The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. John Roger Stemen was interviewed on June 26, 2001 by Michael J. Birkner about his experiences before he became a professor of History at Gettysburg College. He discusses his childhood in Indiana and focuses on his undergraduate education at Yale University and his service in the photolithography unit in Korea. After the war he attended Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University, where he obtained his doctorate.

George DeWitt Harris was injured in World War I and died at Epionville, France on 7 October 1918.

On Monday night 12 September 1994 President Francois Mitterrand appeared on French national television to discuss his involvement with the Vichy regime during its early years and in particular his postwar friendship with the former Vichy regime’s Police Chief, Rene Bousquet. Rene Bousquet was charged with crimes against humanity in 1989 for his role in the Final Solution in France and was indicted in 1991. He was assassinated 8 June 1993 and never brought to trial. Mitterrand’s controversial friendships and his television appearance to discuss them are emblematic of ambiguities present in French society surrounding historical memory of the period …

Advertising has existed in various forms for centuries. Although it has become almost a science today, marketing to consumers through the use of advertisements has ancient origins. Initially, advertising appeared in vocal form, with town criers and barkers, to a few printed signs, which were dated as far back as the Roman Empire’s advertisements for gladiator events. Historians believe that the first English language advertisement was a handbill created by William Claxton in 1478, for one of the books he printed. These handbills became increasingly sophisticated over time and essentially formed the basis of modem print advertising. Their value in …

Oregon Soldiers And The Portland Press In The Philippine Wars Of 1898 And 1899 : How Oregonians Defined The Race Of Filipinos And The Mission Of America, Sean F. Mcenroe

Dissertations and Theses

Oregon volunteer soldiers fought two wars in the Philippines from 1898 to 1899, one against the Spanish colonial government (from May to August 1898), and one against the Philippine insurgency (beginning in February of 1899). This thesis examines the connections between Oregonians' racial characterization of Filipinos and their beliefs about the wars' purposes and moral characteristics. The source material is drawn from the personal papers of Oregon volunteer soldiers and from the Portland Oregonian.

This thesis analyses the contributions of operational research to the work of the Royal Canadian Air Force Eastern Air Command during the Second World War. The efforts of the handful of Canadian operational researchers in the Allied campaign against the German U-boat force, although having produced only modest results, did make a small but important contribution to the war which have been neglected by historians. The use of aircraft against submarines began during the First World War when both technologies were still in their infancy. Although initial results were poor, the handful of sinkings by aircraft demonstrated its potential as …

After years of applied research on issues pertaining to the veteran community, it has become abundantly clear to this researcher that the good people who serve in our federal and state agencies, and as staff persons in various congressional and state legislative offices often lack the data and/or information they need to fully and meaningfully address the needs of veterans and their families. In the early 1940s, prior to the United States' entry into World War II, through the joint efforts of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, British soldiers were sent to the United States for flight training. This collection gives first-person accounts of the men who learned the art of flying in a place far from their homeland, Florida. The stories provide a wonderful contrast between the two cultures and are told in the voices of British cadets, American cadets who trained with them, instructors, and other individuals who welcomed the British cadets into their homes and lives.
