The past year has been a very busy and fruitful one for the Swiss American Historical Society (SAHS), with many developments and achievements. We formed new partnerships, engaged in outreach, published a book, began our centennial plans, and gained 35 new members (many of whom are not Swiss)!

2025 began with us awarding a grant to Celeste Onchuck, an SAHS member and doctoral student who is writing her dissertation about Huldrych Zwingli and her ancestors, the Gallmann family who immigrated to South Carolina (her article exploring some of this is in this issue). Thomas Quinn Marabello became President of the Swiss American Historical Society in November 2024. As president, he is focused on increasing membership, organizing engaging and interesting annual meetings, and supporting young historians.

Beth Zurbuchen has been Vice President of the Swiss American Historical Society since November 2024. She served as President of the Swiss Center of North America in New Glarus, Wisconsin from 2009 until retiring in April 2024.

Barbara Müller joined the SAHS in 2013, became Vice President of the SAHS Swiss Chapter in 2016 and is President of our sister organization, Friends of the Swiss American Historical Society …

The Centennial Committee of the Swiss American Historical Society is organizing to plan and consider ideas for celebrating our milestone 100th anniversary which will occur in the year 2027. In addition to a trip to Switzerland and holding our annual meeting in Chicago where the Society was founded, we also are interested in potentially doing an exhibit at the Embassy of Switzerland and/or the Swiss Center of North America, doing an oral history project, finding donors to contribute to the Leo Schelbert Award, creating merchandise, potentially creating a video, and publishing a commemorative book on the history of the Society. …

A dear friend and strong supporter of the Swiss American Historical Society, Dietmar Kuegler, died on December 3, 2022, in the village of Övenum on the island of Föhr, Germany, where he had lived for several years. For many years, he translated and published my articles from the Swiss American Historical Society Review dealing with the Swiss in the American West in his Magazin für Amerikanistik in Germany. After Ochs had offered his services in the exportation of Mennonites from Bern, his documentary biography becomes quiet for some time, some ten years. No document is known that shows Bern 's acceptance of his offer of assistance, none even verifying his ex istence. We know through Graffenried's accounts,1 that the landgrave's Carolina endeavor ended in di saster and in the death of surveyor Lawson in September 1711.2 The name Ochs could not be found in any of the decade's consulted sources in Bern with the exception of bapti smal records that name the children born to the Ochs couple.

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion

People do not generally associate the sixteenth century in Europe with religious tolerance and such an attitude is understandable, but it overlooks the small but relatively tolerant country of Switzerland. Elsewhere in Europe there was then, in fact, a great deal of religious intolerance and persecution. A few examples will illustrate very nicely how intolerant other European countries were at that time toward other religions.

At the time of the Reformation, Valais was under the jurisdiction of France, Savoy and Spanish Milan. In the last decade of the 16th century and then more intensely in the 17th century, it became a theater for the dynamics of this power. Valais stood in a close relationship with their Savoyard neighbors that had evolved from a relationship of competition into a more friendly union by the 16th Century. The first accord came in 1528 when the Duke of Savoy withdrew from the district of Saint-Maurice, (conquered in 1475). In 1536 Valais engaged with Bern in a concentrated battle …

The theme of this issue of the Review is the 19th Century SAHS emigration from Canton Valais of Switzerland to the United States. All the materials in the issue were written by Valaisans or by American descendants of Valaisan immigrants. My own article, "Nineteenth Century Swiss Valaisan Immigration to the United States," developed from · a desire to understand the experience of my great-great grandparents who left the canton in 1854. Their final destination, according to the ship's manifest, was Mishicot, Wisconsin.
