Germán Kratochwil, born in Austria in 1938, soon emigrated to Argentina, but came late to literature after a long career as a sociologist. Meanwhile three novels in German have appeared : Scherbengericht (2012), Río Puro (2013) and Territorium(2016). Since the setting for all three is Patagonia, one could speak of a trilogy of Patagonian novels. Hand in hand with a considerable arsenal of characters, the motives remain constant in the confrontation between past and present, in attempts at social ascent and in the effects of international conflicts in a Patagonia far from the world, only apparently. This paper looks at autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits in the main character of the book Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh, as well as traits associated with mental breakdown. A brief history of the understanding of autism in the media and in medical circles is explained, as well as some notes on the author’s life. The paper also discusses censorship in diverse literature, specifically books about people with disabilities. “Mujeres al rescate de figuras femeninas mitificadas: Malinalli, Claire y Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer,” focuses on three novels that emphasize the act of rewriting the past by means of techniques such as the use of polyphony, the focus on intrahistory, and the act of narrating from the margins of society. In these novels "Maldita yo entre las mujeres" (1991), by Mercedes Valdivieso; "Malinche" (2005), by Laura Esquivel; and "Duerme" (1994), by Carmen Boullosa--, the marginal voice is created through the point of contact between history and fiction. An argument that George Eliot was a novelist intellectually, philosophically, and aesthetically ahead of the majority of her peers thankfully needs no defense two hundred years after her birth. This lofty status, however, does not mean that Eliot was impervious to the cultural preoccupations of her time. Quite the contrary. A central contention of this essay is that Eliot, despite her imposing intellectual reputation, engaged with her culture’s popular interest in human hands in ways that profoundly affected her fiction. Writing across and beyond borders evokes at once the human aspiration to connectedness and the reality of a divided world invested in particular interests. For Ebe Cagli Seidenberg, the act of writing emanates from the Fascist racial laws of 1938, which forced her – a young Jewish Italian woman – to leave her native Italy and find refuge in the United States. This essay comments on the relegated importance of the textual variations of several short stories from Las fuerzas extrañas, by Leopoldo Lugones. It also reproduces the original versions of those stories to collate them with the ones in the final version of the book. The conclusion is reached that those variations are of a quantitative and qualitative importance greater than what is ordinarily assumed, and that they illuminate both the preparation of the book and its ultimate meaning. Finally, we also suggest that “Un fenómeno inexplicable” may have had its origin in a picture of Thomas Henry Huxley, the reputed …

The Revolt against Mourning calls into question the widespread critical alignment of literary modernism with Freudian melancholia. Focusing instead on “mourning,” through close readings of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, James Joyce’s Ulysses, and William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, I demonstrate how their depictions of this notion overturn both its traditional and contemporary understandings. Whereas Freud conceives mourning as a psychic labor that the subject slowly and painfully carries out, Woolf, Joyce, and Faulkner convey it as a destabilizing, subversive, and transformative force to which the subject is radically passive. For Freud, mourning is a matter …

Born and raised in southern Nigeria, Obi Nwakanma is an Igbo poet and scholar of African and African diasporan literature. Als der österreichische Exilant und weltweit anerkannte Literaturwissenschaftler Egon Schwarz im Februar 2017 verstarb, ging sein Nachlass an das Deutsche Literaturarchiv in Marbach, wobei es bereits auch einen Vorlass gegeben hatte. Eine Kopie des Nachlasses wird ebenfalls von der Olin Library an der Washington University in St. Louis aufbewahrt, wo Schwarz zweiunddreißig Jahre lang als Professor tätig gewesen war.

In my research, I will examine James Joyce’s Dubliners as a collection of stories that is unified by an ongoing theme; escape or the desire to escape. In the collection, the want or need to escape serves a major purpose throughout the characters and their lives. This thesis explores five stories that share this theme in particular: “The Sisters,” “Eveline,” “Araby,” “An Encounter,” and “The Dead.” Each story will be discussed in the context of how each story progresses from a want to an actual escape. This piece investigates the relationship between the American Dream and automobility through a generational lens, assessing cultural change in each renewal of the American Dream. Comparing generations of Americans exploring and reforming cultural space reveals evidence of the American Dream as a tendency for generations to expand to new frontiers balanced by a duty to reform current social space. What is space? It is a personal concept that people develop while on journeys toward discovery. Through means both intentional and not, that space can be shared with the world and make the knowledge gained on the journey available to anyone with the same curiosities. By looking into the travels of Ezra Meeker on the Oregon Trail, Horatio Nelson Jackson across country, and William Least Heat-Moon on the blue highway, space can be conceptualized and understood as these three men allow us to understand them through their own words and experiences.
