Leo Schelbert, Einführung in die Schweizerische Auswanderungsgeschichte der Neuzeit. Zurich: Verlag Leemann, 1976. 443 pp. S. Fr. 50. Printed as Beiheft 16 of the Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte.

Leo Schelbert's "Introduction to the history of the Swiss emigration in modern times" is a massive work of more than 400 pages of relatively small print. The work is divided into four parts, titled "Theoretical Foundation," "Historical Survey," Selected Documents," and "Historiographical Introduction." Each of the four parts is almost self contained and covers the subject of Swiss emigration from a different angle. As a consequence there are certain repetitions and overlappings. …

Pierre-Frederic Droz: The 'American': The Story Of An Itinerant Watchmaker, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Most immigrants, especially those who came to stay in a certain country for only a short while, belonged to the "inarticulate," that is to those whose experiences, joys and trials went largely unrecorded. A few of them, however, did leave rich and vivid accounts of their journeys and adventures. To them belongs Pierre-Frederic Droz, known to his countrymen as the "American" who remained for a good part of his life a man on the move.

In Their Hearts Forever: The Dynamics Of Stalinism, James Seymour Wilson Feb 1977

In Their Hearts Forever: The Dynamics Of Stalinism, James Seymour Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a general examination of the Soviet and East European crisis which followed the death of Joseph Stalin in March, 1953. Stalin's character, position, and power were such that the methods he employed in the government of the vast multi-national and multi-state empire bequeathed to his successors could not be made to function in his absence without reform and redefinition. The post-Stalin leadership realized that in order to consolidate its position at the head of the empire a careful program of "de-Stalinization" was mandatory. The prosecution of that program from the announcement of collective leadership in April, 1953, …

Focus On German-Speaking Countries/German Cultural Readers, Wolfgang Schlauch, Barbara Schlauch

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

In 1945, Hitler's Third Reich, which had brought misery and suffering to millions of Europeans, was in shambles. German cities had been reduced to rubble, and her people were frightened, starving and desperate. Americans, together with their allies, occupied the defeated country. Wishing to prevent a recurrence of German aggressiveness, the Allies planned to punish the guilty and prevent Germany from ever becoming a military power again.

Who would have thought at the time of the Nuremberg Trials that only thirty years later the western part of Germany would be one of the closest political and military allies and one …

Partisans, Godmothers, Bicyclists, And Other Terrorists: Women In The French Resistance And Under Vichy, Rayna Kline

Dissertations and Theses

During the years 1940-1944, the period of the German Occupation, French women played an active role in the political sphere as part of the organized Resistance movements. The women who participated were not isolated examples, but an extremely diverse group that cut across social milieux, political alignments and religious persuasions. The range of their activity in the spectrum of roles and the differences in their style challenge the stereotypes and persistent attitudes in French culture about women’s nature.

Women were leaders in the principal Resistance movements, participated in the organization and dissemination of the underground press and in the organization …

Mission Of Mercy: The U.S. Military Mission In Berlin, 1919, Thomas R. Magnuson Jan 1977

Mission Of Mercy: The U.S. Military Mission In Berlin, 1919, Thomas R. Magnuson

Master's Theses

My topic for this thesis, the U. S. Military Mission in Berlin in 1919, was the organization responsible for tending to allied prisoners imprisoned in Germany after the First World War. Most of these prisoners were Russians cut off from their homes by the Russian Revolution and the allied strategy for containing the Soviet threat. At no time did the Mission's staff number over 1,000, but this small organization worked wonders in sustaining and repatriating thousands of non-American prisoners. The scope of the Mission's work created numerous problems in organization and presentation.

