Elizabeth Kee served as the first woman to represent West Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1951-1964. Newly available sources: taped interviews with her son, Jim Kee, from 1978 and 1980; a complete copy of Elizabeth Kee’s entries into the Congressional Record; copies of many of her “Keenotes” columns from the late 1950s and early 1960s; and correspondence between Elizabeth Kee and veterans from West Virginia from 1961-1963 allow a more complete picture of Kee to emerge. Elizabeth Kee was not only a hardworking politician, who laid the groundwork for future programs like the War on Poverty, she was …

Southern slaveholding women during the Civil War are usually portrayed as either Eve or the Virgin Mary. They are either depicted as staunch patriotic wives and mothers who out of love suffered and sacrificed most of their worldly goods for the Cause, or as weak-willed creatures who gave up on the war, asked their men to come home, and concerned themselves with getting pretty dresses from the blockade runners and dancing at elaborate balls and bazaars. This latter view, which seems cut so superficially from Gone With the Wind, is nevertheless one that is common in Civil War scholarship …

Between 1975 and 1989 Anna Jane Moyer produced a series of essays for the Gettysburg College alumni magazine capturing “moments” on campus and in the town of Gettysburg since 1832. Treating people, places, and notable events over the course of the College’s first 150 years, Moyer’s sketches reached an appreciative audience at the time. But with the Gettysburg College 175th anniversary approaching, it seemed appropriate to make her writing more readily available to alumni, friends of the College, students, and scholars.

The sketches now republished in To Waken Fond Memory remind readers that the culture of a liberal arts college …

Une série de colloques nationaux et internationaux dans la région méditerranéenne analysa les limitations imposées sur les filles et les femmes musulmanes par la tradition patriarcale et s'adressa au gouvernement pour demander des réformes. The gun-toting woman holds enormous symbolic significance in American culture. For over two centuries, women who pick up guns have disrupted the popular association of guns and masculinity, spurring debates about women's capabilities for violence as well as their capacity for full citizenship. In Her Best Shot, Laura Browder examines the relationship between women and guns and the ways in which the figure of the armed woman has served as a lightning rod for cultural issues.

The collection consists of paper materials related to the Bokair family, especially Ellen Kathryn Bokair. Items include student newspapers, concert programs, and other memorabilia related to Huntington High School during the mid-1950s, as well as letters to Ellen Kathryn from Job’s Daughters and the American Business Women’s Association. Information on other members of the Bokair family is minimal and includes a wedding invitation, report cards, a ceremony pamphlet, letter, and a newspaper article. While the collection spans the years, 1916-1971, the bulk of items date from the 1950s and 1960s.

It is essential to look at the conditions that made the League possible in the first place and also the conditions that led to its demise. To do this, players' backgrounds must be investigated. Who were these women? Where did they come from? Where did they go after the League? These are all fundamental questions that must be answered. One way to look at how the women and the League were perceived by society is to look at the daily reporting of the League in local town newspapers and larger national publications. The 1890s onward ushered in a younger generation of female pro-suffragists in the United States of America (USA). Theoretically slamming the door on the prescriptive ideal of domesticity and women's abstinence from vice and exercise, they disrupted the "traditional" gender fiction or arrangement. In doing so, they made unequivocal that gender, 'race,' and class were not merely culturally constructed categories of identity, but products of the heteropatriarchal power structure which produce and reproduce masculine dominance over women. These female pro-suffragists were, more often than not, condemned by contemporary popular press. They were prevalently depicted as elite white women seeking amusement …
