This collection contains the records for multiple chapters of the West Virginia State Society United Daughters of 1812. Chapters mentioned include the First West Virginia Chapter, Joshua Jones Chapter, Captain James Gibson Chapter, and the Lord Calvert Chapter. Records include yearly chapter reports to the West Virginia State Society, newsletters from the National Society, financial records, and assorted correspondence in record books regarding chapter activities. Louise Hickman materials in this collection include notes on chapter meetings, programs and papers presented at programs, and notes about early American music.

A Window Into Their Lives: The Women Of The Faubourg Saint-Antoine, 1725-1765, Julie Elizabeth Leonard

This study is an examination of laboring class women of Paris during the early eighteenth century. These women did not leave written records of their lives, so information about them comes from legal and judicial records, specifically the papers of the commissaires de police and the records of criminal cases that went before the Châtelet, one of the royal courts of Paris. By examining the challenges and conflicts that individual women faced, we can better understand how laboring-class women of eighteenth-century Paris successfully navigated the legal and customary restrictions that were part of the patriarchal system under which they lived. …

Carrie Eldridge is a genealogical researcher in Chesapeake, Ohio. This collection contains photocopies of many county record books of the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, ranging from the American Revolution until the end of the Civil War. The collection also contains high quality photographs of one room school houses of Cabell County, West Virginia, an audio cassette oral history, books, and pen nibs.

Pugnacité Et Pouvoir: La Représentation Des Femmes Dans Les Fi Lms D’Ousmane Sembène, Sheila Petty
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
As a pioneer of African fi lmmaking, Ousmane Sembène has demonstrated a remarkable dedication to exploring the importance of women in African society. From the struggle against colonial oppression by Diouana in La Noire de… (1966) at the beginning of his career, to the character of Kiné and her struggle to build a life for her children in postcolonial Senegal in Faat Kiné (2000), Sembène has portrayed African women as agents of change and courage in their societies. This essay explores women’s representations in two fi lms from Sembène’s oeuvre, including Black Girl (1966) and Faat Kine (2000). Using narrative …
