The Colonelette (October 1973), Department Of Library Special Collections

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Dissertations and Theses

The primary objective of this study is to find, statistically, how the women of Portland lived out their lives. By exploring the role of ethnicity, work and family, and the inter-relationships of these variables, upon their life choices, it is hoped a picture of women will result that can be used as a base for further interpretations on the community of women and the role they play in society.

The study is based on data gathered from the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Federal Manuscript Census Schedules for the city of Portland and East Portland and utilizes a sample of 8,012 …

The Feminist Movement As Reflected In The Gerrit Smith Papers, Judith Mesinger

The Courier

Judith Mesinger details the work and correspondence of famous abolitionist Gerrit Smith, with special emphasis on his support of the early feminist movement of the nineteenth century. The research was aided by the Gerrit Smith Collection in the Syracuse University Special Collections.

The Courier

Margaret Bourke- White presented her personal and professional papers, including hundreds of prints and negatives of her photographs, to Syracuse University before her death in 1971. Following her death, the Library received additional thousands of photographs and negatives from her estate. As a result, the Bourke- White Collection at Syracuse provides an invaluable store of research materials for photographers, journalists, and historians.
