Poetic Portraits Of Older Women In The Great Black Swamp, Sandra L. Faulkner
ICS Fellow Lectures
Dr. Faulkner discusses the importance of oral histories and listening to older women by presenting poetic portraits of older women in the Bowling Green area that she co-created from oral histories. This was a collaborative project with The Wood County Committee on Aging, the BGSU archives, and local women Faulkner interviewed about their experiences across their life course and contributions to our community. These poetic portraits and oral histories will be archived at the BGSU libraries for all of us to learn from.

While there is much to add with regard to more recent developments in the teaching of women's history and web resources, this presentation preserves some of the teaching approaches and particular specialties of my decades of teaching, primarily through Women's Literature classes, but also in specialties that stressed online supplements to textbooks and the expanding canon in American and English Literature. This is a brief overview of how I continue to be engaged with research on Elizabeth Robins in the context of other women writers, post-retirement. The presentation's subtitle might be phrased as "From my study of the one-woman show in graduate school to creative and poetic approaches as emerita researcher." I maintain the Elizabeth Robins Web at JSU and have presented two papers (virtually at recent SAMLA conferences) since leaving the classroom. This presentation was given by Dr. Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh (Georgia State University Library faculty member) and Allyson Stephens (Georgia State University Sociology graduate student) at the 2022 Atlanta Studies Symposium. The presenters describe the methodology and share preliminary analyses of US Census data on Atlanta’s prostitution trade from 1880 through 1910. The presented research is a component of a larger project to reconstruct the lost history of the rise and fall of Atlanta’s prostitution trade from the Postbellum Era through the Progressive Era, drawing from newspapers, US Census data, city directories, property records, maps, and more. Morals And Martial Arts: A Woman's Place Of Empowerment Through Judo, Sydney Wall

This study explores the experiences of women within the world of judo, a combat sport derived from ancient samurai hand-to-hand combat techniques. Although judo was founded as a sport in the 1880s, there was no women’s section until 1923 and, even then, women were barred from competition out of concern for its impact on their ability to have children. It would not be until 1992 that women’s judo became a part of the Olympic program. These limitations on women’s participation have simultaneously resulted from and contributed to the association of judo with notions of masculinity. Despite almost thirty years of …

The goal of this research is to examine family structure in early modern Scotland and England though the use of written communication. The primary focus will be on aristocratic families with a secondary look at upper-middle class families. This is due primarily to availability of records, and also why I will mainly be using written correspondence rather than secondary analyses, as this field is still relatively new. By exploring the development of key familial relationships (e.g. parent-child, husband-wife, and in-law interactions) through private correspondence, larger insights can be drawn about gender and the nuclear family. No Such Thing As A Slave Narrative: Abba, Coobah, And Sally, Shelby K. Miller

Within history, there is a push to combine and generalize individual experiences into a single narrative. However, individual slaves lived massively different lives even when they lived on the same planation. My presentation will focus on three specific slaves from Thomas Thistlewood’s sugar cane plantation in Jamaica. These three women lived in the same place, experienced the same brutality, and yet all responded differently to their trauma. I will agree that historians cannot create a comprehensive slave narrative because of these varying and greatly contrasting lives.

Coping Mechanisms Used by Slaves in Charleston, South Carolina
In Charleston, South Carolina during the Antebellum Era slaves used coping mechanisms to survive the oppression and dehumanization of slavery. Slave implemented coping mechanisms such as religion and music into their daily lives which provided them with a source of hope and solace. Former slaves have stated in personal interviews and writings that reflecting on something other than their reality of bondage inspired them and created hope for a new future. The enslaved found hope through religion and accepted the biblical stories of Christianity as prophecy of the future. Music relayed …

Students in the Boise State University course, “History of Women in Idaho,” helped develop Idaho Women’s History Day with research papers and poster exhibits at the Idaho State Capitol.
