Newly Discovered Writings Of Mary Helen Peck Crane And Agnes Elizabeth Crane, Paul Sorrentino

The Courier

Although several members of Stephen Crane's immediate family were writers, scholars know little about their work. Thomas A. Gullason

published writings by Crane's parents and brother Jonathan Townley, but other items remain to be studied and possibly printed. Fortunately, Melvin H. Schoberlin preserved holographs and transcripts of documents by Crane's sister, Agnes, and mother, Mary Helen, that further reveal the family's interest in writing. Because the transcripts, which Schoberlin copied from materials once owned by Crane's niece Edith, are unique to the Schoberlin Collection, researchers cannot verify their accuracy. On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Frances E. Willard's Southern Tours For Temperance: 1881-1883, Charles Jeffrey Shelton

History Theses & Dissertations

Frances E. Willard (1839-98) was the president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 until her death and one of the foremost temperance advocates of her time. This study explores the impact of Willard's first three tours of the South on that region's temperance movement and southern women, as well as on inter-sectional reconciliation after Reconstruction. The study concludes that Willard's efforts to organize W.C.T.U. chapters in the South were largely successful. Willard and her southern collaborators contributed greatly to a resurgence of the southern temperance movement and the involvement of southern women in community activities, but temperance advocacy …
