This collection consists of copies of materials related to Samuel Jordan Cabell found in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. These papers include copies of military bounty land warrants and scrip issued in 1832 as well as a will and some correspondence. Materials created after Cabell’s death are primarily by his son Patrick Henry Cabell. Because these materials are copies, legibility can be limited.

The subject of this work is the strategic problems faced by the United States Navy in the Western Pacific following the acquisition of the Philippine Islands as a result of the Spanish-American War. Using primary materials from the National Archives, Naval War College, and Library of Congress Manuscript Division, some of which have only recently been declassified, the rarely publicized 'Works of the United States Navy in regards to strategic planning and national interests are detailed. Secondary accounts, along with contemporary periodical literature, supplement the previously classified documents.

In the centuries preceding the American Civil War, the large wooden sailing ship was the mainstay of the world's navies. Then, in the spring of 1861, Stephen Mallory, Secretary of the Navy of the Confederate States of America, issued a challenge to the United States Navy: the South was going to fight the numerically superior wooden Navy of the U.S. in ironclad ships. The Union responded to the challenge with its own ironclad, the Monitor, but the South had the advantage of an earlier start.

The role of the Philippine bases in augmenting the Maritime Strategy of the United States Navy's regional mission of deterrence and sea lane protection is being closely scrutinized due to a leadership change in the Philippines and possible military budget cuts at home. This study evaluates the assets of the Subic Bay Naval Station, Cubi Point Naval Air Station, and Clark Air Force Base and the support provided by these bases to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean/Persian Gulf. The Lafayette Flying Corps was the name given to a group of American pilots who flew with the French Air Service during World War 1. More than 200 Americans became expatriates, for a time at least, in order to try to qualify to fly the latest French fighter planes against the Germans. By war's end the 180 who succeeded were serving in 93 French squadrons. Although most later transferred to the U.S. Air Service, it was their days in the Lafayette Flying Corps and its most elite squadron, the Lafayette Escadrille which recalled the fondest memories among survivors. In the years since the end of the Second World War, no aspect of merchant shipping has created greater controversy than the phenomenal growth of the merchant fleet of the Soviet Union. Starting in 1945 with a makeshift fleet that was a motley collection of obsolete vessels, ships received as reparations from the defeated Axis nations and Lend-Lease Liberty ships, the Soviets have fashioned a modern, efficient merchant marine that is currently second in the world in numbers of ships and sixth in deadweight tonnage. Last year General William Westmoreland told a Boston College audience that politicians caused America's defeat in Vietnam. Westmoreland’s charge reflects recent Vietnam War revisionism, the effort to rationalize America’s defeat by claiming that United States forces were prevented from winning. Besides the politicians, who reduced military spending, the revisionists’ cast of villains includes the media and antiwar dissenters, who turned the nation against the war, and various Presidents, who restricted military operations. If polls are to be believed, these interpretations are widely held by Americans, especially Vietnam veterans.

This thesis presents an intensive study of the nature and scope of the Selective Service System in an effort to analyze the system that became the focal point of growing discontent with the Vietnam War. The primary objective is to determine whether the Selective Service System equitably executed its congressionally mandated objective of raising military manpower. In order to ascertain whether the System operated with balance and fairness, its structure and procedures are examined. General John Henry Winder enforced martial law in the Confederate capital in Richmond from the winter of 1862 .to the spring of 1864. Winder's Richmond was plagued with lawlessness, disloyalty, and espionage. He was an experienced and capable commander who enforced his summary orders diligently. But Winder's regime only succeeded in managing the city for brief periods. The complex problems he confronted probably were insurmountable; by the end of his administration Richmond remained in turmoil. Several factors were responsible for this: numerous people were willing to risk prison to participate in the lucrative liquor trade, the basis for much of …

This is a study of the Confederacy's attempt to supply all types of leather products necessary to equip and maintain adequately its armies during the Civil War. This study includes all phases of leather supply efforts made at home and abroad by civilians, the Army, state and political leaders, and slaves. This research gives insight on the importance of a very basic item of supply that is often overlooked by historians as a significant factor in the Civil War. The narrative examines the fort’s physical development—particularly the major reconstruction under Colonel William Wainwright after the Civil War—its architecture (including the post hospital, Officers’ Row, and parade ground), and the daily rhythms of military life. It highlights recreational activities such as polo matches, horse shows, parades, and band concerts, as well as the close relationship between the garrison and the Brownsville community. A notable episode is Dr. William Gorgas’s pioneering yellow fever research at the post hospital in the early 1880s, which identified the mosquito vector and contributed to major advances in tropical medicine.

The Fleet Landing Exercises conducted by the United States Marine Corps in conjunction with the Navy and Army were some of the most significant military exercises conducted in American history. This thesis analyzes the seven exercises conducted between 1935 and 1941 to see how field testing affected amphibious doctrine, organization, and equipment development. This study summarizes the successes and failures of each exercise in regard to the evolution of a strong tactical doctrine, the training of a cadre of officers and men, and the development of the equipment vital to perform the amphibious mission. It questions the role Bigelow played in the formation of army professionalism, a sense of corporate responsibility to exercise military expertise correctly.
