In this thesis I will try to prove that International Armaments are a threat to world peace. When· a nation prepares for war the men who manufacture guns and munitions do a great business. And when war breaks out they really make money. They are willing to sell arms to anybody that is willing to buy. Therefore, they often encourage war so as to sell their implements of destruction.

Archival Manuscripts

The John B. Kinne Diary consists of a transcription of Kinne's eighty-six page diary kept from 1898-1899, during the campaign in the Philippines. The document was transcribed by Major Dana Wright of St. John, North Dakota.

The diary describes Kinne's entrance into Company B, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry. Kinne was a student at Fargo College, when he heeded the Governor’s call for volunteers. Kinne detailed the trip the volunteers traveled and the delays and encounters they met along the way to “'Frisco”. The troops camped at 'Frisco until orders were sent out to station among the Philippine Islands.

The present work is intended as a survey of events and conditions in Tennessee during the decade from 1860 to 1870 when the entire nation was torn by sectional strife, racial antagonism, and economic and social disorder. The writer can make no pretension of having made a comprehensive or exhaustive study of the sources. That would involve a paper far beyond the scope of the present study. At best I have only scratched the surface; merely opened avenues for future study.
