The Township Act and Saxe Gotha The year was 1716 and a lone outpost, the Congaree garrison, located about five miles below the mouth of the Saluda River and below the Congaree Creek on the western bank of the Congaree River offered little protection for low country settlements from Indians resisting the take-over of their homelands. By 1722 the garrison was abandoned.

A visitor from Basel remarked that New Glarus seemed "more Swiss than Switzerland." Steven D. Hoelscher argues that the community invented "ethnic place" by its continual reinterpretation of ethnicity and by its reshaping of "Swissness" over time through its landscapes, museums, festivals, and cultural performances. A remarkable volume was recently issued that is very helpful for gaining insight into the history and significance of the old families that have their origins in, and still inhabit, that area of the Canton Bern, Switzerland, that is drained by the Emme river and called the Emmental. Most of these family names are recognizable by Americans as many of their families stem from this exquisitely beautiful, but traditionally economically poor region which has contributed heavily to American immigration in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Following an informal gathering over coffee and rolls, President Erdmann Schmocker called the business meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Franz J. Portmann, the Honorary Swiss Consul for Philadelphia, greeted the forty-some members and guests present and invited them to a wine and cheese reception at the Pentimenti Gallery following the afternoon program. Ms. Hannah Widrig, Cultural Attachee at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, DC, was introduced. President Schmocker thanked Mr. and Mrs. Portmann for their help with the meeting arrangements.

This year the Swiss members of the SAHS held their traditional meeting on Saturday, October 9, 1999 in St. Gallen's Washington House. Despite the first signs of winter - windy conditions and low temperatures characteristic for the region at this time - Dr. Marcel Mayer of the City Archive of St. Gallen first took some thirty guests on a tour of St. Gallen's merchant houses typical of the City's 19th and 20th centuries' textile industry. Henri IV won the throne of France as a feat of arms in a time of great social, religious, economic and military transformation. Militarily, Henri has generally been regarded as a gallant, opportunistic and lucky cavalry commander whose remarkable sense of timing and flexible personal principles enabled him to play a major role in the ending of the Wars of Religion in France. Current debate over the "Military Revolution" of the sixteenth century and the "Revolution in Military Affairs" of the twentieth has renewed interest in both the characters and the techniques of warfare in transformation.

One who travels from here over the gently descending Western slope of the mountain range to the California capital Sacramento or further to San Francisco, will choose US highway 50. After a few dozen kilometers drive through mountainous forested areas which have a few small settlements the traveler will come upon a group of buildings which obviously stem from stage coach times.

Halbrook's 1998 book, Target Switzerland: Swiss Armed Neutrality in World War II is a well-narrated account of the Swiss preparedness to resist any possible invasion by a hostile power, but most especially by the Nazis, through the critical years of the 1930s and 1940s. The author brings to bear his considerable skills of persuasion and journalistic perception, reminiscent of the late William Shirer, of whose work he makes extensive use for historical perspective. No study has yet examined the role of elite women in the Wars of the Roses. However, an explanation of their motivations and actions is crucial to understanding these conflicts.

Aristocratic women exercised considerable power under the system of "bastard feudalism." Women built and maintained affinities, acquired and defended land, used and manipulated the law, and influenced local politics. They had acknowledged roles as peacemakers and knew how to defend a castle. During the Wars of the Roses women would make use of all of these tools.

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses.
