Time Theory In The Short Fiction Of Jorge Luis Borges: The Language Of "Reality", Lyn Lamkin

Time boundaries delimit mankind's concerns while subtly affecting the perspective men have on all ontological questions. However, Jorge Luis Borges' short fiction develops an a-temporal perspective that denies the distinctions of a past, present, and future, obscuring traditional human conceptions of time and reality. He repetitively uses cycles and labyrinths as spatial metaphors for time to emphasize man's Inability to escape the maze of existence and to define a final reality that he can order. Borges' fiction suggests that only by trying to understand what exists beyond our universe in an unknowable. Infinite time continuum can human reality be ordered …

This book is excellent both for classicists and Spenserians, for the latter not only because Homer is the (direct or indirect) source for many episodes in The Faerie Queene but because the modes of understanding epic which Lamberton explores are crucial to the comprehension of Spenserian allegory. The work continues the tradition of examination of classical myth and allegory begun by Felix Buffiere, Jerome Carcopino, Franz Cumont, and Jean Pepin. [Introduction To] Achim Von Arnim's Novellensammlung 1812: Balance And Mediation, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Working within the context of current Arnim studies, Bonfiglio demonstrates how Novellensammlung 1812 is a coherent opus that allegorically represents a cosmology structured by Arnim's early work in physics along with his reception of Schelling's Naturphilosophie. These influences laid the foundation for an electromagnetic cosmology that informs Arnim's historiography, aesthetics, and poetics. Bonfiglio focuses his study on how Arnim's Romantic science determines his use of tropes, his Romantic idealism, and his own idiom of Romantic irony.
