Pursuant to a contract between Channel Industries Gas, a Tenneco subsidiary, and the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (letter of June 2 from Stephen E. Kennedy, Channel Industries Gas, to Jack D. Eaton, CAR), an archaeological field survey was made of the proposed natural gas pipeline right-of-way across Mud Island and St. Joseph Island, Aransas County, Texas, on June 9 and 10, 1980.

During July and August 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted survey, testing, and historical research on lands to be included in the Wallisville Lake in Liberty and Chambers Counties, Texas. A summary is presented of 21 previously recorded prehistoric sites within the proposed Plan 2A, with recommendations for further treatment of these sites. Test excavations at a newly located prehistoric site are described. A detailed description of the history and archaeological testing of 19 historic sites is included, along with a history and description of the town of Wallisville. Artifacts are illustrated …

During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).

Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. Site 41TG115 appears to represent a deflated site with materials mixed on the present ground surface. No further …

This monograph is the second in the series of data-oriented reports resulting from the archaeological and ethnohistorical investigations centered on the Spanish mission complex near the modern town of Guerrero, Coahuila, Mexico. Dr. Felix D. Almaraz of The University of Texas at San Antonio has now prepared two of the volumes in the series, of which this is the second. His translation of the 1772 mission inventories of San Juan Bautista and San Bernardo should be of considerable value to those interested in the Spanish Colonial history of northern Mexico and Texas.

In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. The artifact collections have provided additional information on the material culture of the different ethnic and cultural groups to occupy the Alamo. …

The following report prepared by John W. Clark, Jr. presents the findings made during archeological excavations carried out at the site of Sam Houston's horne, "The Woodlands," in Huntsville, Texas. The primary aim of the excavations was to search for evidence of the original alignment and character of the Houston Horne in order to assist efforts to restore the structure to its original configurations. Of particular concern were the original location of the house, the character of the original chimneys and a determination of the presence or absence of a front porch. With those words, Dr. James Berquist, the new director of the American Lutheran Church's Division for Mission and America, addressed the 12th annual convention of the ALC's Conference on lnner City Ministries. More than 50 delegates from 11 regions had gathered in Milwaukee in mid-June for the four-day convention.

Missouri Synod congregations should seek to sponsor Haitian refugees and expand their ministry with handicapped parishoners.

Those were just two of literally dozens of recommendations and resolutions passed at the third biennial convocation of black Missouri Synod congregations. Delegates and visitors from more than half of the synod's 200 black congregations participated in the four-day meeting in mid-July in Chicago.

This concern for the economically disadvantaged and the developing countries takes up a major section of a newly recently released statement, ''Nuclear Energy-Problems and Promises." The American Lutheran Church's Office of Research and Analysis is sending the study resource to its almost 5000 congregations ''to stimulate thinking, promote discussion, and motivate informed Christian response.''

By only a one vote margin, in a secret ballot, the national board of American Lutheran Church Women (ALCW) declined to renew the contract of ALCW executive director, Julie Stine.

Most board members did not wish to have their names attributed to their comments. Stine is portrayed by some as "less traditional, more wholistic" in her view of women's role in the church. According to others, her feminism was threatening to some women and men in the church.

Lutherans have been asked to conduct a series of 15 workshops for 750 employees of the city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The city government made this request because of the success of "Grace and Race" workshops sponsored by Lutherans in South Dakota over the past several years.

These "Grace and Race" workshops sought to help Lutherans overcome racism and sexism in their day-to-day relationships as well as in the larger context of social justice in American society. The presence of a large number of Indians in South Dakota gave special urgency to these workshops.

Passage of such legislation is the ambitious aim of this year's Offering of Letters, sponsored again by Bread for the World, a Christian citizenship movement directed by Lutheran pastor Art Simon.

Entitled "Hunger and Global Security," the offering of letters (letters sent to elected officials) will encourage Congress to redirect U.S. foreign aid to poor nations committed to meeting "basic human needs" in their countries-rather than funding arms build-up or elaborate redevelopment schemes.

That's how Joyce Peltzer described the new opportunities and the new openness for disabled persons in the church at the first National Consultation of Disabled Lutherans.

The late-August event in Kansas City, Missouri, was sponsored by the American Lutheran Church, where Peltzer is a program specialist in ministry with persons with handicapping conditions.

Turning back a proposal from its board of pensions, the executive council of the Lutheran Church in America has declined to settle the issue of health plan coverage of seriously handicapped children.

Earlier the LCA's Court of Adjudication had ruled that the handicapped adopted children could be excluded from the church body's Ministerial Health Benefits Plan only if all seriously handicapped persons were-spouses, natural children, the ministers themselves

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year.
