Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …

This work was sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of the preliminary studies leading to planned developments within the Recreation Area.
Site 41ZP73 was found to contain significant prehistoric archeological deposits which date to both the Late Archaic and the Late Prehistoric periods. On June 9, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated a reported discovery of human bones where construction is underway at the Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria, Texas.
The Center was informed of the discovery by David Welsh of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, who requested that an investigation be made by qualified persons to assess the bone material and immediate surrounding for the purpose of determining the potential importance of the cultural resource.

In May 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an archaeological survey of the proposed route of an eight-inch pipeline to be installed by the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. The pipeline will extend from the Scurlock Oil Company tank farm about one kilometer southwest of Sabine Pass to a landfall on the Gulf Coast at a point about six kilometers west of Texas Point (Fig. 1).

On June 26 and 27, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), conducted cultural resource surveys on the McLean and Gentry leases north of Oakville, Live Oak County, Texas. The survey was done under contract between the CAR and the Exxon Minerals Company, U.S.A. (Work Order No. 00212, dated June 6, 1980). The fieldwork was carried out by Thomas C. Kelly and Michael Woerner, CAR archaeologists, under the supervision of Dr. Thomas R. Hester, Director, and Jack D. Eaton, Acting Director.