There were two organizations involved with the U. …

Four Centuries Of Holinshed's Chronicles (1577-1977), Vernon F. Snow

The Courier

The composite nature of the Holinshed's Chronicles is manifest in the first volume. It contains William Harrison's description of England followed by Holinshed's history of England prior to the Norman Conquest; then Harrison's description of Scotland; and then Richard Stanyhurst's description of Ireland, Holinshed's history of Ireland down to 1509, and finally Stanyhurst's continuation from 1509 to 1547. The work includes dedicatory epistles addressed to Lord Brooke, the Earl of Leicester, and Sir Henry Sidney, penned by Harrison, Holinshed, and Stanyhurst, respectively. The second volume encompassing the history of England from 1066 to the reign of Elizabeth—a narrative history patterned …

Kaspar Schnetzler: Der Fall Bruder. Neues Aus New Hampshire: Book Review, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In his first novel the young Swiss author Kaspar Schnetzler demonstrates a quite remarkable talent. Choosing the framework of a detective story--the search for a disappeared student named Gordon Schuster--Schnetzler ably leads the reader into the dark and complex area of Germany's Nazi past, her "unbewaltigte Vergangenheit." As a matter of fact, his story illustrates how hard, even impossible it is for some Germans to cope with their experiences of the Third Reich.

"C'e piu distanza effettiva tra l'infanzia e la vechiaia di mia madre che tra lei bambina e gli uomini delle caverne" (There is more real distance between the childhood and the old age of my mother than between her as a little girl and man in the stone age), the author exclaims, as he observes from the new power dam, which has been constructed in his native Verzasca valley in the canton of Ticino, how a great part of the rural world of his ancestors is being submerged for ever. In such surroundings his mother had not been allowed by …

The American Revolution: A Lesson In Dissent. The Case Of John Joachim Zubly, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

On September 3, 1775, John Joachim Zubly, pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Georgia, and at that date a delegate of that province to the Second Continental Congress of the Thirteen Colonies assembled in Philadelphia, put the final touch to a manuscript which soon thereafter went to press . It was entitled The Law of Liberty. A Sermon on American Affairs Preached at the Opening of the Provincial Congress of Georgia. The manifesto consisted of three parts: The first was an introductory address "To the Right Honourable William Henry, Earl of Dartmouth" (3/III),** which presented an incisive view …

Banziger, Hans, Zwischen Protest Und Traditionsbewusstsein: Arbeiten Zum Werk Und Zur Gesellschaftlichen Stellun Max Frischs: Book Review, John Holley

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Lest the reader be frightened away by the author's promise to recount in the service of information those minor details which seldom find a place in "broad attempts at interpretation," it should be mentioned at the outset that this book has more to recommend it than such a pedantic statement of intent might lead one to believe. Indeed, Hans Banziger, appropriately for a peripatetic review of Frisch's work, takes us through a knowledgeable discussion of the major tenets that have long informed the thinking and writing of this most interesting, engaging, and thought provoking contemporary, reminding us of Frisch's abiding …

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter Jul 1976

Samuel Butler’S Way Of All Flesh As A Sociological Novel, David Carter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To scholars of Victorian literature, Samuel Butler has always been a rebel who strikes out at society with wide-ranging criticism. After years of studying subjects as varied as music, art, biology, literature, and theology, Butler felt (like many Victorian writers) that he could make valuable social comments with his satires, travelogues, biological studies and one novel.

Critical studies of Butler have tended to treat in broad outline all facets of his life and work. This study, however, examines in depth Butler’s novel The Way of All Flesh, as the focal point of his critical analysis of Victorian society. It treats …

The United States Great Britain And The Status Of Thailand (Siam), 1940-1946, Peter Goodwin Jul 1976

The United States Great Britain And The Status Of Thailand (Siam), 1940-1946, Peter Goodwin

History Theses & Dissertations

This paper traces the changes in the attitudes and policies of the United States towards the Southeast Asian country of Thailand during the Second World War. From a position of indifference the United States assumed an active role in the emergence of Thailand as a sovereign nation at the conclusion of the war, encouraging pro-American factions and opposing a traditional power of the area, Great Britain.

The emphasis of the paper is on the different attitudes held by Britain and the United States and the efforts to reconcile them. The British expected recompense by the Thais for allying themselves with …

Revolutions: A Comparative Study, Thomas E. Gill

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and then to compare common descriptive characteristics (uniformities) evident within three historical events: the Paris Commune of 1871, the Zapatista Movement of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1919, and the Spartacist Rebellion of 1919. One such uniformity is the fact that all three are abortive social revolutions.

The Swiss In Hawaii, Niklaus R. Schweizer

SWITZERLAND AND HAWAII, at first glance, seem to have little to do with each other and any connection appears coincidental. A high government official in Honolulu recently was of that opinion and many would have readily corroborated his notions.
