Student Works (2000-2009)

Lao She (1899-1966) was one of the greatest realist writers in modem Chinese literature. His achievements had won him high acclaim in the literary world. Apart from his novels, poems, critiques and essays, he was also known for his many excellent dramas, where he showed his talent in character portrayal. Most notably, he succeeded in creating vivid male and female roles with unique individual traits. The focus of this research is the various female characters in Lao She's modem dramas.

"Travels" by Sir John Mandeville established a typology for succeeding European representations of non-European peoples, in which non-Europeans were described as proto-Christians. Mandeville's hegemonic impulse prepared the way for the imperial appropriation of cultures and peoples.

Huang Zunxian (1848-1905) was a famous patriot and diplomat during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Besides that, he was also an outstanding poet who expressed his reformation ideas through poetry between the middle of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Huang's life as a diplomat and poet was paved with numerous obstacles and he even had to counter many different challenges. He served as a diplomat for twelve years, beginning his first diplomat duty in Japan in 1877, where he served for five years. This research project concentrates on the development of the Sarawak Chinese Literature in the nineteen fifties and early sixties. In the early fifties, the Sarawak Chinese Literature was still in its infancy stage. The youths had yet come of age and were struggling and searching for their paths in literary writing. Hence, their works were short in quantity and inferior in quality. However, these works were strongly associated with the time and thought of the society of the period. Discusses how defining key terms in context helps students understand and retain concepts. Considers how implementing small-group discussion dramatically changed the classroom dynamics and involved more students in the discovery process. Finds that in small peer groups, students are more inclined to ask questions and help each other clarify their thinking.

This work is divided into four parts, each having its own tone while contributing to the work as a whole. To emphasize this dual purpose, I chose to title each part with a phrase that both reflects the pieces included within it and contributes to the statement which underscores the thesis: “Follow me my son, beyond the truth of day to day, where redemption hides behind each fleeting smile, and damnation awaits with open arms." 面對父系主流文化的強勢語言，五四時期以來的女性作家想要 (意識或潛意識的) 在其文本中建構女性主體，無疑處於一個較為不利的困境裏。在傳統父權體制中被收編在他者位置上的女性，包括女性作家及其筆下的女性角色，其主體性都難逃複雜微妙的父權二元對立思維。這能夠說明何以張愛玲小說中所湧現的眾多女性家長，其主體性都具有較為複雜微妙的矛盾性。同樣的，在一種不穩定、焦慮和模糊的女性敘述中，要探討同樣不穩定、焦慮和模糊的女性主體和自主意識問題，也是閱讀上的一個難題。

Visualizing Ah Q : An Allegory's Resistance To Representation, Harry H. Kuoshu

Ah Q, Lu Xun's portraiture of Chinese national character figured in a rural rogue, has been an enigma in its representations. Lu Xun's text presents an interesting allegorical irony: while the experience of Ah Q reveals a mentality which makes his otherwise trivial anecdotes interesting, he, as Leo Ou- fan Lee observes, "is a body without an interior self, a face in the crowd, and the crowd’s summary mirror-image”. From the visual sense, we may illustrate this irony by taking Ah Q as both a voyeur and a spectacle - by constantly visualizing spectacles which he may victimize, Ah Q …
