Study And Analysis Of Six Twentieth Century Wind Band Works, Rick Warren Wallace

This thesis presents a detailed study and analysis of six significant wind band works composed during the twentieth century, chosen for their prominence within the standard repertoire and their influence on the development of band literature. The selected works include Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band, Percy Grainger’s Colonial Song, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Toccata Marziale, Norman Dello Joio’s Variants on a Medieval Tune, John Barnes Chance’s Variations on a Korean Folk Song, and Claude T. Smith’s Emphatic Variations.

The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff

The aim of this study was to assess how young children between the ages of one and four years develop rhythm skills. The project was a pilot study conducted at 11 preschools and day care centers in Stockton, California, and included 60 children. Thirty behaviors comprised the test of various aspects of rhythmic performance. The children were video-taped and the tapes were then analyzed. By examining how many children in a particular age group could perform a particular task, a sequence became apparent. This body of research can now be used as a basis for further studies with the aim …

A Study Of Factors That Influence East Tennessee Band Directors In Their Decision To Attend Marching Band Competition, Jimmye Kay Basham

Rogers (1983) has identified four groups of factors that most influence band directors to attend marching band competitions. Those factors are: (1) pressure from parents, students, administrators, and others; (2) budgetary considerations; (3) general educational values; and (4) musical values. The purpose of this study was to -weigh the extent to which the factors identified by Rogers influence decisions of East Tennessee band directors to participate in marching band competitions.

One of the basic principles of music education is to expose students to music so that they can have the opportunity to enjoy it and accept it as part of their lives. This study investigated how repetition of a musical selection affects musical enjoyment for children in grades 1 through 6. The study also considered the process of directed listening as a variable which may cause additional effects when repeating musical selections. The 194 students in grades 1 through 6 at Sacred Heart School in Waterloo, Iowa participated in the study. These students were representative of white, middle-class families and …

Singing school teachers, who teach rural church congregations to sing from shape-note gospel songbooks, are still working in southcentral Kentucky, but the demand for them is smaller than it was in the first half of the twentieth century. The interdependence network in which singing school teachers, songbook publishers, and community singing events were key parts began to weaken in the 1940s as a result of the growth in popularity of professional gospel quartet concerts and gospel record albums. The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression And Rhythmic Competency: A Correlational Study, Michael J. Migliore

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between a test of rhythmic competency and the psychomotor retardation subtest of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Twenty-six endogenously depressed inpatient adults participated in a medication-free pretest. Posttests were administered When a) values reached therapeutic blood levels and b) subjects were clinically observed to have improved. Results demonstrated modest correlations between the Hamilton scale and several subtests of the Rhythmic Competency measure; however, based on this study, the Rhythmic Competency Test could not be recommended as an indicator of psychomotor retardation.

This collection of Revella E. Hughes papers consists of photo reproductions of the pages of her press book pertaining to her career in New York and on tour. Original pressbook located in the Moorland-Springarn Research Center, Howard University. Later accession includes holograph arrangements for the organ; research papers written while a graduate student at Northwestern University, where Dr. Hughes earned a Masters of Music degree in 1942. Newspaper clippings comprise the bulk of the collection. Also included are programs and announcements of concerts, recitals, and other musical events in which Miss Hughes participated.
