The Tuesday Afternoon Book Club of Rock Hill Records consists of constitutions and by-laws, minutes, membership and officer lists, correspondence, yearbooks and newspaper, clippings relating to the history of the book club. The Tuesday Afternoon Club was organized in Rock Hill, SC by the Saturday Afternoon Club of Rock Hill on May 12, 1955 as a book club for women.

The Pindarian Club of Rock Hill, SC was organized on February 25, 1954 as a daughter club of the Perihelion Club. The purpose of the literary club is to encourage and sustain the intellectual development of its members and to promote better citizenship, inviting therein such social factors as may contribute to this purpose. The records consist of histories, constitutions, bylaws, minutes, membership records, photographs, yearbooks, and newspaper clippings documenting the club’s history.

The Episcopal Churchwomen of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina Records consist of histories, minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, program notes, photographs, newspaper clippings, journals, handbooks, yearbooks, and scrapbooks relating to the history of the Episcopal Church in the Upstate of South Carolina and women’s role in the Church. Of particular interest are the records relating to the Bishops Committee on Race Relations and the Bi-Racial Committee, which was concerned with a Voorhees College disturbance in which black power militants seized control of the college facilities in 1967.

The Juanita Willmon Goggins Papers include correspondence, speeches, biographical data, reports, studies, newspaper clippings, photographs and other papers documenting the political career of Goggins who was the first African-American woman elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. Subjects include home rule for York County, African-Americans in politics, sickle cell anemia, appropriations, taxes, and public education in York County.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) records, dating from 1970 to 1978, include correspondence, legislative journals, magazine articles, newspaper clippings, brochures, pamphlets, and other records relating to the work of the South Carolina Coalition in trying to get the ERA ratified by the South Carolina state legislature. There is relevant material concerning the ERA issue in other states. The Coalition was organized in 1972. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women.

This collection consists of a minute book for the Parkersburg Colored Civic Welfare League covering the period from 1932-1934, a letter of thanks from a League-funded college student in Florida with 1932 minutes on the back, Virgie Giles membership card to the Ohio Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, an invitation to a charity ball, and a card announcing the opening of Giles’ “La Giles Beauty Parlor” in Parkersburg.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) South Carolina Coalition Records consists of correspondence, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, and telegrams, extending from 1972-1978, sent by both supporters and non-supporters of ERA to Coleman Poag, South Carolina state senator for district 6, in an effort to influence Poag’s vote. The ERA was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women.

The project, which began in July 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and Native American. The collection includes a wide variety of material that could be used for research on York County and for instructional purposes by teachers. The collection consists of magazines, newspaper clippings, books, audio tapes, video cassettes, slides, transparencies, and copies of historical documents such as letters and land records.

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a collection of the correspondence of Margaret Parker (nee Ellegood), an eighteenth century Norfolk merchant's wife, The fifty-seven items, which cover the years from 1760 through 1785 and deal mainly with domestic matters, were transcribed from the microfilms of the Parker Family Papers, 1760-1795, Walter Minchinton, general editor {Micro Methods Ltd,,1964). The transcriptions have been arranged chronologically, annotated, and supplemented with background material concerning the Ellegood and Parker families, the history of Norfolk Borough and Princess Anne County, and the place, of women in eighteenth century society.

“They Made Us Dance In The Pig Trough!” Mrs. Blanche Story’S Oral Accounts Of Dating, Courtship, Marriage And Sexual Attitudes In Northcentral Nebraska, 1885-1910, Gayle Waggoner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Oral recollections concerning dating, courtship, marriage and related attitudes were collected from a single informant, Mrs. Blanche Story of Butte, Nebraska. Through in-depth questioning during twelve tape-recorded interview sessions, value- and attitude-oriented accounts were secured for the years 1885 to 1910, the late frontier period in northcentral Nebraska. These detailed reminiscences focus on common life experiences related to interpersonal relationships and the institutions related to them, resulting in a personal or folk history. The single greatest problem in research was the lack of documentation for the attitudinal content of the texts. Corroboration of both specific information and broad patterns of …
