The Evolution Of Doris Lessing's Art From A Mystical Moment To Space Fiction, Nancy Topping Bazin

After publishing ten major novels, Doris Lessing has begun writing what she calls '·space fiction'· for her new series entitled Canopus in Argos: Archives. In a review of the first two novels published in this series, namely, Shikasta ( 1979) and the Marriages Between Zones Three. Four, and Five (1980)1. Jean Pickering stresses that many of Doris Lessing's most avid readers were initially attracted to her because of her insights about the female experience and because of her allegiance to nineteenth-century realism." Acknowledging the vast and continuing "realignments of power and long overdue reassessments of the cultures of the third world," the editors of the Critical Perspectives series propose, through a projected thirty-six critical monographs, to provide Euro-American audiences with the "documents and polemics" which reflect the reality of these realignments and reassessments. The thirteenth volume to appear in the series, Critical Perspectives on Ngugi wa Thiong' o, is one such document, comprising twenty-four essays by and about Ngugi, East Africa's foremost novelist and social critic (see WLT 59:1, pp. 26-30). A Reminiscence Of Stephen Crane, Paul Sorrentino
The Courier
John S. Mayfield (1904-1983), a curator of rare books and manuscripts at Syracuse University from 1961 to 1971, assembled a small, but noteworthy, collection of material by and about Stephen Crane (1871-1900), one of the University's most famous students. Mayfield himself published several articles on Crane, including three in the Syracuse Library Associates Courier, which he edited from 1962 to 1970. Judging from Mayfield's own notes, one can conclude that he intended to publish, perhaps in the Courier, the following brief reminiscence of Crane.
