saint-Saens, "On Wings of Song" by Felix Mendelssohn, and "Perpe tual Motion" by Ottakar Novacek. A common philosophy of administrators and music educators should be prerequisite for a successful music program. This philosophy should permit enough flexibility to allow for individual differences and yet be rigid enough to encompass general education needs and goals. It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.

An Experiment In Teaching Perfect Pitch With Programmed Learning, Harry Ross Nelson

Ten college students were subjects of an experiment dealing with the teaching of perfect pitch through programmed learning. The experiment was based on a similar study by Dr. Robert W. Lundin. An attempt was made to use equipment readily available in public schools, and to make the lessons as nearly self-teaching as possible.

The Influence Of Freemasonry On Some Of The Music Of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Lloyd Earl Mitchell

There is considerable evidence to indicate that the Fraternity of Freemasonry exerted creative impulses to some of the music of Wolfgang Mozart, subsequent to 1784. This study shows that Mozart, by virtue of his membership in the Order, was sufficiently impressed with benevolences and spiritual teachings of Freemasonry to symbolically reflect the ritual of the Order in an artistic manner. To support this contention a review of Freemasonry in the Eighteenth Century, an analysis of Mozart's association with Masonry, an inquiry into the relation of Freemasonry and the existing religious order, and an overview of Mozart's Masonic compositions are presented.

An Original Composition For Band “Suite For Band”, Bill R. Love

The writer's contemporary work seeks to contribute to the growing repertoire of original band music. The technique, range, intonation, and rhythm problems of average high school musicians are taken into special consideration. It could easily serve as an introductory piece to performers unfamiliar with the contemporary idiom. Although performance difficulties are kept to a minimum, "Suite for Band" should prove musically challenging and worthwhile to both high school and college bands.

This paper was written for the purpose of discovering how the clarinet developed into the important instrument it is today. There have been many changes and additions to the mechanism and also in tonal characteristics since the first two-keyed clarinet was invented. These changes were the result of an effort to extend the range of the instrument, improve its tone, and to meet the demands of the composers of the day.

The writer, having performed all of Weber's concertos and Johannes Brahms' "Sonata in F Minor," found it necessary to adopt a change of style and concept in learning and performing the Mozart concerto. The light, flowing style of the young musical genius is a contrast indeed to the flamboyant flagrancy of Weber. Mozart's conception of the phrase, the musical line, the completeness of each melodic statement varies in large measure from that of Carl von Weber and Johannes Brahms.

The purpose of this study is to investigate and ascertain the history and development of the étude as a specific form of didactic literature for the violin. All influential factors, both non-musical and musical, are considered; in a study of this type, however, more space is devoted to the musical than to the non-musical elements. This being the case, an investigation of instructional materials for the violin comprises the major portion of this writing. The period covered is form 1523 to around 1800.

The study of the solo concerto cadenza is one that encompasses the areas of performance, history and theory. Even though the cadenza occupies a small place in the total music literature, it is a sort of microcosm of music. It would be impossible to make a study of the cadenza without completely understanding the concerto and related forms of music. An historical study such as this can lead to deeper understanding of the music to be performed.

The purpose of this composition is to introduce the instruments of the band to audiences, particularly of elementary school age. The work is written in the style of a theme and variations. Each variation is intended to display the musical characteristics of a musical instrument or instruments. As the narrator introduces each group of instruments, the players should stand and display the instruments so that the audience will learn to recognize the instruments by sight and sound. The composition may be performed without the narration if so desired.

music educators generally agree that improvements in instructional materials and teaching methods would simplify the process of training the young percussionist who wishes t o play drums in a stage or dance band. There is a need far an organized method of procedure to help teachers and students in this regard.

In this paper it is proposed to examine the necessary equipment and instruments and to analyze the playing techniques fundamental to adequate performance of stage band literature. It is further proposed to show a new method for stage or dance band drum students based on the techniques analyzed.

It was the purpose of this study to analyze the effect that three backgrounds had on the silent reading achievement test results of sixth grade students. No music, soothing instrumental music, and stimulating instrumental music were used.
