Upon my arrival on earth. Mother forbad me from doing two things: going to K-Mart and talking to my Uncle Ike.

Ironically, the first word I learned to read was "K-Mart.” Mother pointed out the store every time we drove past. She told me many times of the evil that could befall a person if he entered its doors. I reckoned she knew all about K-Mart because she claimed to have gone there twice before I was born. Historically, the First Amendment right to free speech was limited to certain groups. Language, although constitutionally guaranteed since 1776, has not always been a freedom for everyone. Among those at language's mercy are immigrants, slaves, and women. Women's speech was limited not by a lack of knowledge, but by a societal acceptance of women as inferior.

What then do women do to overcome this ever-present chasm? What women did in the nineteenth century, the 1960s, and are still doing today is: write more creatively. The tighter the restraint of language, the more inventive the woman must be to use it …

The brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky have been Russia's most popular science fiction writers since their first publication appeared in 1959. Along with the publication of his two earlier scholarly works, The Epic in Africa (1979) and Myth in Africa (1983), Isidore Okpewho's latest book, African Oral Literature, seems to have completed the natural course of scholarship "in the field," as Afracanists continue their scholarly attempts ar (re)visioning/(re)writing African oral traditions and literatures from an "insider" perspective--from the horse's moth, so to speak.

Le processus de traduction implique l'interprétation précise du sens contextuel du texte-source dans la mesure où les contraintes syntaxiques et associatives de la langue cible le permettent. À cette fin, le traducteur littéraire doit se poser les questions fondamentales suivantes avant de commencer la traduction d'une œuvre : quelle est l'essence stylistique de l'original ? quels en sont l'intention et le but ? Que faire lorsque le texte est culturellement marqué ? C'est en tenant compte de ces interrogations que nous examinerons la traduction du yoruba à l'anglais de Igbo Olodumare de D.O. Fagunwa.
